  • Market Movers: EU to cut off oil imports from Russia
At the beginning of the week, EU leaders agreed to ban 75% of Russian crude imports to the bloc. That's part of the EU's sixth sanctions package on Russia since the conflict in Ukraine started three months ago.
How different will this sixth round of sanctions be? What will it really entail? We spoke to Sophie Udubasceanu, energy analyst at ICIS to get answers.

  • China rolls out stimulus to boost economy after outbreak
In China, a surge in COVID-19 cases has forced the government to slap social restrictions on vast portions of the population. The world's second-largest economy has just emerged from its worst outbreak since 2020. It was a crisis that leaders chose to confront with the use of strict lockdowns, even as the rest of the world learns to live with the virus. Now officials in Beijing are trying to chart a path to a steady recovery.
Economist Taha Arvas joined us in the studio. He's an adjunct professor of finance at Bogazici University.

  • OPEC+ surprises markets with larger than expected output hike
The world's oil exporters surprised markets this week, announcing a larger-than-expected hike in output. The Saudi-led alliance OPEC and its allies said they would pump an extra 648,000 barrels of crude out of the ground every day, starting July. That's 50% higher than this month's increase. But oil prices still shot up, with investors viewing the adjustment as too small for a global economy growing increasingly thirsty for crude.
For more, let's hear from energy analyst Sophie Unubasceanu, who says oil price hikes will be difficult to stop.

  • Saudi Arabia to reportedly hike oil output to offset Russian dip
After months of pressure, particularly from Washington, Saudi Arabia is finally pumping more fuel out of the ground. According to reports, the Kingdom is set to announce that it's raising its output. That's sent the price of crude falling 2% to around $114 a barrel. The move is designed to offset the reduction in supply out of Russia, which has been bombarded by western sanctions over Ukraine.
We spoke to Han Tan, who is chief market analyst at the Exinity Group in Abu Dhabi. He talked about what may have compelled Saudi Arabia to play ball with the US.

  • Australian economy grew 3.3% in first quarter, beating forecasts
The Australian economy grew more than expected in the first quarter, in a sign that the nation is regaining its footing after the pandemic. GDP expanded by 3.3% in January to March. The country's biggest challenge on the economic front is inflation. Consumer prices rose more than 5% in March, the most since the year 2000.
For more on Australia’s economy, we were joined by Stephen Innes, who is managing partner at API Asset Management in Bangkok.

  • Chinese firms optimistic of rapid recovery as pandemic curbs end
Asian share prices are getting a boost as major Chinese cities prepare to emerge from a weeks-long lockdown. Data for the month of May showed factory output continued to shrink, as those COVID restrictions kept workers at home and paralyzed supply lines. The manufacturing sector's Purchasing Manager's Index stood at 49.6. But the number was a 2 point improvement from the previous month, a sign that local busineses are on track for a quick recovery.
For more on Chinese economy, we spoke to Danni Hewson who is a financial analyst at AJ Bell in London.

  • Crude benchmark Brent hits $120 a barrel, highest in two months
It's a bad start to the week for most consumers, as the price of oil climbed to its highest in about two months. The international crude benchmark Brent is back up above $120 a barrel. That's as European nations continue their political wrangling on a sixth round of sanctions on Moscow, which include a gradual ban on Russian oil imports.
For more, we spoke to David Madden. He's a market analyst at Equiti Capital in London.

  • Cryptocurrency markets tank as investors dump risky assets
Just half a year ago, cryptocurrencies like bitcoin were heralded as this generation's version of gold - the best assets to buy to insulate your portfolio from the booms and busts of financial markets. Since then, that's been proven a fallacy, following a wholesale crash that's wiped out more than a trillion dollars in wealth. Paolo Montecillo reports.

  • 50 companies applied to list on Tadawul exchange this year
Rising international oil prices and the success of Saudi Aramco's stock market listing are encouraging other companies in Saudi Arabia to sell shares to the public. At the beginning of this year, 50 Saudi firms had announced plans to list on the country's Tadawul stock exchange, through Initial Public Offerings. But as global economies slow, international investors appear less willing to place fresh bets. And that could knock the wind out of the sails for the Kingdom's IPO boom.
We spoke to Tranversal Consulting President and author of the book, Saudi Inc, Ellen Wald. She explains the factors driving the boom in Saudi Arabia's stock market listings and what could make it go bust.
