God encounters Jacob in a dream and reaffirms the promises he made to his parents. As a result, Jacob can journey with new purpose and direction.

Isaac, now old in age, sought to give his blessing to the next generation. Despite the messiness of the family, God is at work to make good on those promises.

With the birth of Isaac's twins, God chooses to pass down his promises through Jacob and not Esau.

God tests Abraham to see what he puts his trust in: God himself, or his blessings.

God declares his promises to Abram and Sarai giving them both new names and a visible sign of what's to come.

God delivers a reminder of his foundational promise to Abram . . . but Abram has questions. God responds to Abram with a visible sign and Abram believes.

In the conclusion to John's letter he reminds the Christian community of God's witness and call to obedience in Jesus Christ.
