Surf's up, beach goers, but not in the way you might hope! The National Weather Service is sounding the alarm with a high rip current risk that's going to keep you out of the water today. We're looking at a cloudy, potentially rainy Sunday along the New York coastline, with east winds whipping up some seriously dangerous surf conditions.
From Brooklyn to the Hamptons, beaches are experiencing around 3 to 4 foot waves that pack a punch. Temperatures are hovering in the upper 60s, which might tempt you to hit the shore, but trust me - you'll want to keep your toes in the sand today. Those east winds are cranking between 15 and 20 miles per hour, creating a recipe for treacherous rip currents.
Lifeguards are basically pleading: stay out of the water! If you somehow find yourself caught in a rip current, remember the golden rules - don't panic, float, and if possible, swim parallel to the shore. Your best bet is to wave or yell for help if you can't make it back on your own.
Low tides are rolling in around midday - Jones Inlet at 11:55, Fire Island at 11:53, and Shinnecock at 12:07. Sunset comes early today at around 6:40 PM, so pack your plans accordingly.
The silver lining? This is the last surf report until Memorial Day weekend next year. So beach lovers, stay safe, grab a hot drink, and enjoy the view from dry land. Mother Nature is serving up some serious attitude today!
