Do you know what the weather is like on Mars today? Writing as if to space explorers who are going to travel throughout our solar system, author Kelly Kizer Whitt reports what the Solar Weather Channel says about the sun, speedy Mercury, sulfuric Venus, our own Earth, rust-colored Mars, huge Jupiter, ringed Saturn, Saturn's largest moon Titan, calm Uranus, windy Neptune, and dwarf planet Pluto, with interesting facts about each of them. I do wish that there was some information on the asteroids. But one planet is called the Goldilocks planet--you know, like Little Bear's porridge, not too hot, not too cold, but just right. Can you guess which one it is?

Most kids always enjoy reading about "outer space." Some planets have below-freezing temperatures, others have scorching heat, and a few have storms bigger than the planet Earth. Budding astronomers can find out which ones have what while chuckling at the humorous drawings by illustrator Laurie Allen Klein. Solar System Forecast

My Review: Time for the solar system forecast. If you plan to leave the house today please note that the solar system forecast hot, cold, windy, calm, rainy, dry, cloudy and clear weather. And because Mercury is close to the Sun it will get up to 800 degree weather. It's going to be a windy day in Neptune as winds goes up to 1,500 miles per hour. While on Earth where it's cold at the poles and warm at the equator, avoid the western Atlantic Ocean today where a hurricane is raging. And that's today's solar system forecast by green-skinned TV weather alien.

This is a fun and interesting learning picture book for children. Read about the solar system compare and contract, learn about the heat and the light from the Sun and many more. I highly recommend this book for classroom teaching.

This is a humorous story in rhyme that will delight any youngster who's in search of that perfect pet ...

Every girl and boy wants a pet, but sometimes the answer is "no, no, no!" One day the answer was "yes," but just what kind of a pet would do? There were all kinds of animals at the pet store, including that slithering snake, the terrifying tarantula, and even a rascally looking rat. Just what kind of pet would do? "The kingdom Animalia / is where I'd start my search ... / a bear, a slug, a killer whale, / a catfish, or a perch." It didn't look like there would be a perfect pet in that bunch so it was off to think about another group. No invertebrates in Mom's house!

Perhaps a crocodile, an anteater, or maybe, just maybe, that cobra. They all were very, very interesting and a croc in the tub would be awesome. "No reptiles or -- amphibians; / they are too hard to scrub. / You just can't bathe a crocodile-- / it won't fit in our tub." Just what kind of pet would do? This is a humorous story in rhyme that will delight any youngster who's in search of that perfect pet. The verse definitely has charm and the flow of the story is perfect as animal classification is covered as a child imaginative thinks about the "perfect pet." Naturally, a child's notion of the perfect pet can greatly differ from one looked at from an adult perspective. The full-color, full-page illustrations are vibrant and lend a lot to the pet-appeal of the story. Newly independent readers can tackle this beginning nonfiction book with a bit of assistance with unusual terms such as "Canis lupus familiaris." In the back of the book are several activities, including some that can be downloaded and printed from the publisher's website. This would be an excellent book to read and discuss in the homeschool or classroom setting.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! The story is wonderful, and expertly written. It is a treat to read out loud as it flows easily and rhythmically, and is truly a fun read for both the reader and listening audience. (Reminiscent of Dr. Seuss......however, it makes sense! LOL!!) It is engaging in it's storyline, and a masterpiece in the artistry of the illustrations. Don't hesitate to purchase this book. It will become a favorite and have you, like me, looking for the next Oskar & Klaus adventure.

I can't say enough good things about this book. The story is an adventure, lessons are learned, and there is a generous helping of humor involved. Also, it's especially touching that one of the cats is blind, but, the book doesn't make a big deal about it. Also, it helps alleviate children's fears of bigfoot while they're out camping. I've bought this for several children, and it's been a huge hit every time.

Interesting non-fiction read.

A WONDERUL AND INTERESTING LEANING TOOL...A PLEASURE TO READ AND VIEW.

