Imagine being unable to speak your native language, and that your choice is between using whatever language you were taught as a kid or to use English, if you want to be heard. Welcome to my world! Fluent in three languages but unable to communicate with my illiterate grandmother, who only spoke Sardinian, I found myself mourning the loss of culture and familial connection this bizarre situation brought.

"In Italy we devote three years to the study of Dante’s Holy Comedy, but despite of analysis and exegesis, no one remembers Purgatory and Heaven, we all remember Hell.

"Among the many characters encountered in Hell, Odysseus is one of those that I’ve always loved because I very much identified with his spirit of rebellion against rules and his passion for discovery. Reading the story of Odysseus today, I still love it, but I cannot avoid thinking that behind every hero there is a multitude of enablers, people who must take care of the dirty, hidden, unsatisfactory and unheroic daily tasks, so that the destined hero can take his masculine place among the other masculine heroes.

"So I decided to tell the heroic story through the eyes of one of those enabler, making her a woman in love who doesn’t regret having followed her hero to Hell, at the cost of hiding her true self, because her love for Odysseus is second only to her love for discovery and adventure.

"Technically, I have tried to avoid screams and other sounds typically associated with Hell, rather preferring the dissonance of an unruly cacophony."

Using podcasts to document a project that blends print, artefacts, and technology. That is: Maria Cristina Marras (podcaster) creates a podcast for the artistic residency of Cristina Marras (Director of Research at CNR) at Fablab in Assemini (Ca). In creating this podcast, I tried to reflect on the form, the overlapping of languages, styles, expectations, materials and approaches to research and the work of art, with all the uncertainties and experiments that occurred in real life.

This podcast is the result of the material collected by Cristina Marras (my namesake, my friend and Director of Research at CNR) during her artistic residency "Andata e Ritorno (a/r): dalle parole alla materia [Return: from words to substance]", (selected in the ManiLab Artistic Residences competition 4.0 2019), an artistic design laboratory between innovation and ancient knowledge, which took place at the Fablab Cagliari in Assemini (18 September - 3 October 2019).

I quote from the article published in the volume Migrations of Technologies [the entire article in the link below] "The design idea was born around an experiment: starting from the modelling of a text, specifically the 1549 Sardiniae brevis historia et descriptio by Sigismondo Arquer (published in 1550), to obtain an artefact that integrated artisan techniques with 3d technology (modelling and printing) [...] The call asked for new projects and the experimentation of innovative creative processes through the use of both digital manufacturing machines and traditional tools. "

Usare il podcast per documentare un progetto che fonde carta stampata, manufatti e tecnologia. Ovvero: Maria Cristina Marras (podcaster) crea un podcast per la residenza artistica di Cristina Marras (direttrice della ricerca al CNR) al Fablab di Assemini (Ca). Nella creazione di questo podcast ho cercato di riflettere nella forma, la sovrapposizione di linguaggi, stili, aspettative, materiali e approcci alla ricerca e all'opera d'arte, con tutte le incertezze e le sperimentazioni verificatesi nella vita reale.

Questo podcast è il risultato del materiale raccolto da Cristina Marras (mia omonima, mia amica e Direttrice della Ricerca al CNR) durante la sua residenza artistica Andata e Ritorno (a/r): dalle parole alla materia, (selezionato al concorso Residenze Artistiche ManiLab 4.0 2019), un laboratorio di progettazione artistica tra innovazione e antichi saperi, che si è svolto presso il Fablab Cagliari di Assemini (18 settembre - 3 ottobre 2019).

Cito dall'articolo pubblicato nel volume Migrazioni di Tecnologie [l'intero articolo nel link in basso] "L’idea progettuale è nata intorno a un esperimento: partire dalla modellizzazione di un testo, nello specifico il Sardiniae brevis historia et descriptio di Sigismondo Arquer del 1549 (pubblicato nel 1550), per giungere a realizzare un manufatto che integrasse le tecniche ar-tigianali con la tecnologia 3d (modellizzazione e stampa) [...] Il bando chiamava infatti a nuove progettualità e alla sperimentazione di processi ideativi e realizzativi inediti attraverso l’utilizzo sia di macchine di fabbricazione digitale sia di strumenti tradizionali."
