Canadian producer Jay Tripwire has been consistently top-notch tech house and deep house since the turn of the millennium, with a prolific output that has graced dozens of quality imprints. Although varied in his output, he can usually be counted on to serve up a slick groove with just the right amount of atmospheric texture. And it just so happens that when we contacted him, he was readying the release of a very tasty improvised live set—which we naturally pounced upon. Blending elements of electro, dub, deep techno, ambient and breakbeat, it’s seriously diverse mix.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Future music for final days. I am DJ who plays a lot of different stuff, I think of music as good or bad, not genres or labels or shit like that. I tend to have a lot of science-fiction futuristic elements that are like Woody Allen’s interpretation of the future in the ‘60s (if that run on sentence makes any sense whatsoever). I have no idea what I am doing to be honest, or what the sound is. It’s shit from the heart. Some things resonate with people, some things might be too out there, I don't care.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Music is from the cosmos, you just channel it from the source. We’re just conduits in the true sense of art and vision. I am inspired by Kraftwerk, Underground Resistance, Vangelis, Moroder, Wu-Tang, Slayer, Doc Martin, Mr. C, dub and reggae and the really underground Italo disco records from the late-’70s into the ‘80s.I like obscure rock, synth polka and backwards spoken word. I'm inspired by 27-year-old sandwiches living in tupperware. I used to really like to listen to radio stations in between stations to hear the secret FREQuencies. If I wasn't doing music they woulda locked me up in a rubber room with a box of crayons a long ass time ago.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s me remixing myself in a live PA format, I wanted to do something that is really genre-less. Is it house? Is it Techno? Is it ‘80s electro? Who the fuck knows. "It is what it is". I sketched it with the listener in mind instead of a club or warehouse rave.

Master of producing deep electronic house that sounds incredibly organic, Canadian producer Fred Everything has always brought a real sense of musicality to his productions. The kind where if you take the drums away, the track still sounds excellent. And indeed on his mix for us, he’s taken the opportunity to dig through his extensive catalogue and showcase some of his beatless creations as well as his better-known floor-focused concoctions. A former stalwart of 20:20 Vision, his two decades of productions have landed on pretty much every major deep house imprint, including bastions like Freerange, OM Records, Large Music and Sonar Kollektiv. More recently his output has graced Atjazz Record Company, Local Talk and Tsuba, always with the same compelling results.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Definitely always on the deep side of things but without losing track of the dancefloor. I also like to use dub techniques in my music a lot.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Lots of different styles of music, mostly from the ‘70s to today, as well as life in general, or simply a night out listening to a good DJ or band.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I digged deep in my vault to find some exclusives. There are a few unreleased and to-be-released tracks/remixes. I also wanted to showcase the ambient side of my production by adding a few Beatless (Outro) Versions I did in the past.

The fact that the mighty St. Germain entrusted long-time friend Atjazz to be the opening act on his comeback album tour – 15 years after his last LP – speaks volumes about the UK house/afro/soul/jazz fusionist’s reputation. Producing since the mid-’90s when he released early material on free party legends Digs & Woosh’s DiY Discs imprint in tandem with scoring music for computer games (the original Tomb Raider, no less), he has had a prolific and hugely varied outputs. Five full-length albums; remixes for the likes of Nitin Sawnhey, Jazzanova, Bob Sinclar and of course St. Germain; his labels Mantis Recordings and now Atjazz Record Company; a collaborative project Version alongside Charles Webster; his catalogue is burgeoning. It made for ripe pickings for a soulful journey in his Monologues mix, packed with exclusives, classy vocals and the breadth of his styles.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Seriously hip-shaking beats with a very soft center!

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

I've always been inspired by jazz and Herbie Hancock is my hero. He's never stood still, he's always changed his sound, he's always innovated and his curiosity with technology is the same as mine. I also love Weather Report, anything on ECM and modern hip-hop soul. House music isn't something I listen too; it's something I live and do.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I wanted to create a mix that spanned across a few different times of my life, to show a little of my influences, collaborations and remixes, a tater menu if you will! There are many more better known pieces of work but I wanted to show a little more of "me".

