    Celebrating Canada’s birthday

It’s almost here! Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations have been going on all year long, but July 1st is now only a week away and we are sure your family and friends are planning activities to celebrate. It looks like Ottawa is going to be one hoppin’ city for the big day.

This week on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the hosts look at dozens of stereotypical and not-so-stereotypical ways you can celebrate Canada’s birthday. If you are eating poutine,  Kraft Dinner, Beavertails, or a Jos Louis or visiting museums, the Thousand Islands, Parliament Hill or Canadian tire, or you are throwing a 150 Party – whatever you do – Dave and Reb want to encourage you to do it with family and friends and community.

And celebrating doesn’t always need to be expensive. Pack a picnic, or share your meals. Find a Groupon, or go to the library and order museum passes to help with costs. Sometimes it just takes creativity and planning. You don’t just need to celebrate on one day either. You can plan outings and activities all year long.

From everyone at “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” and the family at More Than Enough Financial Fitness, “Happy Canada Day” and enjoy your celebrations!

Here’s the link that Dave and Reb reference in today’s show: http://www.theloop.ca/sponsoredpost/150-awesome-and-affordable-ways-to-celebrate-canadas-150th/

Now take a listen to the show, to get some fresh ideas for the big day!

  • Making Vacations “Holy” Days

Vacations that make space for God

Dave and Reb talk with Ray Borg from Compass Canada about how to experience a vacation as a time set apart, not only with family, but with the Lord.

In the days of the Old Testament, the Lord commanded Israel to set aside a portion of their provision so they could gather with their communities at the place God chose as His holy dwelling. The purpose was worship and thanksgiving. In Deuteronomy 14:26, God says “use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice.”

While we may not think of our “vacations” as holy days, maybe a better word for our times of rest and travel should be “holidays” says Dave van Noppen, financial coach and show host. “We need to seriously consider the value of taking time set apart with and for God, not just for ourselves.”

Whether you stay home and take time from work, or whether you travel abroad, your goals can be the same. Take time during this “away” time to focus on God, celebrating, worshipping, feasting, giving gratitude, praying and singing. Dave and Reb assure you, that you will come home more refreshed and filled with strength.

Join Dave and Reb as they unpack these ideas with Ray on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.”

    University life and money

Dave and Reb continue the conversation this week with their daughter Mercedes as they talk about living the university life and what that means for stress and anxiety levels as students live off loans and grants, while working part-time jobs.

Mercedes gives recommendations about how to look after yourself financially as a student, paying yourself and budgeting specific amounts to live off of every month. She also talks about making sure you know what is coming in and out of your bank account every week, so you are aware of where you are at financially.

Together, they also look at the importance of being accountable to a trusted parent or friend. According to Mercedes, It is an important part of your post-secondary education to share your heart and financial journey, especially if money is limited and you find yourself in a tight spot.

Listen to this week’s show to hear these thoughts and much more.

    Train up a child

Mercedes van Noppen, More Than Enough social media director and daughter of Dave and Reb, talks to parents and peers this week on the radio show about creating an understanding financial environment for money conversations in their homes.

As a Generation Z child and university student in Canada’s capital city, Mercedes says that she sees her peers developing a different set of priorities than generations before them. Mercedes believes that the end goal isn’t about getting a house, and a nice savings and retirement fund, but is about living for the experiences and purpose that can be found in the “shrinking” global community.

Dave and Reb talk with Mercedes about the importance of communicating these differences with parents and family, to create understanding and a place for safe financial conversations. When parents do this, Mercedes believes they are fulfilling the verse found in Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way she should go, and when she is old, she won’t depart from it.

Tune in to hear their conversation.

    Pulling into the slow lane

After their three part series on fear and finances, Dave and Reb talk together about a subject related to fear: financial fatigue.

In our world of fast-paced living, sometimes we need to get out of the passing lane into the slow lane. We can discover that this kind of living only leaves us tired out and running, as well as more and more tired of taking care of ourselves, our relationships and our finances.

One of the tell-tale signs of financial fatigue is avoidance. We just don’t have the brain capacity or desire to continue on our path of financial vigilance. Dave says this can lead to trouble down the road and we really need the help of others if we find ourselves feeling this way.

“In these cases, maybe it’s a good idea to turn over the finances to your spouse for a few weeks, or seek out a coach, accountability partner, or a good friend who can help you,” he says.

