Of the books that have impacted my view of personal finances over time, this one may take the cake. In The Total Money Makeover, Dave Ramsey lays out a straightforward strategy for how to get out of debt and live your best life financially. Much of what I try to teach you all in each episode is grounded in a Dave Ramsey financial tenant. At the end of every year, it is good to take a look back at how your financial position has changed over the course of the year and how it has changed relative to years past. A great way in which this can be done is through the use of the annual net worth statement. Making these net worth statements is not a difficult task, but it does take some intentionality and the willingness to look your current financial situation in the face. Whether we will admit it or not, all of us would like to pay the least that we possibly can in taxes, thus keeping the most of our income that we can. For those of us who have investments in taxable accounts, there is a way to decrease your tax burden. You can harvest your losses, meaning sell to realize the loss that you may currently have on a certain investment, and you can use it to deduct from your income this year and any potential capital gains that you may have for this year and beyond.