Author Patti R. Zelch and artist Connie McLennan have brought us another wonderful learning tool through Sylvan Dell Publishing. As with all the books offered by this company, this one is something rather special.

This work begins with a family preparing for a hurricane which will arrive shortly. As the family makes all the necessary preparations and precautions, the little boy of the family looks into a tree and wonders, "what do wild animals do before and during a hurricane?" And so our story really starts.

The book now take a look at twelve different animals; fish, lobsters, crocodiles, dolphins, manatees, butterflies, sharks, birds and rabbits, and briefly tells us just what preparations these creatures who surround us take when a big storm is about to hit. Over and over again the author stresses that the animals "know," and indeed, those of you that are familiar with the wildlife in your local area will understand perfectly what the author is talking about. The animals most certainly do know when a storm is about to hit or when the weather is in for a drastic change.

The story text in this work is straight forward and is geared toward the 4 through 9 year old age group. There is plenty in the story that will keep a child's interest and as a matter of fact should bring on a plethora of questions as you read! (Better do your homework). The words the author has chosen are easily read by this age group but the author has thrown vocabulary building words in here and there such as "instinctively," "antennae," and more. Each word could be used to develop a story within a story if the reader or teacher chooses to do so. This is something I like.

The illustrator, Connie McLennan has given us some amazing paintings of creatures in their natural habitat. I took a close look at the various animals represented here and could find absolutely nothing anatomically incorrect. The artist has use bold lines and colors yet has kept the integrity of the creature she has drawn along with a beautiful background in each and every frame. The text goes perfectly with the illustrations, all of which are in a double page format.

The last seven pages of this book are for the parent or teacher. We are given a rather close-up look at just what a hurricane is, it seasons, what cyclones, tropical cyclones and typhoons are. The designated strength number given to storms at different stages is discussed at length and there is a very nice summation of actions that need to be taken by us humans when a storm approaches. The author then goes on to discuss in more detail each of the critters covered in the book and gives a short discussion on animal behavior during storms.

This entire work is quite well researched by both author and artist.

A young couple falls in love and gets married. The Mother gets pregnant and gives birth to triplets! Since each character is composed of a geometrically shaped torso, what shapes will the three triplets become? Since the people in the book are named for the shape of their torso, what names can be given to the three new babies?

This is the beginning of a fun adventure, trying to determine the shapes of the three babies and appropriate names. It's filled with relatives we can all relate to, the feeling of adventure, and family values we all love and desire. This is a well-crafted wholesome story of a loving family, including a well revered and respected extended family of multiple generations. This entire family participates in problem solving in regard to the new family additions. They even speak of family traditions through the use of positive and respectful references to previous generations. Children will be relating Aunt Hexagon to their own aunts and Grandpa Rectangle to their own Grandpa.

The book is also like getting three books in one and loving each. It's a great first book on the values, respect, and structure garnered by multi-generation families. It teaches mathematical geometric shapes to young children without really disclosing to the child that math learning is going on. It's illustrations provide a refreshing display of contemporary art and background colors and shapes, while providing the necessary simplicity of the characters in 2D. The 2D look succeeds in having the shapes pop off the page and into the imaginations of the reader. The characters are even seen as paper-doll-like, making children want to do many of the fun teacher activities in the back of the book and free on the publisher's Website. The unique look brings the book down to the level of the reader's age group in an adventurous and wholesome way. Oddly enough, the simplicity and 2D scheme also puts forth a feeling of fun, motivates the reading of the book, and brings us into a world children will want to be part of.

The geometric shapes are used to teach children the shape types themselves, but this book is more than that. At first glance, it looks like a math book teaching how to recall and memorize geometric shapes. Make no mistake, it does that very well. However, it also shows how the elements of the geometric shapes relate to one another, and what shapes can become when joined with other shapes. This develops learning of math concepts not typically taught at this level.

Such a fun book! The book is written in verse that makes you smile with familiarity and surprises along the way. In addition, there are fantastic illustrations that help make the story come to life. Kids love it. I've given copies to many friends and employees with small children. Their children love this book.

