MERRY CHRISTMAS (One Day Early)!!! I am sure that many of you will spend your day enjoying time with family and friends, giving presents, receiving presents, and partaking in many other Christmas traditions. It is so easy to get caught up in all of the things that this day is not about, so I believe that it is important that I share with you what today is actually about and what that means for you and me. Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ is a huge part of the Christian life, because without his birth, he would not have died to save us from our sins. I want to share the good news with you, today, that our God loved us SO much that he gave His ONLY Son so that whoever believes in Him will have ETERNAL life (John 3:16). God bless you all today, and I hope that your Christmas is not void of Christ himself.

Repaying your student loans may be something that you have been putting off for some time now. I don‘t want you to be under the weight of this debt forever, so you need to take every advantage you can get to pay off said debt efficiently. Given that the president is extending payment restart date, we can pay on student loans with no accrued interest in the meantime, basically turning our debt into zero-interest debt. This can give you a jumpstart on paying off your student loans and create some early momentum in doing so as well.

I know that it may not be what you want to hear, but being financially successful requires sacrifice. The good news is that anything worth having does. We cannot skip steps to financial freedom without feeling the pain of skipping those steps in the future. Delaying gratification is something we must do, but it is not something that should keep us from enjoying our lives. You can have things you want, but you must make sure your wants don‘t supersede your future needs.

It is amazing what investing over the long-term can do for your life. Not only is it necessary to meet most of your financial goals, it can also lead to a flip in the risk/return relationship that people attribute to financial assets like stocks and bonds. I am not saying that bonds are never warranted as an investment vehicle, but I am saying that holding stocks for long periods of time can maximize returns AND decrease risk in a portfolio, contrary to popular belief.

This first fundamental that I want to cover with you all is what the stock market is. This is something that most take for granted, but if you don‘t understand what the stock market is, you have no business putting any money into it. When we can better understand stocks, funds, stock exchanges, and all the stock market basics, we can move forward with some of the finer points of the stock market that I tend to cover on a regular basis. Investing in stocks over the long-run is one of the best ways to build wealth, so we need to learn all we can about this market.

If you ever want to make financial progress of any kind, it all starts with knowing where you are today. If you do not know your starting point, how can you ever know where you are trying to get? One big metric that we need to take heed of in our financial lives is our net worth. This truly tells us how much wealth we have actually built. To keep up with this, I suggest doing an annual net worth statement. This is an easy and great tool to track your annual progress and make sure you are moving in the right direction financially.

The Fed has an important set of decisions to juggle, and investors are expecting remarks from Jerome Powell this afternoon. Inflation has made it undeniable that the Fed must act and do so in a timely fashion. The question is what that action looks like and what a timely fashion truly is. Financial markets will be hanging onto every word today as the ideas of tapering, rasing rates, and balance sheet runoffs are discussed.

I like how we all think that we are good investors just because we make some short-term profits. This does not mean we are successful, nor does it make us actual investors. We make a lot of mistakes, constantly, that keep us on the wrong side of investment returns. We are not patient. We do not take long time horizons. We get our investment advice from social media. We won‘t stop looking at market movements throughout the day. We are not good investors, but cleaning up some of our controllable mistakes can make us a lot better!

There are instances in our lives that we have to be a bit more intense than others in our actions and decisions. It is no different when it comes to our personal finances.
