  • COVID in America is Like Another 9/11 Every Other Day
As the MOMocrats watched today's solemn comemmorations of the terrible events that occurred 19 years ago, they noted that Donald Trump has caused approximately 66 9/11’s this year, and we lose another 1,000 people every single day.
This week, we learned that Trump's mishandling of the virus was not due to a misunderstanding of its lethality: Back in February, he told journalist Bob Woodward that the novel coronavirus was airborne, very easy to contract, and deadlier than the flu. Several weeks later, he confessed to Woodward that he deliberately played down the dangers of the virus because he didn't want to cause "panic." (Since his re-election campaign is ONLY about panicking white folks, one would have to conclude that the thing he doesn't want to panic is the stock market.
    And Lordy, there are tapes.
Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills will talk about this and more on this week's MOMocrats MOMochat, part of the DemCast family of podcasts.

  • It's Labor Day. Will We See Another Spike?
The MOMocrats can't believe summer is over and we STILL need to stay socially distant. Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills talk about the Biden campaign's strong offense this week, much ado about a visit to a hair salon... and the bombshell report that Donald Trump thinks our fallen soldiers are "losers."

  • 67 Days to Go
The Republicans had their turn to put on a convention this week... and it wasn't good.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills talk about how Donald Trump's plans for a grand coronation got repeatedly botched by the coronavirus, violations of the Hatch Act...and the backdrop of Jacob Blake's shooting and the violence in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Also: Kamala Harris comes out swinging as the Biden campaign gears up for battle.
Early voting in some states begins in a little over three weeks.

  • Conventional Wisdom: Recapping the DNC
The leadership of the Democratic National Committee took the COVID-19 pandemic seriously and made the decision months ago to forego the traditional mass gathering which was to take place in Milwaukee this year. Pundits feared that the proceedings would end up with all the charm of one massive Zoom teleconference.
The pundits were charmingly proven wrong. The convention planning team - led by veteran Democratic strategist Stephanie Cutter and Emmy-award winning TV producer Ricky Kirshner (who has been on board since 1992), this year's DNC was a crisp, fast-moving television event... and might we add: entertaining.
"It was GOOD television," says MOMocrat Donna Schwartz Mills, who joins her colleagues Karoli and Aliza Worthington of CrooksandLiars.com to assess the convention, the introduction to the country of the Biden-Harris ticket... and speculate about the Republicans' turn next week.

  • Yo, Semite! We're Going to Thighland
As Donald Trump bumbles through talking points during his daily press briefings and continues to believe the coronavirus will "just go away" - he tries to make the case that JOE BIDEN is too mentally diminished to be president.
You can almost hear MOMocrats Aliza Worthington and Donna Schwartz Mills roll their eyes as they run through this week's political news from a progressive point of view.
The election is less than 90 days away, and mailed ballots will start going out in a matter of weeks. Polling lo oks good for the Democrats, but after 2016, no one is putting stock in polls - especially when the Republicans seem determined to STEAL the election (again). We can't let that happen. The next administration is going to have its work cut out for it, as experts warn that COVID-19 restrictions will be with us for years to come - even if we get an effective vaccine.

  • Republicans in Disarray
The emergency provisions of the CARES Act - giving Americans an extra unemployment benefit $600 per week and a moratorium on evictions - expire next week. The Democrats in the House have passed the HEROES Act back in May, providing six more months of COVID-19 unemployment, housing and food assistance, debt relief, student loan forgiveness, hazard pay, and nearly $1 trillion in aid for state and local governments.
This legislation remains with the pile of House bills gathering dust on Mitch "The Grim Reaper" McConnell's desk.
The GOP has been in negotiations among themselves to come up with a Senate bill that would provide less generous benefits to the American people who are still suffering from the raging pandemic - but they cannot come to consensus (and they have yet to talk to Democratic Senators they need to pass the 60-vote threshhold). Time is of the essence: they are due for yet another five-week recess on July 31. And this week, unemployment claims surged again, as many parts of the country are on the brink of a second closing due to the pandemic.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss this and the crazy quilt of this week's other developments in the weekly podcast from a progressive point of view - part of the DemCast family of podcasts.

  • Back to School
There is one issue on which the MOMocrats agree with Donald Trump: We would ALL like to see our kids go back to school, where they can learn their lessons in a classroom with trained, professional teachers and enjoy socializing with their friends.
But as long as the pandemic surges unchecked - and the government withholds funding that will allow schools to open safely - a majority of parents and teachers alike want everyone to continue to STAY HOME. No amount of presidential bullying can change the trajectory of a virus that does not respect political stance or borders. Not to mention the fact that we still do not understand the long term effects of COVID infection, even after someone has seemingly recovered.

  • What is "Normal"? And Can Joe Biden Restore It?
The Supreme Court this week ruled that Donald Trump is not immune from criminal investigations and Congressional oversight and he went ballistic on Twitter.
And the country gave out a collective yawn. After all, we're the epicenter of death in a global pandemic, unemployment is at Great Depression levels, the racism baked into our nation's civic infrastructure has reached a boiling point, and we have a president who does nothing but make it all worse because all he cares about is getting re-elected (so he can continue to not do anything that benefits the American people).
Three and one-half years ago, when Donald Trump came in to office and began assaulting our people and institutions, we would collectively moan, "This is not normal." But now - we are so far from "normal," who knows what it means any longer?
Joe Biden gave a speech yesterday on the economy. He doesn't have the soaring rhetoric of Barack Obama - but his recognition of the suffering of Americans who are just trying to get through another day was... soothing. And was a reminder of what it felt to have a leader who is "normal."

  • An Independence Day Like No Other
Yesterday, Donald Trump said - once again - that he thinks the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 will just "disappear." Maybe - but not until it has infected every last person in the United States. Because Trump refused to use his presidential powers to impose a nationwide standard for combating the virus, we ended up witih a patchwork of various measures among the states. And because Trump only cares about his reelection, he pushed to open the economy too soon. The result is that the virus is surging: more than 100,000 new infections in the last two days, and many communities have cancelled their July 4 celebrations in an attempt to encourage Americans to STAY AT HOME for the holiday.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss the current virus situation in today's Independence Day edition of the podcast, along with the mind-boggling revelation that this president continues to kowtow to Putin even after being briefed that Russia has been paying the Taliban bounties for killing American soldiers in Afghanistan... the progress of the 2020 campaign... and more. • 20th Century Mixtape
The year is half over, and so far we've had a pandemic, massive recession, and civic unrest - while being led by an erratic, authoritarian liar who is fighting for re-election. Wags on Twitter point out that 2020 is like a 20th century mixtape, with all of the terrible events of the last century occurring at once. The only thing we have not yet endured is a world war, and all we can do is hope that Trump doesn't get us embroiled in something like that - but we have another five months until the election, and Trump is tanking in the polls... so there's time.
MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss a week in politics that began with Bill Barr's botched firing of SDNY's leader and ended with an attempt to dismantle the entire ACA in the middle of a pandemic - after 20 million newly unemployed people have moved onto Obamacare.
