  • IMF slashes global growth forecast, sees rising risk of recession
The war in Ukraine, lockdowns in China, and rising consumer prices are threatening to push the global economy to the brink of a recession. That's according to the International Monetary Fund's updated World Economic Outlook released this week. According to the lender, global economic growth will slow this year to 3.2%. It's a downgrade from the Fund's projection in April, and much lower than last year's expansion of more than 6%.

  • Russia announces cut in gas supplies to EU
Oil prices are surging for a second day following Russia's decision to cut gas supplies to Europe. That's because if Europe runs short on gas, companies in the bloc could choose to start using crude products like diesel to keep their machines running. The European Union has already banned some oil imports from Russia, which is the world's second-largest exporter of the commodity.
For the energy conflict, we were joined by Naeem Aslam, who is the chief market analyst at AvaTrade in London.

  • EU looks for other suppliers amid Nord Stream anxiety
We start the show with the short-lived stand-off between Europe and Russia. Moscow's main natural gas pipeline to Germany, the Nord Stream 1, went down for maintenance for 10 days. And officials in Berlin and Brussels feared the Kremlin would keep it shut as a political weapon against the bloc. Taps were turned back on again on Thursday, but the uncertainty has still pushed leaders to find more reliable partners. Paolo Montecillo reports.

Russia and Ukraine ranked among the top three grain producers in the world before the conflict began in February. Now about a third of their exports have been trapped in ports. Russian and Ukraine are both leading suppliers of foodstuffs and fertilizers to global markets. An estimated 400M people worldwide rely on Ukrainian food. Before the war, 30% of global wheat exports, 31% of barley and 60% of sunflower oil came from Russia and Ukraine.
