This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week. And, why...because while I am helping raise money to fight kid's cancer, I have a goal...a motivator...to get out and get more and more miles in.
Last September I did this too and it was a good reboot. A few pounds had found it's way to my midriff and my belt loops were screaming at me to reduce the girth so it could get back to the farthest hole.

Imagine you meet your favorite movie star, you and he spark up a conversation, followed by an invitation to be his companion to his new movie premiere. How exciting, right!? This is definitely the time to get all the warm and fuzzies going! He picks you up in a gigantic limousine. Off to dinner, the movie premier, and the afterwards get-together party. Everything is going great! After the party, you and he walk to the limo and he opens the door for you. You climb in and hear him call to the driver, “Okay. We’re good.” Then he looks at you from outside the limo with his right hand on the top edge of the back door and his left hand on the roof. Starstruck, you look back but wonder...just a bit...why he’s not climbing in after you. He bends down after pulling something from his pocket and says, “Glad you could make it.” He drops a $100 bill on the seat near you, “Here, thank you. This is for your trouble.” He pats the top of the car, shuts the door, and the driver asks, “where to?”
All assumptions aside, how did that bit of an emotional rollercoaster make you feel? Good? Bad? Or What the Heck!?
What motivated her to go to the movie premier with the movie star? Was it the “warm fuzzies” she “received” on the inside? Or was it the $100 dollars she received after the evening came to an abrupt end?
You are motivated to “go to the movies with a movie star” or “lose weight and become healthy” through one of two motivational means: intrinsic rewards or extrinsic rewards. Either way you are looking for a reward of some sort; that something that makes it all worth it. And this is true for any action you perform.

Moment by moment (or pound-by-pound) we take snapshots of our lives and compare them to the snapshots other people ALLOW us to see. We study our “picture” to see if we have what happiness requires. We are looking for any reason to be happy with what we have or what we are doing right now as we PERCEIVE happiness is defined by our respected peers and society in general. We see only the snapshots of other people’s lives and create this paradigm of what happiness really is by comparison and by observed compliance. We all...myself included...live (subconsciously) by the “rule” of pluralistic ignorance to avoid the feeling of deviating from the imagined path that (society tells us) leads to happiness.
The lady who first showed up at the door and never checked it, why? Was she afraid that walking in too early would cause those who see her as “work” have to stop their pre-8am coffee and doughnut time causing her to be the center of unwelcome attention? Why didn’t anyone else check the door? Were they afraid of the same unwelcome attention or did they just see what everyone else was doing and fall in suit? They likely observed the perceived compliance and unquestioned her motives as being the “norm” to a stressful situation: the first day at a new job.
Like Shakespeare said this about life. But I repeat his words when it comes to fad diets and lose-weight-quick promises,
“It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”

Truth of the matter is, we’re all the same. We fall subject to the working of our inner chemistry than to our inner psyche. We think we are in charge and calling the shots when indeed we are really emotionally driven beings who respond to our world less-so with logic and more-so by the waves of our feelings as that trigger all sorts of hormonal waves that ebb and flow causing us to react to life rather than respond to life. We live in this rhythmical pattern of coming and going and growth and decline followed by regrowth. We live life in comparison and try to figure out what it is we are doing so wrong and others are doing so right.
No matter what you think about that other person and how awesome their lives must be, it’s not true (not completely anyway). It’s only your brain’s perception based on your own life’s experiences, your culture, and your beliefs. They too are just like you…struggling day-to-day to get this “thing” organized. Trust me, they are not sitting on the sofa, planning to binge-watch 6 hours of Netflix, while eating a frozen Sara Lee chocolate cake, completely guilt-free because they have finished their daily half-marathon, their house is immaculate, the kids are over at her sister’s house, and her husband is out playing golf after which he plans to stop off at the grocery store and then come home and cook dinner.
We imagine all kinds of things. “They!” Why can’t we have what “they” have? We keep asking that question but we never ask who “they” are. And, we have not idea it is that we think “they” have that we want so much.
We say, “how is it she has no problem with weight?” Or, “How is it he always finds time to workout.” We ask these questions as if we know the lives they live and have lived to this moment in time. Would you trade places? Would you trade your everything for their everything? No, I am not talking about spouses, children, families, or any other with whom you are limbicly bonded.
Listen for more!
For now. Keep exercising. Just keep working at maintaining that strategic energy deficit and force your body to rely on that stored energy. Calorie-by-calorie and pound-by-pound will turn into inch-by-inch. It’s going to happen. The only thing that’ll stop you is you.

