On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are saving Los Angeles from the most terrifying disaster of all time. We watched the 2015 film from George Erschbamer, Fire Twister.
If what we’ve seen on the Syfy channel is to believed, and I have no reason to think it shouldn’t, then the mightiest hero of our time is the amazing Casper Van Dien.
Ask yourself, is there anything this guy can’t do? Not only has he saved Earth from multiple bug-related invasions and eradicated at least two twisters, but he’s got a jawline that just won’t quit.
He’s the hero we need and deserve. When the shit hits the fan, some may think to call on the Avengers or the Justice League, but they’re all chumps. There’s only one person who has the ability and debonair style we need. Go get ‘em, Casper.

July 24, 2023 Dante’s Peak: Just Kick It: The Ultimate ‘90s Fix

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to get anybody to just believe for once about that damn dangerous volcano! We watched the 1997 film from Roger Donaldson, Dante’s Peak.
I don’t know about you, but if I’ve got a confident and renowned volcanologist hanging out in my quaint mountain town at the base of a giant volcano desperately warning everybody of an impending eruption, I’m going to listen to the guy.
It’s understandable why most of the town didn’t want to listen to the guy—it’s their home, after all. It would take a lot for most people to pack up their entire lives and leave.
However, I’m no volcano expert. I shouldn’t be the one judging whether or not a volcano is safe to be around. If I hear even the first whisper that something bad could be brewing, I’m going to seriously consider getting out as soon as possible.
But then, if everyone did that, this wouldn’t be much of a film, would it? It was a tragedy, to be sure, but we can all rest easy knowing that the cute dog made it out alive.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean have got each other’s backs as we face down the meanest, baddest wildfires out there. We watched the 2017 film from Joseph Kosinski, Only the Brave.
SPOILER WARNING: If you’re not aware of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the crew of wildfire fighters from Arizona, then do yourself a favor and watch this film before reading about them or listening to this podcast.
For those who have seen this film or know their inspirational story, then we’re on the same page. A more courageous bunch of firefighting professionals could not be found. The same goes for any person out there battling those devastating fires every year.
Living so close to an area prone to igniting, I’m more indebted to their work than I could ever say. They deserve every ounce of respect a person can give them, and I’m giving them my all.
Enjoy this excellent film and, if I do say so myself, episode of the podcast.

Lurking deep below the earth in large pockets of open nothingness, a dark and fearsome brood of monsters lie in wait. Biding their time, or perhaps just snoozing for a long time, they will be the end of this world.
The only two people who could possibly save us all from certain doom? Batman and David Wooderson (from Dazed and Confused, of course).
When it comes to killing dragons, there’s no one finer. They’re ready in a moment’s notice and are willing to lay their own lives on the line for the good of us all. With them in our corner, we’ve got nothing to worry about.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are learning what it means to be brothers while a bunch of cool-looking flames dance around behind us. We watched the 1991 film from Ron Howard, Backdraft.
One might think that this film is nothing more than a bunch of firefighting bros being loud, hazing each other, and occasionally preventing a building from burning down, but one might be wrong!
Not only is this film packed to the rafters with affecting family drama, there’s also a surprise detective subplot. And who’s the grizzled, Batman-like lead investigator? None other than Robert freaking De Niro!
Maybe you already know all this stuff, but if you’re anything like me, then this will be welcome news to you. Backdraft is not the sort of film that should only live on the cluttered floor of a boy’s dorm room.
This is a riveting film with surprising emotional heft. It also offer a fine way for us to kick off our month of fire-themed films. Get ready for some heat!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are fighting for our lives to bring you this B-movie episode. We watched the 1995 film from Paul W.S. Anderson, Mortal Kombat.
Watching this movie is like playing the original game without inputting the secret code to turn on “Blood Mode.” That’s ABACABB for those looking for a hit of nostalgia.
Yeah, there’s going to be a bunch of fighting, someone’s going to say “flawless victory” (even if it isn’t quite earned), and souls are going to be sucked out of bodies.
What there’s not going to be are the bone-crunching brawls and gruesome fatalities for which the game series became infamous. That’s what people want when they watch a Mortal Kombat film.
What does a movie like this do? It makes for an excellent conversation. Listen on the find out if we grade this B-movie brilliant, a flunder, or the dreaded blunder.

Between this film, Blow Out, and the fourth season of Dexter, I’m beginning to think that I may run screaming from him if I ever meet John Lithgow in real life.
If you’ve seen 3rd Rock from the Sun, you think he might be a cuddly teddy bear, but apparently the man has a great darkness in him. He seems to only let it out for these great action films. But maybe…
Maybe there’s more to him than meets the eye.
All that being said, I’m totally kidding. He was great in this fun film. I totally want to meet him and I promise I won’t cast any nervous sideways glances at him if I do. Also, Stallone was pretty great in this film

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are singing our damn hearts out to the ones we love the most. We watched the 1998 film from Frank Coraci, The Wedding Singer.
The next time I’m at a wedding, I’m going to remember this film and befriend the event’s wedding singer. Heck, even the DJ if there’s one of those instead. You never know when they could be going through the roughest time of their life.
Like Robbie Hart, they could have just gotten their whole world torn apart. They could be wallowing in misery. They could be engaging in some pretty self-destructive behavior, like ruining some poor kid’s bar mitzvah.
We should all think of the wedding singers in our lives. Maybe they wanted to be impressive rock gods, but instead have to spend every weekend belting out the same old nonsense.
To all the Robbie Harts out there, we see you. We see you.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to make it big in this wild and crazy world. We watched the 1995 film from Paul Verhoeven, Showgirls.
Don’t you just hate it when you try chasing your dreams of becoming a genuine star in Las Vegas and there’s just the worst person in the world (according to you) standing in your way?
All you want to do is get naked in front of hundreds of people a night, dance like your life depends on it, and cash a big paycheck. Maybe along the way you could have the strangest back-breaking pool sex of your life.
But nooo! Your dreams of glitz and glamor are foiled at every turn by the old guard and, more to the point, the godawful men running the show. Maybe if there was an “accident,” then everything could go your way.
This is a bit of a divergence from our usual B movie fare, but it inspired a great conversation. Enjoy finding out what we rated this film, and friends, dance on!
