Moon Moment

Maher-king the end of our first season, take a John-t with us down memory lane with special guest, writer, and animation fiend, John Maher! Join us as we discuss the history of magical girl anime, the West’s influence on the genre, gasp in horror at the shows (some of us) HAVEN’T watched, and attempt to answer the question: Is Sailor Moon a Shojo show or a Shonen one?

In the penultimate episode of the first season of Moon Moment, we talk about episodes 43-46. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about the finale of the first season of Sailor Moon, known infamously in the moonie community as D-Point. Bonus points if you can tell where Drucilla’s voice starts to waver as she talks about the girls’ deaths. Be sure to check back next week for our wrap up episode with a special guest! Also, trigger warning for this episode for discussions of suicide as it relates to the manga at 18:21-19:15.

In this week’s episode, Drucilla’s got ladybugs on the brain while the Scouts wrangle a brainless Endymion (who just can’t seem to be evil). Surprises are in store but we just want to rewrite some serious plot/characters holes. Join us for episodes 38-42 and watch out for spoilers for the season 3 finale of Miraculous Ladybug from 29:55-31:00.

It’s a lighter episode this week as we cover episodes 33-37. Sailor Venus gets a spectacular introduction, and the past is revealed when the silver crystal appears and outs Usagi as the moon princess. Listen to us debate moon moments, try to CSI what really went down when Mamoru got stabbed, and sigh at the idea of owning the real dress that Usagi’s princess dress was based on.

In this week’s episode, we finish up the rainbow crystal arc and squee about one of the best episodes of the season (as well as recoil from one of the worst). Then we get real and talk about the unhealthy behavior demonstrated by Umino, and Usagi’s reckless encouragement of him. Join us as we discuss episodes 29-32.

The line begins here for the Makoto Kino fan club! In episodes 25-28, we meet the incomparable Sailor Jupiter and discover the innumerable ways she’s awesome. We also discuss the annoying attempt to manufacture tension within the Senshi by calling Usagi’s leadership into question and a number of iconic rainbow crystal episodes.

Covering episodes 20-24, it's another long one for our sixth episode as we continue to tackle the Nephrite/Naru relationship, though Drucilla has a new perspective on it thanks to this re-watch. And we end with a fascinating discussion of how events between the couple may have played out had Usagi not been Sailor Moon.

In our fifth episode, we have a double dose of uncomfortable situations. That's right, it's time for us to talk about the inappropriate relationships between Nephrite and Naru, and Mamoru and Rei as we cover episodes 15-19.

In our fourth episode, we have a lot to talk about as Rei Hino comes onto the field. Also, we remember that we're looking at a 30 year old show with a 2021 perspective. It’s gonna be a long one as we cover episodes 10-14.

In our third episode covering episodes 8-9, we discover that moon moments can reverberate throughout the Sailor Moon multiverse and that Sailor Mercury's intro episode is deeper than you think.
