  • JANUARY 8, DAY 8

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

    • The story of Scripture traces the genealogies through Abraham’s three wives. Remember, God is telling His story to the Hebrews who have just come out of their slavery in Egypt. He wants them to know who He is, and He desires that they understand who they are. He is Creator. He promised a Seed to Eve who would one day remove the results of sin forever. He entered into covenant with Abraham to fulfill this promise for every family on the earth. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is their God, and they are His people.
    • The story of the Seed of Promise continues with details about Jacob and Esau. God tells this story in great detail because of its worldview-shaping importance both for the Hebrews in the wilderness and all generations after.

    • JANUARY 7, DAY 7

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

      • God provides for Hagar and Ishmael but establishes that Isaac will inherit the promise of the Seed.
      • For twenty-five years in the land of Promise, God trained Abraham and Sarah to walk by faith. God needs Abraham to be ready to obey when He commands him to place his only son on the altar of atonement.
      • Once the role of the firstborn son is established and the covenant of the seed of Promise is established, God provides a bride for Isaac.

      • JANUARY 6, DAY 6

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

        • God teaches Sarah to resist telling Him what is possible and what is not.
        • His judgment on Sodom, Gomorrah, and the cities of the plains comes ten generations after the flood. God’s action at Babel allows Him to execute judgment in isolated places until the time of the final judgment.
        • Abraham is allowed to participate through intercessory prayer in God’s actions.
        • Lot’s story shows the futility of living by fear rather than faith.

        • JANUARY 5, DAY 5

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

          • Abram has acted by faith.
            • After rescuing Lot from the kings who captured him and recovering all of the wealth that was taken in the war...
            • Abram has declared that Creator God alone is his King.
            • He has refused to keep any of the possessions that belong to the king of Sodom.
            • Now God responds to Abram's faith obedience by confirming:
              • Abram, who is still learning how to walk by faith and not by sight, has 3 questions for God in today's reading:
                • How are you going to keep your promise to me? I don't have a son, and my servant is currently the heir of my household.
                • How will I know that you are going to give my descendants the land, since I will be dead when you fulfill this promise?
                • Once Ishmael is born, Abram asks God to simply fulfill His promise through Ishmael...because...well...after all...Abram is 100 years old.
                • The way God responds to Abram's questions teaches us that God is not afraid of our questions or frustrated with our confusion when what we see with our eyes doesn't match up with what He has said, but rather God desires that we order our lives according to what He has said instead of reacting to our circumstance.
                  • As God responds to Abram's struggle to understand how God will make him a great nation even though he still has no offspring, God provides pictures of His promises, speaks future things, and He acts to define the covenant to which God is obligating Himself.
                    • This pictures, future things, and covenant ceremonies reveal God's character, the nature of our faith, and the consequences of our refusal to wait on Him.
                    • God is faithful, He picks up the broken pieces of our lives, and He patiently trains us so that we learn to trust Him in all things.
                      • Parents, listen to this before you share it with your children...I'll be careful in how I word things, but today's content might be difficult for unready ears!
                      • Genesis 15:1 (NLT) “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.” Let’s dive into today’s reading!

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

                        • God designed mankind in His image to live in a faith relationship with Him according to His design.
                          • God created this faith relationship by:
                            • Giving instructions to obey
                            • Promises to believe
                            • And boundaries to trust
                            • Even though God had commanded Noah to "be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth,"
                              • And although Noah would have passed this instruction on to the next generations
                              • Although God provided a promise to never destroy the earth by flood again
                                • He established a picture of this promise by placing a rainbow in the sky at the conclusion of every rainfall
                                • The people decide to take on the greatest flood insurance project in human history.
                                  • 10 generations from Noah, God calls Abraham out of a family of idol worshipers to learn to walk with Him by faith.
                                    • Abraham's story teaches us that faith is a process. Scripture does not sanitize his story so we get to see how God responds to him when he obeys by faith and when he schemes according to his own desires.
                                      • AND ...we are introduced to our great High Priest...He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords

                                      • JANUARY 3, DAY 3

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

                                        • The flood story reveals God’s righteousness and wrath. He acts to make Himself known. God desires that His image-bearers understand His character, their need for redemption and His faithfulness to both forgive those who walk by faith and punish all wickedness.
                                        • God defines for Noah all that He is doing. He is destroying every living thing that breathes, but at the same time, He is promising to confirm His covenant with Noah, his sons, and every surviving being. God will give mankind another promise and picture. In the Garden, God promised redemption. In the flood, God points to the reality of a future sweeping and final judgment. The sign of the covenant—the rainbow—will remind all people of God’s act of righteousness and wrath. It will also demonstrate to all people that God is actively withholding this kind of sweeping judgment until some day in the future.
                                        • The rainbow puts all people on notice. The reality of future judgment is sure, but so is the reality of future redemption. God will one day remove all wickedness from the earth, and He will save a people of faith.
                                        • God is administering the eras to bring about the redemption He designed and planned before the foundations of the earth. As God tells His story to the newly liberated Hebrews in the wilderness, He wants them to think rightly about Him, themselves, and the people who currently live in the land He promised them—the Canaanites.

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

                                          • Two groups of people form: those who call on the name of the Lord and those who live according to their own pleasures.
                                          • In the second generation, Abel and Cain’s story teaches us that God’s terms for salvation are non-negotiable. Understanding the story of the Bible helps us interpret why God accepts Abel’s offering while rejecting Cain’s.
                                          • The Story of the Bible traces Seth and Cain’s lineages, the rapid spread of sin throughout the earth, and the full manifestation of man’s depravity—sexual immorality and violence.
                                          • God acts to administer the fulfillment of His redemptive plan. He acts in righteousness and in wrath.

                                          • JANUARY 1, DAY 1

In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

                                            • God redeemed the Hebrews from their slavery in Egypt. Now in the wilderness after experiencing God’s authority and power over the most powerful nation on the earth and its false gods, God wants His covenant people to know His character. As the story of Scripture is told from the beginning, God desires to deprogram His people from all they learned in Egypt. He tells them the story of redemptive history that brings them to Mount Sinai.
                                            • God makes Himself known. He wants all image-bearers to know His character. He also wants all people to know our brokenness. Although we are made in His image so that we may know Him and live in relationship with Him, mankind from the beginning rejected His kingship.
                                            • God desires to be known as Creator. Only Creator God may command things that do not exist to exist. Only Creator God may possess preeminent authority, power, and wisdom.
                                            • As Creator, God desires all image-bearers to know His redemptive work. Paul said to the church in Ephesus:
                                            • Ephesians 1:4 (NLT)

4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

                                              • The beginning of the story teaches us to believe rightly about God and ourselves. Our redemption was designed and planned before anything was made. For the Hebrews at Mt. Sinai, the story of the beginning reveals a good God who’s word is true—a God who has been administering the eras in order to redeem the brokenness that resulted from man’s sin. For us today, the story of the beginning is glorious in light of the end of the story, which God has made known in Christ.
