CommandBox versions are on ForgeBox

Adobe has released security updates for ColdFusion versions 2016 and 2018. These updates resolve multiple important vulnerabilities that could lead to privilege escalation.

Vulnerability Details: DLL search-order hijacking - Privilege escalation

Note: Adobe recommends updating your ColdFusion JDK/JRE to the latest version of the LTS releases for 1.8 and JDK 11. Applying the ColdFusion update without a corresponding JDK update will NOT secure the server.  See the relevant Tech Notes for more details.
Adobe  also recommends customers apply the security configuration settings as outlined on the ColdFusion Security page as well as review the respective Lockdown guides.  ( linked in the security bulletin )

CFCasts tech stack revealed

CFCasts launched at the beginning of this month on the tails of Into the Box 2020. We wanted a way to share all of the great content from Into the Box with those that attended with a great experience that matched the content. Additionally, we wanted to offer our training and experience to the CFML community going forward. Over the past month, we've added over 10 hours of free videos to CFCasts. Blog - Ben Nadel - Scope Traversal Behavior With Undefined Function Arguments In Lucee CFML 5.3.6.61
Just now, as I was looking at iterating over Structs using CFLoop in Lucee CFML, I ran into a fun little behavior of the ColdFusion language: Scope traversal will skip-over undefined function arguments and access like-named values in higher-up scopes. At first, this feels like a bug. But, I think it ends-up being consistent with how ColdFusion has always handled scope traversal. That said, as a mental refresher, I thought it would be worth exploring this use-case in Lucee CFML 5.3.6.61.

Blog - Ben Nadel - Struct Iteration With CFLoop Exposes Both Key And Value In Lucee CFML 5.3.6.61
Back in February, when I was having lunch with Gert Franz, co-creator of Lucee CFML, we were commiserating on how amazing ColdFusion is. At that lunch, Gert told me about some of the great things that Lucee CFML offers, like its seamless support for ColdFusion Tags in CFScript. Another minor feature that he mentioned was that the CFLoop tag exposes both Key and Value attribute that remove the need to look-up the value within the CFLoop body. Now, months later, I finally used this feature for the first time in yesterday's post on proxying Amazon S3 uploads using CFHTTP and Lucee CFML. Given the fact that Adobe ColdFusion doesn't support this feature, I thought it might be worth exploring in Lucee CFML 5.3.6.61 in case new Lucee-converts didn't realize it was there (just as I didn't).

At InVision, a couple of the engineers on my team are building a new feature that will entail a "membership" pattern of data organization. Meaning, there will be "containers"; and then, "items" within those "containers". Yesterday, we began to noodle on the index design of those database tables; and, while I discussed this type of relationship in my Not-So-Dark Art of Designing Database Indexes article, I did leave the low-level details a bit hand-wavy. As such, I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at how a "membership" style table can be indexed; and, what the EXPLAIN output of the table is along the way in MySQL 5.6.37.

We have pushed a patch release of CommandBox 5.1.1 which is a small addition to the recent 5.1.0 release.  This release was primarily to address a regression in 5.1.0 affecting Mac OS users who tried to start Lucee servers.  If you see an error similar to this on a Lucee server and you're running a Mac and CommandBox 5.1.0, then this release will fix it for you.

Blog - Ben Nadel - The mid() Function Can Safely Go Out-Of-Bounds And Gather Zero Characters In Lucee CFML 5.3.4.77
I'm almost certain that the mid() function in ColdFusion - think the .slice() function in JavaScript - has historically been quite touchy regarding out-of-bounds references and zero-length extractions. At some points, however, this must have changed. I don't know when it changed; but, I accidentally discovered this nicety the other day when I was attempting to canonicalize a URL by its individual components in Lucee CFML. In an attempt to bring my mental model for the mid() function into the modern era, I wanted to quickly demonstrate its lenient behavior in Lucee CFML 5.3.4.77.

My initial thought was an inefficient query or poorly implemented logic was to blame. Blog - Matthew Clemente - CFHTTP and SSL issues with CommandBox 5
We recently ran into a puzzling issue with cfhttp and CommandBox 5. Requests to certain domains, such as trycf.com, would fail with Unknown host: Received fatal alert: handshake_failure, despite the domain’s SSL certificate being valid. Apparently, as of Update 5, there is now a ColdFusion 2018 Application setting - useJavaAsRegexEngine - that tells the CFML runtime to use Java's Regular Expression engine when executing built-in functions like reFind(), reMatch(), and reReplace(). While the default POSIX pattern matching engine is pretty great, it's less robust and less powerful than the Java pattern matching engine. As such, this will be a much welcome change to the Adobe ColdFusion community.

Blog - Ben Nadel - The canonicalize() Function Will Decode Strings That "Loosely Match" HTML Entities In Lucee CFML 5.3.5.92
Yesterday, I started running into an interesting issue when using the canonicalize() function in Lucee CFML to normalize the encoding of a given URL. The result of the canonicalize() call was leaving some URL search-parameters intact while corrupting others. At first, it seemed completely random. But, after digging into it for a bit, I realized that the canonicalize() call was decoding substrings within the URL that looked like HTML entities. To demonstrate, I was able to isolate the issue in Lucee CFML 5.3.5.92.

Into the Box last week

It was a big success. Most people seemed to like the Sococo virtual conference setup, although they could change some of the notification defaults.
The Keynotes streamed live, without hiccups, except we always go overtime. We split the keynote into 2 days, and we still couldn’t keep it under the hour.

Relax v4.1.0 Released

We are so excited to bring you the release of Relax v4.1.0. Though the release version is minor, this version contains a number of enhancements to OpenAPI v3 support, including better formatting and display of the new-to-3.0 requestBody schema and properties. In addition the user experience has been greatly improved as the UI has been rewritten in VueJS and is now optimized for displaying large API documents with hundreds of routes and thousands of methods.
