Beach Lovers, Brace Yourselves!
This is your Sunday surf safety update from the National Weather Service, and today's conditions are no joke. We're looking at a HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK across New York's coastal zones until 6 PM, so listen up!
Mother Nature is serving up a cloudy, potentially rainy day with east winds howling between 15 to 20 miles per hour. Surf heights are hovering around 3 to 4 feet, and water temperatures are sitting in the chilly upper 60s. Not exactly tropical paradise conditions.
For all you beach enthusiasts from Coney Island to the Hamptons, today is NOT the day to test your swimming skills. Life-threatening rip currents are likely, which means staying OUT of the water is your safest bet.
If you absolutely must venture near the waves, here's your survival guide: Always bring a flotation device, swim near a lifeguard, and if you get caught in a rip current, don't panic! Relax, float, and either swim parallel to the shore or wave for help.
UV index is low, so sunscreen is optional, but caution is mandatory. Tide times vary by location, with most low tides happening around noon. Sunrise was early, sunset comes around 6:40 PM, giving you plenty of daylight to admire the waves from a safe distance.
Remember, these beaches will be closed for forecasts until Memorial Day weekend next year, so stay smart, stay safe, and respect the ocean's power today!
