  • Shares in China's Weibo fall as much as 7% in Hong Kong debut
Shares in China's Twitter copycat Weibo fell more than 7% in their first day of trading in Hong Kong. It's the latest sign that investors are still worried about the scope of Beijing's crackdown on tech giants. Weibo joins firms like Alibaba and JD.com, which are both listed in Hong Kong and New York. Didi, the ride-hailing company similar to Uber, is taking it a step further. It plans to de-list from the New York Stock Exchange in favour of Hong Kong, just half a year after its $4.4B IPO in the US. Chinese internet firms have been under increased regulatory scrutiny over their presence in American financial markets, which means they're covered by rules written in Washington.
For more on the story, Richard Kimber joined TRT World’s Newshour from Hong Kong.

  • Auto suppliers warn shift to electric vehicles could cost Europe 501,000 jobs | Money Talks
The European Union is on track to ban the sale of new cars that burn diesel and gasoline by 2035. That's putting pressure on the continent's auto giants to start phasing out cars that run on fossil fuels and replace them with green alternatives. Environmental activists say it's a much-needed change due to the worsening effects of the climate crisis. But suppliers that have supported the auto sector for decades warn it could render hundreds of thousands of jobs obsolete.

  • China shares rally as Evergrande prepares for restructuring | Money Talks
Chinese share prices rallied on Tuesday as heavily-indebted property developer China Evergrande prepares for a billion-dollar restructuring. Beijing is taking an active role in that process, to prevent the disorderly collapse of what was once the country's top seller of homes and office space. The central bank is also easing monetary policy settings to give the economy an extra boost to reverse a recent slowdown in economic growth.

  • South Africa GDP shrinks 1.5% in Q3 over riots, power cuts | Money Talks
South Africa's GDP contracted 1.5 percent between July and September, compared to the previous quarter as the economy reeled from a deepening energy crisis as well as the July looting and arson attacks following the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma. The outlook for the rest of the year also appears dreary after a number of countries slapped travel restrictions on South Africa over the emergence of the Omicron variant.
