  • Christmas Joy with Rev. Ray and Arlene Borg!

It’s almost Christmas, and Dave and Reb invite their dear friends Rev. Ray Borg and his wife Arlene to share their favourite Christmas Scripture verses and memories on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. They even manage to talk about money – just a little bit!

The four friends share verses from the book of Hebrews and Isaiah, as well as 2 Corinthians. Listeners might be surprised that many of their favourites speak to why He came to earth as a man, and aren’t about the birth story.

“The season is about so much more than Jesus coming as a baby,” Reb says. “We can’t fully celebrate his birth without being grateful for His suffering, death, and His resurrection, and reflecting on those truths as we consider the baby in a manger.”

Join Dave and Reb’s conversation with their friends, as they reflect on the importance of Jesus’ coming, and why He came: for the joy set before Him! Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. To order Reb’s e-book, audio book, or soft-cover copy of Cultivating Trust: Finding God’s Hope and Freedom for Your Finances, go to www.morethanenoughbooks.com. • Released to Give

At this time of year, many of us are receiving requests for donations from charities often in the form of gift catalogues as options for gift giving. For many of us, there are more requests than money and this can be disheartening. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts encourage listeners to follow in the footsteps of God, to look to Him, and to plan their giving for 2023, aligning with God’s own generous heart.

“Giving is an attitude of generosity, the very DNA of God in us,” Dave says. “And this time of year is a perfect time to sit down with your family and talk about where you want to give in the year to come.”

Dave and Reb provide practical advice on making a giving plan and sticking with it, just as God’s word encourages us to do. As it says in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Join their conversation and tune in to hear Dave and Reb on today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. • Where’s your Focus?

Today’s episode reflects on what stress and worry teach us, and how we can trust God more deeply.

What is it like for you going to the grocery store these days? Is there a certain amount of stress you carry over rising prices? On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts discuss how a change in mindset and a focus on who God is, can make all the difference. With a mix of scriptures, they encourage listeners to trust God, and learn what it means to rely on God for daily sustenance.

“When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert, he was focused on His Father and knew how to answer the temptations,” Dave says. “There he taught us that the Word of God is sufficient for our souls and our bodies.”

Today’s show is the second of two parts where Dave and Reb help listeners navigate this new form of currency in the digital world.

As a financial advisor, Bold stresses that investing in cryptocurrency is not easy, and much research needs to be done. He also encourages people only to invest what they can afford to lose, as there continues to be so much to learn in this type of investing. As he explains, you don’t need to invest in one entire Bitcoin, but it can be purchased in percentages.

  • Exploring Cryptocurrency with Bold Kere, Part I

Dave and Reb welcome Ottawa financial advisor Bold Kere to today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money”, as they uncover the sometimes difficult and mysterious topic of cryptocurrency. Today’s show is the first of two parts where they define and explain this new form of currency in the digital world.

Today’s discussion focuses on the “five Ws” of the crypto world, including understanding crypto’s most popular token – Bitcoin.

As Bold explains, crypto tokens are not usually used in daily financial transactions, but are a form of financial investment for the future. Today, Bitcoin is worth around $45,000 USD.

To learn more about crypto currency, tune in to today’s podcast. If you want to experience a more in depth discussion, Bold recommends a course by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler. “In the course, he dives into the history and technology behind Bitcoin and others, and how it could open up a whole new world of possibilities beyond the financial aspects, just like the internet has opened up a new world reality,” Bold says. “He openly states he is neutral on Bitcoin, and is currently looking at ways to protect investors from scams and fraud.”

  • The Spiritual Hierarchy of Giving

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/LTM_12-08-17.mp3

    The Hierarchy of Spiritual Giving

When we consider giving to charity or tithing to the church, we can naturally put giving on a graded-scale: some giving, we silently decide, is more appropriate, more important or simply of “better value” in the eyes of God than others.

But on this week’s radio show, Dave and Reb, along with financial advisor Tim Jenkins, debunk this idea and look to the heart of generosity and giving and what it means to give, and be a “giver”.

“Sometimes we can feel self-righteous when it comes to our giving,” Dave says. “But we need to be careful.”

The greatest question around giving is not about a percentage, but rather “Father, what do you want me to do with Your money?” This question involves relationship with God on an intimate daily basis, and also involves our understanding of Biblical Stewardship and how we are managers of God’s resources.

