    Centennial Middle School hosted their first-ever robotics competition on Saturday. There, Cameron Culver, Kyle Whitcomb and Teagan Kolbeth wowed the judges and wracked up enough points on challenges to qualify for the state tournament. And another team of Centennial students — Kai Amundson, Jordyn Simo, Sydney Bell and Shiloh Warthen had already qualified.

  • Montrose born snowboarder competes in 2022 Winter Olympics; MCSD reevaluates COVID-19 regulations

    Lucas Foster was at the tail end of his second run in the men’s halfpipe at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, when he made a minor but event-changing error. 

    The 22 year old popped an inch too early and crashed into the lip of the halfpipe. It sent him flying in midair before he regained his balance and slid towards the middle of the pipe.

    An arrest has been made in the double slaying discovered two weeks ago in Paonia. 65 year old Mark Burns who once lived on the Black Bridge Road property of Michael Arnold and Donna Gallegos, was arrested Wednesday.

    Montrose County School District is further relaxing COVID policies. So here’s the deal. Regular symptom screening upon entry will be stopped, and the district is returning to its former illness policy. And starting on February 28th, quarantines after exposure will no longer be required. There also won’t be any more contact tracing.

  • Boebert has raised more money than any other candidate in CD-3; SIPS on Main

    Reports from the Federal Elections Commission show that Lauren Boebert continues to raise more money than other candidates for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. She raised over $800,000 in the last three months of 2021. That brings the total amount of funds raised so far to $3.58 million.

  • How Montrose students in mental health crisis get help; Ignite Montrose

    When a self-identified parent called into Montrose High School on February 2nd to report that their student had brought a gun to school, the building went into lockdown for more than three hours while teams of law enforcement officers swept the building for weapons — none were found.

    Montrose County School District Executive Director of Operations Jim Pavlich attributed the cooperative and speedy response to the partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, the Center for Mental Health, Hilltop and the 7th Judicial District.

  • Montrose High School goes on lockdown following threat; 7th annual Taste of Spring

    A reported weapons threat at Montrose High School left part of the student body in lockdown on Wednesday. But ultimately, after law enforcement agents conducted a thorough search, word came: everyone was safe and no weapon had been found. Montrose Police Chief Blaine Hall said that no arrests were made.

  • Boundaries for school board reps are shifting; $3 million water transmission line project begins

    The boundaries for the school board representatives are changing to account for population shifts. The last time that redistricting happened was back in 2002. So since the boundaries have not been adjusted in nearly two decades, the populations of the districts have become out of balance.