My life, like yours, is a constant search for happiness. We all truly believe, looking forward, that we have the answer to what will make us happy. And we all, looking in the rear view mirror of life, have discovered that what we thought would make us truly happy, wasn't the real answer to that state of bliss we seek. But we still think we can predict the future.

*NOTE: Depression and symptoms of depression may very well be a sign of a mental illness or a sign that someone needs to be cared for right now. There is a difference between being unhappy and being clinically depressed. Do not follow the guidance in this article if you feel you are suffering from symptoms of depression. Seek medical care now from a physician. He or she can guide you toward a resource of help.

Have you ever been told something by one person, then heard it from the TV or radio, and then read it on a billboard and after hearing it from enough sources, you consider it to be true? After all, when everyone believes something to be true...it must be true, right? But, like mamma used to say, “Just ‘cause everyone else is doin’ it doesn't mean it’s okay and you should do it too.”
Often, we think we should be doing “something” because everyone else is doing that “something.” Later, we realize that the “something” we all were doing was actually pretty silly. Then we realize we were listening to the crazy people of the world. They want a world to be the “world” they want (and sometimes force) the world to be. Then they try to suck us into their paradigms.
After 50 years of life, I have come to realize that about ⅓ of the population is having a tea-party with all their stuffed animals and dolls, another ⅓ of the population are perfectly happy being the stuffed animals and the dolls, and the other ⅓ is looking around and asking the other 2/3rds, “What in the heck are y’all doing?!?!?”

What’s the hardest exercise to perform at the gym? Squats? Burpees? Bench Press? Nope. None of them. “The hardest exercise at the gym is opening that front door and walking in.” The “gym” is just an example here; it could be putting on your shoes for a walk, pulling out the bicycle, getting the kids together for a walk-around-the-neighborhood, anything at all. Getting started is hard, right. But, once you get started, you’re unstoppable.

I got up yesterday...a workday…and knew that sometime today, I planned on getting on my bicycle for my daily ride. At 6:45am and I have just enough time to get my ride in and get cleaned up before my 8:00am “call to arms.” That means “work.” I went from the coffee cup placed on the counter to dressed-and-ready to bicycle saddle to trail in about 5 minutes. Once I decided to get my ride in right then, I didn’t give myself...my brain...time to think about it. I just did it. More on that bike ride later…
How do you just do it?

Nope. There’s never enough time. Here, at the start of my 6th decade[1] on this planet, I have come to realize that over anything in the world that I treasure, time is what I treasure the most. There’s never enough “time” to spend with those you love doing the things you love. There are two truths about time. First, time is finite; and second, that finite “amount” is unknown. Basically, you only have only so much time and you don’t know how much time you have. This is the dilemma I have, you have, and every other fellow human being on the earth has. So, when I hear you say, “I don’t have time to exercise,” I COMPLETELY understand. But, if you want more “time” you will need to find time to exercise. How? Time to exercise lies in the “margins of life.” Where are your margins?

Behavior is Learned and NOT Decided On; Choices Are Decided On
Just like there is no one thing to change in your past that would result in your present-self being perfect and healthy nor is there one, single thing that will result in you becoming the bullet-proof version of the ‘self’ you want to become. And this includes the clock striking “Monday.”
Yes. On a Monday, you can change something that will get you on the right path to developing a new pattern of behavior that will result in the version of yourself that you want to become. YES! You are absolutely right. The question is: Why are you waiting on Monday or any other time to make that change? And why in the name of all that is holy would you stop those changes midweek because you “messed up” and vow that you will start again on Monday? You will mess up...the change will not “stick” just because it’s Monday. The change will stick because you WILL mess up a few times, you’ll emotionally regroup, and you will eventually develop the behavior that will “stick.’ Then you’ll make another small change. You’ll master that change and then make another, then another, then another. Over time, all those little changes will work to make one great big change...a behavior change...and in turn, a new you!

Here is the link to this week’s article: https://mondayskeptmefat.com/2021/07/what-price-are-you-willing-to-pay
When it comes to health and weight, the concept is very similar. There’s this “thing” we want very badly. We want to lose weight, find our healthy self, and just start feeling good in the body we will have to live in for the rest of our lives. Some of us just want to lose a few pounds and wake up without pain or stiffness. Others are looking ahead and dreaming of an absolute transformation with 6-pack abs to boot. The question is: what price are you willing to pay?
There are only three “prices” you have to pay to lose weight and become healthy. But…there’s always “but.”