“When we start to understand giving from that perspective – that God knows how he wants to give and share what He has – we will stop ‘rating’ or giving a hierarchy to spiritual giving,” Reb says.

Tim reminds us on the show that the benefits of not living under this hierarchy of giving, but living with an understanding of Biblical Stewardship, allows us:

    greater intimacy with God,
a life of growing faith and dependence on God,
and the freedom and enjoyment of giving His resources, thus celebrating with God what He is doing and wants to do in the lives of others.

Tune in to hear this interesting discussion.

  • Getting Ready for Tax Time: Yes, tax time!

Getting Ready for Tax Time with Bron Vasic!

Bron Vasic, entrepreneurial coach and tax specialist at More Than Enough Financial Fitness, joins Dave and Reb in talking about the upcoming income tax season for 2018.

Many people aren’t comfortable talking about taxes, but together these financial coaches tackle practical tools that can be used to take the fear out of the tax season. Many people don’t file their taxes, even though it is something required by the Canadian government.

Dave and Bron agree there are many reasons people won’t prepare their income taxes in the spring, among them are fear, lack of knowledge, and the simple inability or desire to look at their personal finances.

There are tools however that can help, and some of them are quite simple. Bron reminds listeners they can start by opening their Canada Revenue Agency mail. It is easy and important to do.

He also suggests putting all tax receipts in one place and in one envelope, so that you are not scrambling every spring during tax time. Making sure you are educated about the changes in tax requirements is also important. To learn how to walk away from your fears regarding the “tax man”, tune in.

  • Black Friday and Spending Plans

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/LTM_11-24-17.mp3

    Black Friday

It is that time of year again, when American Thanksgiving has led us into Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping and sales. Dave and Reb talk about “planning what you spend and spending what you plan” on this week’s podcast.

“It is really important to make a list and stick with it, especially on a day when marketing for all kinds of goods is so bold and enticing,” Dave says.

It is also important to remember that although you may think you are the one searching and hunting for good deals, the retail industry is designed to hunt you and get you to spend money you weren’t planning to spend.

Every year, the National Retail Federation in the United States, collects the statistics on the sales and outcomes of this big shopping weekend. Every year since 2002, the amount of money spent per shopper has increased. The only year there was a 4.6 percent decrease was the year of the 2008 recession. Last year, the NRF calculated an average spending amount of $935 per shopper. So this spending season, is no small matter. In Canada, Black Friday spending started to gain momentum in 2009. Today this Black Friday weekend is simply a part of Canada’s greater Christmas season spending.

In terms of shopping and spending, Dave also says that asking forgiveness after an unplanned purchase, instead of talking about it beforehand, is not a good idea.

“You know that saying, ‘just ask forgiveness after, instead of permission beforehand’? In terms of finances and this spending season, that is definitely not a good idea,” Dave says. “Talk about your plan, decide what is important and stick to it. It will save you stress later.”

Although sticking to a plan is not always easy, it is an important part of living a debt-free lifestyle. To hear the conversation, tune-in.

  • Sharing the Simplicity with Guest Ray Borg

    https://morethanenough.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/LTM_11-17-17.mp3

    Ray’s Journey of Simplicity

Simplifying our lives is not always an easy task. Some of us find ourselves doing it voluntarily as we downsize or get rid of the possessions that fill our homes. But sometimes the journey to simplicity and minimalizing is part of outside circumstances, and is thrust upon us.

On “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” this week, Ray Borg, executive director of Compass Canada, shares a journey he and his wife Arlene walked when he left his job and they lived off a part-time salary.

In that 14-month season, they learned to draw even closer to the Lord and rely on Him as their source. They had to look at their spending plan, and decided to have a season of “no spending”. They gave up many things, including cable and their subscription to their Saturday morning newspaper, which they really loved.

Ray says there were a lot of hard choices to make from big things to small, but they learned patience and simplicity. They learned to communicate about money in ways they had never done before, and the more they did so, the more unity grew in their marriage.

“In these seasons it is important to ask the Lord what it is we are to learn,” Ray says, and adds that when we do, we experience God and intimacy with Him in ways we never imagined.

To hear Ray and Arlene’s encouraging story, listen in.
