Hes familiar with hand-me-downs and handouts, and he took his fair share of ribbing after his nemesis and fellow orphan Max draws a Porsche dealership for the same three-week assignment. Though in a "string" of events and enviable action, Darius goes on the adventure of a lifetime - and, for once, its Darius who gets to call the shots and pull a few strings when a greedy doctor sets his sights on the magic violin.

    Magical violin
This review is by my ten year old violin player. "I liked this book because it is a mystery and had a lot of things going on at once and it involved a violin."
    Bit predictable
Starts okay, with some interesting ideas, but fails to get very exciting with slightly dull characters. Ending is a bit predictable.
    Cute short book
This is a cute story, a bit like Harry Potter. The only thing I didn't like is that the description of the book tells the whole plot, so there is very little surprise.
    pizzicato
A great story of growing up and giving to others. The main charactor is a very giving and kind person who wants to belong and have a family to love and love him.
    Pizzicato
Its the most delightful story its not complicated its one of those tales that when it ends you feel really good about it.

    Narrator: Tara Sands
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-07-12
    Publisher: Listening Library
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Minnie McClary is the new girl and knows that she doesn't quite fit in, especially not after she lost it one day in language arts. In art, Minnie has to paint a self-portrait - but how can she do this when she doesn't even know who she is anymore? Things aren't great at home, either. Her uncle Bill is building a huge replica of the Apache helicopter he flew in Iraq, and her father has blown some sort of whistle and has to start over in a new job.
Then Miss Marks takes over Minnie's language class and encourages students to think critically about everything. They write their thoughts and questions in journals, marking the most private entries "For Your Eyes Only". Minnie and her classmate Amira are inspired, but some people in town wonder why Miss Marks is encouraging students to ask these questions and just what, exactly, she's teaching.
When a group of angry parents demands Miss Marks's suspension, Minnie finds herself asking a lot of questions - and figuring out what she has the power to change.
    Members Reviews:
A "Young Adult" book all adults should read.
Valerie Hobbs writes beautifully about the importance and process of critical thinking, questioning, and speaking through the lens of a 6th grader named Minnie. In addition to gracefully questioning how we learn and enact "othering" through prejudice, hate, name calling and rejecting what is different from ourselves, Hobbs raises great questions about what good teaching is, what it might feel like for girls to step into their power, the lasting wounds of conflict both on the school grounds and in war. She shows the resilience for healing relationships (familial, friendship, enemies, and communal) that can come from unflinching and heartfelt communication And she does so with honesty and grace.

    Great book
My daughter loves these books. Even though the book was used it came in great condition!
Bought for 6 year old who likes to read this series
Glad my granddaughter liked this- it IS fantasy and I am happy she likes that. The writing is Not magical. But I made someone happy by giving them the gift they really wanted. That counts for something.

My daughter likes to read books. As she has a wonderful imagination. The books are on time and at a good price.
"The best book I've ever read!"
In this book there's a girl named Jessie the princess and she lives with her grandma Mrs Belairs and her mum Rosemary. In their backyard they have a secret door to a garden called the Realm! In the Realm there's a place called the Hidden Valley and in the Hidden Valley there are usually lots of Fairy Apple Trees, but today there isn't.
The reasons I liked the book are:
    1) When you get to the middle of the book it starts a problem and that's when you get in the mood of the story. It really catches your imagination.
    2) The second reason I liked the book is because every chapter there's a picture and the picture looks so real!
    3) I like the author Emily Rodda because she writes interesting books and she has won five awards!
Do you want to know what happened? Well what are you waiting for? Read the story and find out! I think you should read this book because Emily Rodda seems to know what children want to read!
(thanks to Mariam for helping with this review)
    Wonderful!
This is book #4 in the series, in it Jessie learns that her Grandmother is worried about the Fairy Realm, mostly Hidden Valley and the fairy-apple trees that grow there. She asks Jessie to go to the Realm to find out what is wrong. So Jessie goes to the Realm taking a gnome, (Bilbert the Brave) that they found trapped in the human world, with her and asks for help from her friends there, Maybelle the miniature horse, Patrice the palace housekeeper and Giff the Elf.
I like these books they are a fun read, with many interesting characters and adventures. They are very hard to put down once you start to read them. They make me smile and worry and celebrate. And quietly in the background of the story is a good values message, like keeping promises is important, and don't be too greedy, etc. It doesn't hit you over the head with them, you just kind of feel them as you read. I really like the illustrations too. So start with #1 and get reading but have #2 handy as you will want to read more once you start.

    Excellent book, excellent author
Sequel to a book I teach in class. The kids loved it. An excellent gothic novel, which is not a genre you see in kids literature every day.
    Excellent read aloud to children
I am a 5th grade teacher. In the fall, I read Peppermints in the Parlor to my class. They loved it so now we are reading the sequel
Peppermints in the Parlor 2.0 with minor changes
This book would have been wonderful if I had read it without reading the first book, but it was pretty much peppermints in the parlor written again with a different title. I loved Peppermints in the Parlor and it is one of my favorite books from elementary school but the sequel just doesn't cut it.
    [...]
    Another winner
THE PERILS OF PEPPERMINTS is a perfect--and long awaited--sequel to Barbara Wallace's PEPPERMINTS IN THE PARLOR. It was worth the wait. Ms. Wallace is a delight, as usual. I loved the book, as did my grandchildren.
    A Virginia reader
    Great Book!
After reading Peppermints in the Parlor I eagerly began The Perils of Peppermints. What a delight! Is it possible that the second was better than the first? Just maybe -- both books are terrific!