Tune in to Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb to learn about the warning signs and the antidotes that can help you.

Community in the midst of fear

    Community. Fellowship. Living in relationship.

Dave and Reb talk with Ray Borg from Compass Canada this week about how these three things help combat fear in our financial journey. Gathering with others to talk about our own financial journeys can be scary, but once we are part of a safe group of people, it can help liberate us into more and more financial freedom.

“It provides that safe environment where people can take off the masks they wear,” Borg says.

A small group can be a place where people share their fears, experiences, and perceptions of how to manage things. By sharing and risking, and being vulnerable, fear can fade away.

“We are not in an accountable community to point a finger,” Reb adds. “But a place where we realize we all struggle with the same financial issues. Being in community creates a place for creative ideas and perspectives that we can share with one another to help each other on the path to financial fitness.”

Borg also points out that small groups can be a safe environment for couples to put forth their ideas and feelings in front of others, that they couldn’t do just between the two of them. This can bring resolution, as the community walks beside them, encouraging the couple to be honest and forgiving.

To learn more about the benefits of community and releasing fear, listen to their discussion.

    Fear in finances

Fear can keep us floating on the financial waters of anxiety, stress, passivity and lack of peace. This week Ellel Canada Regional Director Kent Bandy talks with Dave and Reb about what fear looks like in our financial journeys, and the importance of applying God’s love to these areas of trouble.

According to Bandy, fear is a symptom of not receiving the security and love of God, and can lead us to live a life of passivity where we avoid the decisions and issues that are necessary for a healthy financial journey.

Together they look at the importance of remembering that God is with us, is for us, and is a good Father who wants to set us free, not further enslave us. He reveals areas of fear in our lives to bring healing to us, as well as strengthen our relationship with Him.

“Giving to God what is God’s”

Jesus spoke about money and possessions many times when He walked the earth. He also answered questions about paying taxes to Caesar.

On this week’s radio show, Dave and Reb talk with More Than Enough Financial coach Bron Vasic about the significance of Christ’s words: “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Together they discover that the words of Jesus really touch on the heart of the matter by throwing light on the importance of allegiance to God.

“Our trust, surrender and obedience is still something Christ cares about as a heart issue today. We are called to give back to our own governments what is owed, but our allegiance must always be to our God who provides the very money we need to pay taxes,” Reb shares.

To hear their discussion on this interesting teaching of Christ, listen to this week’s show.

  • Resurrection Hope

    Resurrection Hope

After talking about the meaning of Good Friday last week, Dave and Reb discuss how the Hope of the Resurrection can refocus our thinking when we are going through financial difficulties.

Scripture says that we are born into a “living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3) Dave shares that often our financial difficulties and challenges distract us from the truth of that Scripture.

“We need to intentionally decide not to let our financial ‘stuff’ distract us from this Resurrection Hope,” he says.

And that is one reason why Dave and Reb’s company More Than Enough Financial Fitness exists. Their vision is to bring “Hope for Today and Freedom for Tomorrow.” One of the ways they do that is by creating a supportive community of accountability so that people understand they are not alone on their journey, and there is always help and encouragement.

Dave says this journey is not easy, but a key to living in Resurrection Hope is choosing hope every day, and finding a community that will speak and encourage hope and freedom in your finances.

Dave and Reb share these encouragements on today’s show, so listen in!

  • Refreshing on Good Friday

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/LTM_04-14-17.mp3

    Times of Refreshing

On this Good Friday morning, Ray Borg of Compass Canada joins Dave and Reb as they look at the significance of Good Friday and how repentance affects our lives, both spiritually and financially.

In Acts 3:19, Peter says to the crowds,  “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” That word “refreshing” means “recovery of breath”. When we repent – changing our minds and turning from our current path to God – we can breathe again. There is a slowing down, a turning, and a new perspective, especially as we turn and make changes in our financial decisions.

    Inhale and exhale.

Sometimes, when we encounter financial struggles, debt and difficult circumstances, we can feel like we are holding our breath without even knowing it. Repentance and turning back to God and His biblical principles for our finances, can give us the breath we need to keep going.

Ray Borg reminds us on the show that the grave suffocates life and breath. But the Lord Jesus Christ did not stay in that suffocated place. The grave could not keep him. The grave took a breath and God brought Christ forth. As Jesus regained His breath and new life, so we recover our breath as we return to God.

Take some time, listen and consider how repentance changes your life.
