A Life Impacted by Gospel Patrons

David Beking from Beking’s Poultry Farm located just outside of Ottawa, joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” this week. But they aren’t just talking eggs.

In fact, they are continuing a conversation that began with Gospel Patrons author John Rinehart over the past two weeks. This book had such an impact on Beking’s life that he changed how he lived. A part of his journey in generosity was becoming a gospel patron of a friend in Africa.

Beking learned that furthering the good news of God’s Kingdom is not simply accomplished through “missionaries” but through people like himself who can provide financial support for those who are sent out. However, he also realized there is much more to being a gospel patron than simply giving money. Personal involvem

ent and relational investment is also a part of the journey.

In this week’s show, Beking shares how God’s Scriptures and the stories from Rinehart’s book continue to impact his walk with God, and how he gives. Tune in and listen.

    Get Gripped!

Whatever grips us, drives us. The key to changing the world is being gripped by eternal principles which inspire us to live beyond our current reality.

Business people and entrepreneurs sometimes feel they only go to work, but John Rinehart wants each of us to recognized our ability and potential to use our jobs to fuel our calling as a gospel patron.

In part two of this series on Gospel Patrons with guest author John Rinehart, Dave and Reb continue a conversation about the ministry of gospel patrons which demonstrates how the church can embrace the concept of a gospel patron even in our modern world.

Each person has the DNA of the God who designed them, a God who is passionate about generosity. At the heart of the impact on every life is giving. The people who have impacted your life the most are those who have given you their time, money, resources and experiences. John Rinehart asks the question “How do we become the kind of people God uses to change the world?” At the heart of his answer is becoming an individual, community and world which is motivated by giving rather than taking.

On his website http://www.gospelpatrons.org/ there are videos, books and other resources outlining modern day gospel patrons and where you can download the pdf version or audio book of Gospel Patrons.

    Becoming a Gospel Patron

Many Christians have heard the names of John Newton, George Whitefield, and William Tyndale. However, not many have heard of the people or financial support behind these names.

In his book Gospel Patrons, John Rinehart unfolds the stories of the men and women who supported these great men of faith so they could fulfill the call of God on their lives. On this week’s “Let’s Talk Money” broadcast, Dave and Reb interview Rinehart to learn of his own story, and his journey to discover the importance of “gospel patrons” in the Kingdom of God.

Rinehart says that a gospel patron is someone who is generously involved and personally engaged in spreading the gospel. (see https://vimeo.com/111071634)

“When God raises up people to proclaim the gospel, he also raises up patrons to support them. They have different gifts and different roles, but they are partners in the same mission,” he says.

Newton, Whitefield and Tyndale each had a gospel patron that not only gave financial support, but spiritual support that included their own involvement in spreading the gospel. For instance, businessman Humphrey Monmouth not only fed and clothed Tyndale while he translated the Bible into English, but he ended up smuggling the Bibles into England as well.

Rinehart shares these stories and more on this week’s show in the hopes that men and women today will become patrons of the gospel of Christ.

    Getting Financially Aware

Dave and Reb draw on God’s Word, and stories from the Lord of the Rings to encourage listeners on their financial journeys in today’s show. Ray Borg from Compass Canada join them and share special verses that have impacted his financial story.

Together they look at how scriptures light the way to encourage us, and keep us in the truth when we are dealing with our day-to-day finances. Psalm 24, Isaiah 55 and Matthew 6 are key verses that encourage us to see that God is our source, that He is the only One that meets our heart needs, and that His Kingdom is one we can seek after.

On our day-to-day journey, God encourages us to remember who we are and who He is, and to look to heaven to find His help in our times of need. Reb says that even when we are sleepless in the night and worried, He is up with us and watching over us.

“Our hope is the resurrection and life of Jesus, and His promises of salvation and redemption run through every story of our lives, including our finances,” she says. “God is our source for everything, not money.

Getting financially aware is key to getting ahold of our money. Starting with Scripture and God’s direction is key, but so also is looking at where our money is going. Tracking money for 30 days is one way to raise financial awareness. And if you don’t know how much interest you are paying, or how much interest you are comfortable paying, researching this part of your finances and debt load is also important.

To hear more of their discussion, tune in to “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” where the hosts and their guests will help you find freedom for today and hope for tomorrow.

    Back to school planning

It is time to start thinking about back to school planning for extra-curriculur expenditures that will inevitably hit you in only a few short weeks.

This week, Dave and Reb draw your attention to the needs of this time of year with back-to-school shopping, sports activities and other school needs. Dave suggests taking a step back this month, and taking a broader look at your extra expenses, not just for this fall but for the whole year.

“September can be a stressful time of year for some families,” Dave says. “Even though we know the expenses are coming we haven’t made a plan for them, or even looked at whether or not we want to continue doing what we have done in the past.”

To help on this journey, Dave and Reb talk about taking a “bird’s-eye view” of each month of the year, and what “extra” expenses are involved in each month. This will help in the overall understanding of where money is going and what is really important to you as a family.

To help you tackle this task, and understand the “hows” and “whys” behind it, take a listen to the show and get started!

The Why and How of Debt: Debt is not an Option

    Debt is not an option.

