On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are really trying to hold back the tears and heartbreak this time. We watched the 1999 film from Frank Darabont, The Green Mile.
If someone had told me before watching this film that a drama about death row inmates in 1930s Louisiana was going to be one of the most devastating things I’ve ever seen…
Well, I think I would have believed them, but I still wouldn’t have been prepared for just how heartbroken I would be by the time the credits started rolling.
Nearly every single character in this masterfully crafted film is able to work their way into your heart. Even Mr. Jangles, the dear mouse friend of these characters, is a dear friend by the end.
Now Percy? That sorry sack of hateful crap? Look, I wouldn’t wish harm on anybody else, but I’ll just say I’m not too broken up about what happened to him. Enjoy the episode to find out what that was!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are going out on a secret road trip! We watched the 2015 film from Todd Haynes, Carol.
Ugh… Men, am I right? A bunch of jealous, shallow, timid bunch of jerk-faces who can’t seem to let love blossom if it ever interferes what they think is rightfully theirs. Doubly so for jerk-faces in the ‘50s.
Would it have been so wrong to let Therese and Carol travel the world together, seeing the sights and having romantic, steamy sex in roadside motel rooms? Is their obvious love for each other a bad thing?
I say, HELL NO! In any era, hell no. I don’t give a damn if times were different in the ‘50s, their love was genuine and beautiful.
There’s still a long way to go, but at least Therese and Carol wouldn’t have to hide their relationship now the way they did then. That’s probably one of the greatest tragedies of this film: If only they had been alive and together several decades later…

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just trying to keep this damned family together! We watched the 1974 film from John Cassavetes, A Woman Under the Influence.
Did you wake up this morning and think to yourself, “Boy, I sure would like to watch a movie that’ll make me feel like most of life can be hectic and careless, that I should never have a family of my own, and encourage frustration about how mental health problems were handled in the past”?
Well then, have we ever got a film for you!
In our continuing month of “films that broke us,” we’re delving into one of the tentpole features of ‘70s indie filmmaking. One of the greats, John Cassavetes, directs Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk into some of the greatest performances of their respective careers.
This is a demanding film, both of your time and of your heart. Like all films of that quality, it’ll also reward the time and effort you put into it. Good luck putting yourself back together again!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are finally moving out of the garden shed! We watched the 2016 film from Rachel Tunnard, Adult Life Skills.
The subtitle of this episode is especially meaningful this time. As we kick off our month-long series of “films that broke us,” we found that it’s important to understand the many qualities of grief.
There’s the crushing weight of it that many of us are familiar with. It’s the emotion that we wouldn’t wish on a single person, but sadly, it’s a universal and human experience.
But then there’s the flip side of grief. It doesn’t always have to be only sad. It’s important to remember that grief is also an outpouring of love for what has gone. It’s a final chance to show the love we carried within us.
In this film, the great Jodie Whittaker does an amazing job of portraying a broken person with unfathomable depths of unexpressed love. Hers is an powerful performance within a worthwhile film.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are considering planting anise garden to appease our new plant overlords. We watched the 2008 film from M. Night Shyamalan, The Happening.
The plants have had enough! They are pissed off and throwing down the gloves. It’s time to kick ass and chew some tree sap… and they’re all out of sap.
It turns out that the trees aren’t too happy about being heartlessly and systematically chopped down and destroyed. Their response? Release a deadly contagion into the air which, when inhaled, makes humans kill themselves. The terror!
Never fear, though. When all seems lost and hope is nowhere to be found, we as a people can turn to Earth’s greatest hero: the only, the only Mark freaking Wahlberg.
In this month’s B-movie episode, we’ll get to the bottom of this famously iffy film. Will we deem it brilliant, a flunder (that’s a fun blunder), or the dreaded blunder? Enjoy finding out!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean have two all expenses paid tickets to the center of the freaking Earth. We watched the 2003 film from Jon Ariel, The Core.
Sure, science has given us many things: amazing medical advancements, technological marvels that feel like magic, and a sparkling sense of wonder in many people.
Do you know what science has never given us? A way to tunnel down into the core of the planet we live on and nuke the hell out of it until the damn thing starts spinning again, thus averting certain apocalyptic doom.
Where were there, science? Taking a day off and lying around on the couch all day? Being a lazy sack of garbage and not realizing your full potential?
The Core has given us all a wonderful gift. After watching this movie, you’ll be able to imagine things that, apparently, just aren’t viable endeavors. The current score is: You - 1, Science - 0.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are sucking on bottled air while trying to save the trees. We’re talking about the 2012 film from Kyle Bald and Chris Renaud, The Lorax.
In a world without trees, without breathable air, without the luxuries of a natural life, there lives a community of people in a city that’s both large and curiously small at the same time. This city is called Thneedville. You read that right.
A boy likes a girl. This girl dreams of seeing a real life tree at least once in her life. The boy now has a mission. He will risk his life to accomplish it.
He meets a curious character named the Once-ler in a barren wasteland. This mustachioed person tells him a grand tale of terrible misdeeds and an eccentric creature called the Lorax.
Will the boy get the girl? Will the Once-ler atone for his sins? What the heck is a Lorax? Enjoy the episode to learn all this and more!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are coming face to face with the reality that we may not be who we think we are. We’re talking about the 2013 film from Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion.
Has there ever been a prettier post-apocalyptic film than this one? We think not, and it’s surely one of the reasons why we chose it to kick off our month of Earth-themed films.
Oblivion is an interesting one, though. The visual dichotomy is stark and inescapable. You’ve got one pristine world living above the clouds and another grimy one living in underground bunkers. Multiple worlds, multiple lives.
These differences are reflected in the main character, Jack. I won’t spoil any plot points here (the audio of this episode will do that well enough), but I will say that there’s quite the surprise in store for you.

March 27, 2023 Slither - Grant Grant Went Boom Boom

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to figure out if the tentacles growing out of our chests are all that noticeable. We’re talking about the James Gunn film from 2006, Slither.
Today, we’re kicking ass and trying not to become a gross-looking, alien-infected zombie monsters… and we’re all out of trying not to become gross-looking, alien-infected zombie monsters.
After watching this film, the first one that made me seriously need to consider if I’ll be throwing up while watching it, I’m all in on the alien zombie prepping life. I’ll be building an underground bunker and I’ve made several orders from a dodgy-looking army police surplus store.
When I’m ready to venture out into the world after the worst of the alien apocalypse has died down, I’ll be saving what’s left with expert deployments of high-caliber rounds, gallons of flamethrower fuel, and badass nunchakus.
If you’re still alive after all the messiness has gone down, come and find me. We’ll take back this world together!

March 20, 2023 Hacksaw Ridge - Help Me Get One More

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are objecting to firing guns, but are not objecting to saving lives. We’re talking about the Mel Gibson film from 2016, Hacksaw Ridge.
If you’re anything like me, then you may not know a single thing about the courageous and fascinating person named Desmond Doss. Also, if you are indeed like me, then you’re going to want to know a heck of a lot more about him after watching this film.
He’s one of the more interesting people to have fought in World War II. Here’s someone who felt the call to enlist and serve in the war effort. However, he was a conscientious objector and refused to kill anybody. He wanted to be a combat medic and save lives.
Quite the conflict, right? Doss didn’t think so, however, and he saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. It turns out that fighting in a war doesn’t necessarily require fighting.
For his efforts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the Armed Forces. This film does an admirable job of dramatizing his story. Enjoy the episode and I encourage you to read more about the real Desmond Doss afterwards.
