Conversely, Mr. DeViney's centrist, Nixon-Rockefeller Republican fabric (social liberalism, fiscal conservatism plus "law & order" threads) serve to answer his counterpart's modern liberal idealism with an injection of stark, long-term pragmatism to temper any shared dreams of grandeur.
