The UK has reportedly allowed the Chinese telecoms giant, Huawei, to help build its 5G network, despite warnings from the US that Beijing could use the infrastracture to spy. 5G promises much faster mobile data speeds, wider coverage and more stable connections, but Huawei is fast becoming a pariah in the race to build the network. Nearly half of America's waterways are polluted and it's having a detrimental effect on the marine life and the communities whose livelihoods depend on it. Chesapeake Bay on America's east coast used to have an abundance of naturally grown oysters. But over-fishing and pollution decimated the environment. Now, through the restoration of oyster production, the precious mollusks are not only cleaning up the bay, they're also helping to sustain those who live off the water. The United States has sharply tightened energy sanctions against Iran, as it looks to cut the country's oil exports to zero. Sanctions waivers granted by the Trump administration to eight countries that import Iranian oil expired on Thursday, ushering in a new era of uncertainty for the oil market. The US announced unilateral sanctions against Iran in November. That was after the Trump administration abandoned a nuclear non-proliferation treaty with Tehran and the world's major powers. Turkey is one of the eight countries now at risk of US sanctions. Ankara depends on Iranian oil for much of its energy needs. And as TRT World's diplomatic correspondent Andrew Hopkins reports, it's working with Tehran to ensure the crude will keep on fueling Turkish factories. Millions of people around the world have taken to the streets to mark International Workers' Day, demanding better rights and employment conditions. The event dates back to the 1880s when labour movements in many countries were fighting for the right to form unions, earn overtime pay and limit workdays to eight hours. On average, people now work half as many hours each week as they did back then. But income disparities are still widespread. In France, Yellow Vest protesters have been rallying for six months over rising taxes and stagnating incomes. One of the world's biggest defence exhibitions has kicked off in Istanbul. Turkey is showcasing several domestically designed systems to thousands of foreign buyers. Turkey's central bank has published its second inflation report for the year. Inflation currently stands at around 20%, after hitting a 15-year high of more than 25% in October.
