Week 10: Staying F.O.C.U.S.ed—The Hour of P.O.W.E.R.
Why It’s Important to Know Your P.O.W.E.R. | It’s Okay Not to Be Okay—You Don’t Have to Do It Alone | Mental Illness Is Real and There Is Help
Kings and Queens,As we continue on our 52-week journey, Week 10 is a powerful check-in: Are you aware of your P.O.W.E.R.? Do you feel safe to admit if you’re not okay? This week, we embrace the truth—life does get heavy, and sometimes we find ourselves in places where hope feels distant. But you’re not alone, and there’s healing available when you allow yourself to seek it.
Understanding Depression: Facts, Causes & Hope
Depression isn’t just “feeling down.” It’s a common, serious mood disorder that impacts millions and can touch anyone. It can feel like a persistent emptiness, loss of joy, overwhelming fatigue, or even a struggle just to get out of bed.Common symptoms:
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Loss of interest in favorites hobbies
- Noticeable changes in weight or appetite
- Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
- Constant tiredness or loss of energy
- Restlessness or irritability
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Depression is treatable. If symptoms last more than two weeks, it’s time to seek support.
Key Causes and Risks:
- Genetics: Family history of depression increases risk.
- Trauma & Chronic Stress: Unresolved pain, major loss, ongoing hardship.
- Medical Conditions: Illnesses like cancer or Parkinson’s, or medication side effects.
- Major Life Changes: Loss, unemployment, or postpartum changes.
- Chemical Imbalances: Fluctuations in brain chemistry or hormones.
The P.O.W.E.R. Activation: ALLOWING HEALING
This week’s P.O.W.E.R. activation centers on giving yourself permission to heal.
- P — Pray for understanding. Ask God for wisdom and strength to recognize where you need healing.
- O — Own your feelings. It’s okay to acknowledge that you’re not okay—truth is powerful.
- W — Welcome support. Reach out to family, friends, faith leaders, or professionals. You aren’t meant to carry burdens alone.
- E — Encourage others and yourself. Remind yourself daily: healing is possible and help is real.
- R — Release shame. There is no guilt in asking for help—only courage and wisdom.
The F.O.C.U.S. Plan for Tough Moments
- F – Find your safe space. Identify people, places, or practices where you feel secure and heard.
- O – Open up honestly. Share what you’re feeling with someone you trust.
- C – Commit to get support. That first call to a counselor, doctor, or support group can change everything.
- U – Understand you’re not alone. Many have walked this road and come through to the other side.
- S – Speak life over yourself. Practice daily affirmations: “I am worthy of healing. My voice matters. I will see joy again.”
What Does God Say About Depression?
The Bible never condemns those who suffer emotionally. Instead, scripture honors grief and invites us to bring our pain to God.
- David poured out his anguish and loneliness in Psalms (“Why, my soul, are you downcast?” Psalm 42:5).
- Elijah prayed for relief from despair, assuring us God listens even in our darkest hours (1 Kings 19:4).
- Job wept in suffering—but found faith and restoration.
God’s Presence in Our Pain:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28And remember:“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3 “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5b1. 3. Job

- Signs of Depression: Job suffered devastating losses and physical illness. He cursed the day of his birth, wished he had never been born, and spoke of unrelenting grief, bitterness, and despair.

8. Paul

REMINDER: While the Bible rarely uses the modern language of “depression,” many faithful individuals faced seasons of deep despair, emotional suffering, and hopelessness.
