Samantha lost her period for two years after coming off birth control in 2020. She was struggling with disordered eating, dissociated from her body, carrying a lot of sexual shame, and had no idea any of it was connected.

Getting it back led her to Chinese herbs, then to eating a lot more, then eventually to becoming a root cause functional hormone specialist who works with high functioning women who are burnt out and depleted... and wondering why nothing is working.

Nobody really talks about what it feels like to be in your early 40s and not quite know who you're becoming.

In this episode, I sit down with Lyssandra, a nutritionist, herbalist, and women's health educator in Los Angeles who is 41 and right in the thick of her early perimenopause. Tori never really had bad periods. But after her first baby, her cycle became almost effortless.And when she started to understand why, it reframed everything she thought she knew about what birth actually does to a woman's body.

In this episode we get into the TCM reason birth heals period pain and stagnation, what it's like to bleed as a mother of a newborn and a toddler, and one of my favorite moments in this whole episode — the day Tori's four-year-old looked at her period underwear and said "ew, yucky blood," and what Tori said back to her.

We also talk about her two births — a home birth in Copenhagen where she realized how much she deferred to the authority in the room, and a free birth in California where she birthed an 11-pound baby standing over the toilet in four hours with no tear and no drama.

Savannah's first bleed story starts with her mom looking at the toilet paper and saying "oh, fuck."

She never put that together until we were sitting here recording. And that's kind of what this whole episode is - a woman finally connecting the dots of her own story and realizing how deep the wound of unprotected womanhood actually runs.

Savannah Dew is a doula in Central Texas, and she has one of the most extraordinary life stories I have ever had the honor of holding space for.