On this week’s radio show, Dave and Reb look at what debt really is, according to the Word of God. Dave says debt is not a sin, but God clearly tells us it is a burden, and we should avoid it at all costs.

In fact, God says in Proverbs 6 that we should flee from it, like a like a deer from the hunter and a bird from the trapper. He also tells us in the New Testament that we should owe no one anything, but love. Sometimes our financial debt, or should I say “often” our financial debt, keeps us from loving our neighbour. We are consumed by worry and the weight of it, so we don’t see the needs around us. Our hands are tied behind our backs, and we cannot help provide for our neighbour because of our debt.

God doesn’t want us to live with that burden, and he wants us to love others and help those in need. Walking financially free relieves us of that stress and worry, but it also releases us to freely give away what God provides.

Listen to this show that concludes the four-part series on “The Why and How of Debt”.

  • Filling the Void

The Why and How of Debt: Filling the Void

The search for happiness. The search for fulfillment. Whatever you want to call it, we all pursue something to bring satisfaction, long life and fulfillment to our journey here on earth. The messaging of the world’s system tries to convince us every day that we need more stuff or more vacations to fill the void. This pursuit might lead us into debt if we are not careful.

On “Let’s Talk Money” this week, Dave and Reb talk with Compass Canada’s Ray Borg. Together, they dig into these issues, alongside Psalm 34 which tells us to “taste and see the Lord is good”. God tells us in His Word that pursuing and seeking peace, refraining from evil and seeking after Him are all a part of finding true fulfillment and life itself.

As Pastor Ray says, that isn’t always an easy pursuit when we are constantly distracted: “It can be a challenge continually having to choose between what can lead us away from God, and what can lead us to God.”

Rebecca adds that God is faithful in always leading us back to Himself because He knows what we are created to be: “In His presence we can uncover what we have forgotten about who we are and about who He is, and that leads to fulfillment, and ultimately away from debt.”

This week’s program is part three of the four-week series called the “Why and How of Debt”. Tune in and discover more about filling the void in your life with the love of God.

  • Coveting and Contentment

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/LTM_07-14-17.mp3

The Why and How of Debt: Contentment and Coveting

In the second show of the series, Dave and Reb talk about coveting and contentment and the journey from a heart of complaint to a heart of gratitude. Coveting, envy and jealousy often lead us into financial trouble and debt because we will pursue what others have, even when we don’t have the money.

“God commands us not to covet,” Reb says during the show. “And coveting is the one commandment of the 10, given to Moses and the people of Israel, that deals with heart and attitude issues. Coveting leads to breaking some of the other ten, like stealing, adultery, murder and perjury. Coveting can lead to such trouble.”

Contentment is the antidote but must be pursued through intentional gratitude and intentional time with God, fostering a relationship with Him. In Hebrews 13:5, God tells us to keep our lives free from the love of money. He also says that we can be content with what we have because He, Himself has promised that He won’t leave us or forsake us.

“The beautiful part to this is that we find contentment in God Himself,” Dave says. “He is the answer to our coveting, envy and jealousy problems. It is all about His presence.”

Dave and Reb talk about these heart issues, along with some practical tips to help you deal with these issues in your lives. Take a listen.

  • The Why and How of Debt Pt.1

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/LTM_07-07-17.mp3

The Why and How of Debt

Dave and Reb start a month-long conversation about why we get into debt and how we can deal with our hearts as we tackle getting out of debt.

This week’s topic looks at our appetites and longings, and the things we fill our lives with to satisfy those appetites and longings. Everything from food to furniture, cars to vacations, may be a part of the list of possessions and experiences we pursue, even if we don’t have the money. In God’s Word, we are taught that “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” don’t come from God. He warns us not to love the world or anything in the world. (See 1 John 2)

Heeding this warning, Dave and Reb try to unpack the effects of feeding our appetites with temporal things, like debt and the continuing pursuit of pleasure. While none of these “things” in and of themselves is wrong, if we use them to satisfy the struggles of our heart, then we need to stop and consider what we are doing.

Debt can be the greatest outcome of fulfilling these appetites, Dave says. “I encourage everyone to take time with God and to truly face what is going on in their hearts and their bank accounts.”

Take a listen to this first show of Dave and Reb’s series, “The Why and How of Debt”.

  • Canada Day with Guest MP David Sweet

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/LTM_06-30-17.mp3

    Happy Canada Day!

This week Conservative MP and National Caucus Chair David Sweet joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to talk about God’s faithfulness to Canada as we celebrate her 150th birthday. Their conversation also touches on the Canadian family, and the financial challenges they are facing.

While Sweet has “grave concerns” around Alberta and Canada’s energy sector, the personal debt of Canadians, and the challenges of global and economic competitiveness, he also has a lot of hope for Canada.

“I just have great faith in the freedom we enjoy and the innovation, and just the smarts that we have in the Canadian population.” he told Dave and Reb.

“I have great faith in Canadians. The hardworking average Canadians are in families that are working hard trying to be innovative, thinking of good and new ideas to do things. We have all kinds of examples in the constituencies I represent, where people have come up with great ideas, taking them from the research bench to the shop floor, and have created businesses that years ago weren’t even around,” Sweet said.

To hear more of their discussion, and to hear Sweet’s perspective on where we stand, and where we are headed, tune into this week’s show.