    Title: Permanent Rose
    Subtitle: Casson Family, Book 3

    Narrator: Sophie Aldred
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-25-12
    Publisher: Listening Library
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Feisty Rose takes center stage as the highly original Casson family faces a long, hot summer. As usual, things are a bit chaotic. Eldest daughter Caddy is now engaged to darling Michael, and shes not altogether sure she likes it. Saffy and Sarah are on a mission to find Saffys biological father (while cultivating hearts of stone). Indigo is cautiously beginning a friendship with a reformed bully, who desperately wants to feel like part of the Casson family. Rose, while missing Tom (who none of them have heard from) dreadfully, enters into a life of petty crime, shoplifting small items until her misadventures nearly bring disaster. Through it all, Roses single-minded determination to find Tom remains as fierce as it is hopeless. Or is it?
Hilary McKay has painted the fond mayhem of this delightful family with such humor, warmth, and authenticity that listeners will fall in love with them all over again. Once youve visited the Casson household, you may never want to leave.
    Members Reviews:
    Fun read for middle schoolers
As a middle school teacher, I am always looking for books I can recommend to reluctant readers. I just finished Permanent Rose (I read the books before I add them to my classroom library), and I am happy to say that this one is going to school with me. There is enough angst in the story to keep poor readers going and enough depth to satisfy the teacher in me. The English setting adds to the appeal--but does not get in the way of understand. The characters are fun despite (or because of) their faults, and face the same problems my preteen students face in suburban California. Loyalty to family, friends, and doing the right thing, even if it is difficult, are subtly brought out--without being preachy.
For more enjoyment, get the two prior novels and enjoy the changes in the characters. As they get older their problems become more serious--but with the support of family and friends, they manage to make difficult choices and handle life well.
A quirky, humorous, and memorable story
PERMANENT ROSE follows more adventures of the deliciously bizarre Casson family. This sequel to SAFFY'S ANGEL (which won the prestigious Whitbread Award, among other honors) and INDIGO'S STAR focuses on eight-year-old Rose, who is yearning for her friend Tom. Tom went back to America ages ago, and no one has heard from him since. Rose, in her grief, has turned to shoplifting. Her brother Indigo, hoping to distract her, reads her bits of King Arthur and Sir Lancelot tales. At first Rose dislikes the stories with their old ornate words, but she soon identifies with the friendship theme and longs for a quest of her own.
Other characters' tales are interwoven into Rose's story. Cousin Saffy, who has always lived with the Cassons, decides she must find her true father. Her friend Sarah helps her search.
Rose's sister Caddy doesn't seem at all positive that she should keep Michael's engagement ring. Rose is horrified at the thought of Caddy's engagement ending. She adores Michael, who brings her a rose every morning. If Caddy returns his ring, Michael is sure to leave, which would break Rose's heart. She's had enough friends leave. Rose decides to make sure that the engagement ring is not available to be returned.
A boy named David has somehow insinuated himself into the Casson family. He adores Rose, but she can't forgive him for the way he once bullied Indigo.

    Not what I expected
Decided to read this book for a graduate school project and ended up being really pleased with it. Unexpectedly, it has a bit of steam punk and a whole lot of mystery. I found myself really curious about some of the unknown--to a point where I was asking those around me to guess what the outcome would be. A great read. The notes at the end provide excellent information and reference for those unfamiliar with the Victorian era.
    great read!
it was very interesting and entertaining! It conveyed people's feelings when they're alone and how it feels to not know a parent.
    Amazing and exciting
I loved this book. It was full of inspiration for the people who were different and a heartwarming adventurous book
    Wow. Just wow!
    Needs a Sequel!
Couldn't put the book down, it was so good, and it needs a sequel. Amazing, and kept me in suspense.
This is a very involved story for a children's book and I was not disappointed. There are traces of fantasy
I picked up this book from my library because the cover was appealing and I needed a book with a one word title for my Summer Reading.
This is a very involved story for a children's book and I was not disappointed. There are traces of fantasy, paranormal, steampunk, and mystery/crime in this book and fans of any of those genres will really enjoy the story.
The underlying themes of finding family where there is no blood relation, moving on from past hurts, and putting others needs before your own are prevalent and will help teach valuable lessons to children reading this book. Focusing especially on the main character's background and growth throughout the book lends a beautiful coming of age aspect to the book that will certainly reach younger kids getting to that pre-teen/teenager part of their lives.

    Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:
Mann! Mann! Mann!

This book series is focused audience is 8-13. However, the literary level is by far at a very hi level. The historical context of the1893 worlds fair is amazing as someone who has studied that event. Worth the read at any age.