    Tracklist:

  • M29: Leon Revol
Check out Leon's ‘Clear Definition’ EP on our label Monologues Records at http://bit.ly/m11beatport and catch him headline our next party at Farbfernseher in Berlin on April 2: https://www.facebook.com/events/1684485181808206/

22-year-old Bordeaux producer Leon Revol sent us some demos a while back and we instantly fell in love with his sound. Deep, musical and classy, his productions belied his experience, but once we heard more we knew it was no fluke. With previous releases for the likes of Apersonal, Carré Bleu Records and Moutade Musique (as Leonid.) and his gorgeous recent effort for Kolour Recordings, his output is both increasingly prolific and very consistent, drawing on old soul, disco, funk, Brazilian styles and his own innate sense of musicality.

Rounding up some of his output to date plus some unreleased, untitled beauties, his Monologues mix is a sumptuous journey.

How would you describe your sound?

I really don’t know how to describe it. I would say that it’s sometimes an immersive slo-mo house with a touch of jazzy stuffs and sometimes more alternative and deep things. When I started to make sounds, I was still playing drums and desired using lots of samples. Now I feel that I’m going on more electronic stuffs without leaving the power of a sample. What is sure is that I’m always on the lookout for hypnotic, warm or nostalgic sounds.

What and who inspires you and influences your sound?

I’m influenced by a wide group of musicians from old to modern, from hip-hop to house (Azymuth, Deodato, Common, Session Victim, Move D..). For sure the disco-jazz side comes from my parents, with their old records I grew up with. The other side with deep influences comes from all my mates who share good stuffs and from hours and hours of digging. Also parties in clubs.

Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?

Most of these sounds are already out. Some of these were made in 2009 when I had just my computer and records from my parents. There is another that I just finished a few weeks ago. I picked about a track of each year since 2009. Strange to mix my own sounds!

*Check out our next party in Berlin with Leon Revol + Ben Start on 2 April 2016: https://www.facebook.com/events/1684485181808206/*

The multifarious sounds of Joe Europe first appeared on our radar with his eponymous EP for Vitalik back in 2012, laden with breezy melodic grooves on a proper deep house tip. Raised on a diet of Shropshire’s free party scene and his big brother’s Dave Clarke’s mixtapes, he runs the Ears Have Eyes label and parties and has received praise from the likes of Resident Advisor and Ibiza Voice for his productions. Since he first came to our attention, he has taken his sound into deeper, more atmospheric territory, with a new acid gurgler on Flumo Recordings (included here) a particular highlight alongside output for FALK, Bokharia and Teleskopic. His Monologues mix collates a bevvy of his unreleased sounds, ranging from ambient textures to 303 workouts and the deepest of techno, all delivered at a delightfully chuggy pace.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I would describe my sound as the product of over two decades of loving dance music, both electronic and otherwise and all that comes with it. I guess I stick pretty firmly within the realms of house and techno, and listening back to this it seems I quite like my acid too! I love the mechanical element of techno and I think that's in my sound, but I also love music to have soul and maybe a bit of funk to it as well.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

As I said before I've been a huge fan of electronic music since I was about 11. Music-wise I would have to say my influences are everything from Dave Clarke (my earliest encounter with electronic music) to LFO to UR to Metalheadz to disco to funk to jazz to The Cure to Derrick Carter. Beyond music though, my influences come from spending all my free time reading about ancient history and science/the future. Frank Herbert, Kurt Vonnegut, proper curry, The Simpsons. My cat [pictured] has been a big inspiration since we got him a few months back.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

All of the tracks on this mix are unreleased except for one (Deep Point - which will be out soon on Flumo). I write a lot of music and this is just a cross-section of what I've got going on. Some has been sent to labels, most hasn't and probably never will. I guess it's just nice to show people where my head is at but you will have to excuse their lack of polish. Most of these tracks were never intended to see the light of day!
