Stories of women at work are laced all throughout the Bible and show us that God is not interested only in those magical-to-me women who seem to waltz through their days with peace and slowness, the Marys, who can easily ignore the siren song of their day planners. He loves us doers, us Marthas, too.

Elizabeth Berget
Elizabeth is a wife, mama to three, homeschooler, photographer, and writer who has always done her best thinking while writing—from her angsty teenage journal entries until now. She’s lived in Africa and Asia but is really just a country mouse with a Minneapolis zip code. She strongly believes in the restorative power of Jesus and a home-cooked meal, or even just a really good cheese, and writes mostly about how the image of God is uniquely understood and displayed in motherhood. You can find more of her words on her website, or on Instagram.
When we finished our favorite children's Bible for the second time, I asked my husband, "What do you think? Can they handle the real Bible?"
Tattered pages and missing covers told the story of our special relationship with storybook Bibles. But after reading numerous versions, some multiple times, I wondered: were my children ready for the real Bible? Would they sit still without pictures—or make it through the loooong genealogies? And what about those David and Bathsheba types-of-details often left out of storybook versions?
That was three years ago. Today, we've read the New Testament as a family. We made it through the lists of names in Ezra and Nehemiah and rediscovered oft-forgotten details in Esther, Daniel, Ruth, and Jonah. If you question whether your family can handle the real Bible, here are three discoveries we made—and a few lessons learned along the way.

It’s hard to have consistent morning quiet times when your alarm clock is a baby who needs to be fed, and your snooze is set to his eighteen-month-old brother who needs breakfast and a diaper change. When I held the title of “mom of two-under-two”, my mornings seemed to begin before I was awake, and barely paused until the blessed hour of overlapping naps in the afternoon. While I had developed a habit over the years of beginning my days in prayer and Bible reading, life with young children threw me for a loop. Predictability had gone out the window and taken my spiritual disciplines with it...

Amy Fischer is a home educating mom of three rambunctious boys. Originally from Indiana, she now resides with her family in northwest England. Amy writes about home education and parenting on her blog, Around the Thicket. She is also the co-host of the Thinking Love podcast, a show about the Charlotte Mason approach to education. When she isn’t chasing after her boys, you will find her reading, writing, or planning her next hike.
With inductive Bible study, we begin by making specific observations about a book or passage of the Bible (the specific examples). Then, we consult other tools to develop our understanding. As the last step, we consider the application we can make from what that part of the Bible says (the broad generalizations). I like to think of it as a “listen first, listen long” approach because our own response to the passage is the last and final step. Application comes after we have paid close attention to what God says in His word and discerned its meaning to the best of our ability.

Guard your Bible reading and studying time as the most important thing on your to-do list each day. It doesn’t have to look the way you think. It may be at a different time each day. It may be short. You may have to listen to the Bible on audio. But it can still be impactful. God’s Word has the power to change us when we take it in and let it impact our hearts and minds. And that’s the whole point.

Motherhood is hard. Another inspirational quote just won’t cut it on my tough days. What I need is a right understanding of God and His Word. In difficult moments, Scripture brings the calm my soul needs. Meditating on God’s Word daily equips us with the Truth we need in discouraging moments. It also equips us to provide that sound encouragement for another momma who may desperately need it.

How do we know God will change us, though? How do we know He will help us achieve the dreams simmering in our hearts, or defeat the sins weighing down our soul, or even make it through another day of mundane motherhood?
We can be confident that God will grow, sanctify, and accomplish His will in and for our lives because He who began the work of salvation in you "will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Phillippians 1:6).

A recovering perfectionist, she writes about resting in God’s grace in the everyday moments of life as a woman, wife, and mother. She is on the blog contributor team at The Joyful Life and has featured articles at Risen Motherhood, Coffee + Crumbs, and Kindred Mom. You can find her words on her personal blog (dwellingword.com) and on Instagram (@bethanygbroderick).
"I don’t care what anybody tells you, motherhood is the most wonderful, scary, and difficult role on the planet. We need God’s peace and promises to live out our faith and to parent well. But we can’t pour into everyone else unless we first sit at His feet and get filled.
As a young momma, you may be wondering how to find the time to study God’s Word. Your world revolves around breasts or bottles, diapers and dinners, and laundry. (How do such small people go through so many articles of clothing?) You barely have time to pee, much less sip coffee and study the Bible for an hour."
