you can't help but fall in love with Hamilton

Hamilton is a not quite scary, small sized troll who just wants to enjoy life. He spends his days helping out his fellow critters and just enjoying his surroundings. That is until a storm comes up and threatens to wash him out of his home and he becomes scared. Luckily for him a young, magical sprite has found herself grounded and looking for company while she waits to fly again.

The story is written in a rhyming verse that flows well. The pictures are great and you can't help but fall in love with Hamilton. This is the first of many adventures for this little troll and a great start. Kids will enjoy and parents will smile at the antics of this fellow. Great fun.

TROLL FINDS A FRIEND

Hamilton Troll is the story of a likeable little Troll named Hamilton, who is just about the size of a mouse. He is a cheerful person and has many friends in the forest. The tiny green troll has a big problem every time it rains. His shelter is merely a hole in a tree stump which floods and threatens to drown him! So poor Hamilton cowers in fear each time the rain approaches. His fall back plan is to hide under a plant with elephant like ears which he calls the Flop Away Home. One day as the sun emerges following a thunderstorm, Hamilton hears singing. He finds a beautiful Pink Sprite Fairy who has been grounded because her wings are soaked. She must wait until they dry to take flight again. Pink Sprite befriends Hamilton and gives him some good advice. Why doesn't he move one of those plants over his tree stump home? Then when the rains come, he will be protected. They go off to talk and play, but all too soon, Pink Sprite's wings are dry. Hamilton is afraid; who will protect him when she leaves him? Pink Sprite reassures him that he will be safe now. Whenever he needs her, he has only to dream of her and the love and friendship that they have for one another. Hamilton has learned not to fear the unknown and to care for others who might need him.

The characters are charmingly drawn in soft muted colors with wonderful expression. The use of such opposite characters as a troll and fairy make it appealing to a wide audience. This story is narrated in verse, which is often catchy and clever. It works most of the time, but there a few long passages in which it breaks down so that children may not be able to fully comprehend its meaning. The author does explain some of the more difficult vocabulary words used like transplant and mystique; the definitions are clearly displayed on the same page avoiding the need to flip to a glossary.

I think children age seven and up will really appreciate the characters and story line of this pleasing tale.

overpriced

I ordered this book sight unseen because it seemed a good topic for a preschool Sunday school class.

While the teaching is sound, the quality of the book itself is lacking. The book is small with black and white illustrations of the quality one finds in dollar store coloring books. I definitely expected more for $7.99. The book is too wordy for preschoolers with only one or two pictures per chapter, but would probably be okay for early elementary children who are reading chapter books. (The book is written in 4 chapters) I'd suggest not buying this book unless you can see it first and make sure it fits what you need.

Members Reviews:

Excellent book for young and old.

Such a delightful and rich book, from concepts to art, it really moves one into a different reality. I feel it is an excellent book for young and old, there is enough to interest both and all. Love the story.

Learning the skills of self-reflection

I read this book for the first time in its original printing when my daughter was very young. I thought that it was too complicated for a small child to understand....I was wrong. The Bezert is an extremely unique book that will expose itself slowly with each additional reading. The first time I read this book I was struck by the intriguing illustrations. Then I read it with my daughter when she was almost 5. She was fascinated with the prose. This book made her mind work. It made her think about things more important than princesses and pirate adventures. It made her think about what it means to be her and to make difficult choices. It led to interesting discussions as she tried to decipher the meaning of the story.

This is not a book that will be simple to read. This is not a book that has an obvious lesson. It requires thought and self reflection that are lacking in many children's books. If you want to see the depth of thought that your child is capable of, this is a great book. It is a book that will take on new levels and meanings as your child grows and it may help you to grow as well.

I find something new to love in The Bezert with each reading

As an educator, grandmother, childcare giver, and children's literature aficionado, I find something new to love in The Bezert with each reading. The fanciful language dances across the page and delights the tongue with a playful whimsy matched by its incredible illustrations, while the message of the book resonates deeply with readers of all ages. As anyone who has read books to little ones knows, musicality is important (especially when you end up reading the same book over and over again, which you will surely do with this fine book), and The Bezert boasts musicality in spades. This book is a treasured fixture in my library and my heart.

What a gem

What a delightful friend the quirky Bezert is to anyone on a journey of discovery and courage! Age-range appeal will be enormous for this engaging story as Bezert's quest knows no boundaries. The amazing illustrations are a perfect companion to the compelling, poetic prose. This gem of a book belongs at the bedside, on the coffee table, and in every student's backpack.

It's smart, easy-to-read

As a retired librarian, I have read many children's books. Maria's Bezert is a refreshing, delightful addition to what I have seen in the last several years. It's smart, easy-to-read, with wonderful illustrations that pull you right into the story. I really enjoyed her book and I know you will too!

Nice insight for parents of spectrum children

I like the way in which this was written. As an autistic adult raising autistic children I have my own insights but for parents who do not know this book can show you possibly that while we may not look it many of us are blissfully happy in our zone. While we are all very different what I read in this book is true for my family of five.

My son mind

Great way explaining, how really things happens with them. I like the book. I recommend this product. We need more books like this( in my mind, why alone, my food, i like this and not that) and in more languages

great

I am a school bus driver for special education children. Some of the students I drive are autistic, and I have a desire to learn as much as I can about how they feel so that I can better care for them during our time together.

Five Stars

Loved it

Cute book!

My 10 year old son is autistic, and loves to read books about autism. He has read this one quite a few times since it is such an easy read.