Awesome Zoo Book!

This book is very cute. The kids love the silliness and the rhyming. It was the perfect book to read the day before my kindergartners took a field trip to the zoo! Great addition to the classroom library. Would be perfect for home, too!

Great kids book.

I have always found it difficult to encourage little boys to read as it can be difficult to find subject matter they find interesting. This book hit the spot.

It is very cleverly written as a spin on "Twas the night before Christmas," with lots of humor and wonderful creatures to admire. What child doesn't delight in the discussion of spitting, burping, and being naughty.

poor story line quite strange

good for second grade and up

Even and odd are usually stressed in first grade, but this book assumes some prior knowledge, so it seems best for early second grade. This book starts out nicely but the teacher and mom are scary. The last few nonfiction pages are the best.

A Must Have!

You must have this book if you teach math. It is so cute and fun! Each page is full of odd numbers. The story is cute and my students LOVED it!! You must also get My Even Day and My Half Day. I can't wait for more!!!

Kids learn the fun way!

This is a great book for learning about sea animals, how they are alike and different. It has great illustrations, too. My daughter loved it!

If A Dolphin Were A Fish

Delfina is a bottlenose dolphin. She swims through the pages of this beautifully illustrated book, imagining what it would be like to be something other than a dolphin. If she were a fish for instance, she could spend all of her time underwater. Unlike fish that have gills, Delfina has a full set of lungs and breaths through a blowhole on top of her head.

Considering the life of a sea turtle does not appeal to her at all. Slowly lumbering along the beach to lay hundreds of eggs does not sound like a lot of fun. She much prefers to give birth to her calf underwater. She discards the idea of being a shark and being a manatee does not thrill her. The thought of being a bird covered in feathers is too funny to even consider.

Being a boneless octopus is not to her liking either. A dolphin has a skeleton in its body made up of hard bones. Delfina has a backbone, skull and rib bones much like humans. She has five fingers inside of her front flippers that are similar to the bones in our hands. After considering all these alternatives, Delfina decides she likes who she is and has no desire to be anything else. Ask your child if he/she has ever thought of being someone else. This would be an excellent time to point out all of your child's unique attributes and celebrate who they are.

Delightful and Imaginative Book About a Very Special Dolphin

Here is a book about a very special dolphin, Delfina, who often wonders what it would be like to be a different animal. This clever story takes the reader through many different possibilities, including fish, sea turtle, shark, manatee, bird, and octopus. With each animal Delfina could be, the author explains why Delfina is not that animal and along the way, aided by the incredible "morphing" illustrations of artist Laurie Allen Klein, the reader learns exactly what makes Delfina a dolphin.

An especially helpful section in the back of the book, "For Creative Minds" gives the reader even more information about dolphins and includes fun facts and, on the final page, a "Dolphin Adaption Craft" that will be a hit with any young dolphin fan.

This book is sure to be a favorite of all young dolphin lovers. It would also be useful as part of an instructional unit on dolphins and/or sea animals.

Delightful!

A dolphin named Delfina wonders how life would be if she were another different animal. This story teaches about dolphins by explaining why Delfina can't be a turtle, a bird, or many other animals, while giving simple information about each animal.

Certain fun for children and a solid tool for teachers with extra information and teaching aids in the back.

I love the colored pencil illustrations in this book, my favorite being Delfina as a turtle. Envision a small dolphin with a turtle shell and spots.

Writer and illustrator both work for Sea World Orlando in the Education Department. The book has dual lessons: One deals with the science of dolphins and the comparison animals.

What made the experience of listening to Julie the Rockhound the most enjoyable?

The narration by Donna German is very good. This very short story is a perfect introduction to the world of crystals and the fun and fascination gained from learning.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the interaction between Julie and her father. They appeared to be inspired by each other! Young children and early readers will be encouraged to find out more about the fascination of crystals!

What does Donna German bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Donna's narration is very precise and clear. It certainly brings-out the warmth between Julie and her father.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really, but I liked the humour in this short story - particularly by Julie.
