The listening (which I attribute to the narrator) is fine.

What could Jacques Couvillon have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I was under the impression, from books that were linked as similar, that this book was an upbeat coming-of-age story. In fact it was an agonizing story of the neglect and abuse that a crazy, selfish mother inflicted on a kind child. The story was made more real by the talent of the author.

cute and touching

Brought to life with a great reading that really captures the naive first person narrative's spirit. Lots of funny moments and a few very touching ones as friendship and love and the lack of both are explored.

Even better than the first one

Don't read this without reading The Seven Professors of the Far North first. But do read both. This one is, if anything, better than the first book. It has a lot more aviation, for one thing, with airplanes, microlights (trikes for Americans) and children dangling out of airships over mysterious chateaux in Switzerland. I hope this John Fardell guy keeps going. He is a wonderful writer.

Disappointing last book in the series

After reading all previous six books in this series, I was looking forward to the conclusion. However this seventh and last book - while a good read in itself - didn't draw the story to any sort of conclusion. It felt as if the way was left open for another book, and I was disappointed. It's fine to leave a story hanging if it's just a one-book one, but after seven books, I felt the need for some sort of rescue and conclusion.

Great series! Like "Lost" for kids. It's hard to find a good series for this age group but this was great.

I thought this was a great book and I like all of the books in the "Flight 29 Down" series.

The Seven- A review by a fan of the TV Series and Books

So, heres Book 2.. The Seven have been stranded for a few days now. Food starts to become a major issue, a mysterious "friend" appears to help, Eric plays more of his tricks but then really ends up in trouble, the group sends a 'message in a bottle', Blackmail comes in more ways then one.. That just a few of the things happening. A nice refreshing book series and a wonderful read.

The book focuses more on Jackson then even the show does, which is good in a way, but bad in others. It takes away from Jackson's 'mysterious' personality, but then again, show some of his thoughts.

One of the things that I noticed right away was, because the writer was different, the writing style was different. Although it followed the series well, the characters seemed a little out of character. Especially Jackson. There was also less comedy and sarcasm then the first one. The writer of the first book wrote it like D.J. MacHale would have wrote it. This style is totally different. It doesn't take away from the book, though. But, just be warned that the reading is a little different then the first.

Still a great book- I recommend it.

Really, Really Good!!

I read this after I read the first one, and man, this series is really good.It is very accurate to the show only getting one thing slightly out of order.The Seven also includes a preview to the next book which is nice.

A very good read for any fan of the series.

If you could sum up Sophie in the Saddle in three words, what would they be?

If youve listened to books by Dick King-Smith before, how does this one compare?

I grew up with the Sophie books, and now on second listening I find this entry as more of a filler compared to the rest of the series. The book seems to set up the rest of the series rather than introduce any new plotlines. This is the first story that Sophie does not get a new pet for example, instead discovers her love of horse riding, which sets up her plan for the final two books. However the situation with Dawn on the beach is amusing, as is the horse who is afraid of pig. Overall some good episodes but less impacting than the rest of the series.

Which character as performed by Bernard Cribbins was your favourite?

Bernard Cribbins give an amazing performance to all the characters as usual, but his masterful tones as the Cornish farm owners is a stand out guest character in this story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, my other problem with this book is how short it is.

Excellent read. Historical Fiction based on events that took place. References to factual accounts are in the back of the book

This is a very interesting book based on a group, mostly survivors of the ghettos during the Holocaust, taking revenge on those operating the Holocausts evil processing during WWII. The book is stated as historical fiction but many/most of the incidents in the book took place. One particular revenge act, poisioning the bread eaten by captured SS, I was able to track down in the NY Times archives. There are referecnes to non-fictional accounts in the back of the book. I found this book an excellent read.

More Twists than a Bowl of Spagetti!

I actually bought this book expecting it to be something else!

I was at the airport generally wasting time when I got the impulse to buy a book for my flight. I was looking for something interesting, not really heavy, but nevertheless a mystery and something that would take my mind off my work for the eight hour flight. This book really met all of my expectations.

The characters were well developed and realistic and the author intergrated them well into the plot of the book.

The plot was totally believeable, especially for me being a baby boomer brought up in a time when the second world war was still a strong memory for most of my family. The Nazi hunter subplot was interesting, intriguing and I undertand it was adapted from historical events. The twists and turns were punctuated by the occasional hint of romance and the potential for a steamy liaison between the two main characters Tom and Rebecca.

At times the plot and the rememberances of the jewish holocost pulled on my emotional heart strings. This balanced the excitement of the mystery. The final outcome was a twist and again quite believeable.

This book fully satisfied my desire for an interesting and intriguing story. I was not disapointed - It had more twists and loose ends than a bowl of my mother's spagetti.

seems i read this before

the story seems very much like all the other stories I have read about mean animals ruling over nice ones. also they put a lot of human characteristics on the birds. from the way they move to how they feel. they way they describe the movements seem impossible for a bird to do. I liked the wolves of the beyond better ( note the wolves of the beyond is very dark but good ).

Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

This book captured my attention when I was in fourth grade. My language arts teacher had shown it to us and said,

"A 12 year old wrote this! This is what you can do if you set your mind to it!"

Natrually I wanted to read it.

But that was 3 years ago, amd I am now in seventh grade. I started reading this book when I was at home, feeling terribly sick. I read some of the reviews to this book, saying that it wasn't descriptive enouugh, or that it had a predictable plotline.

They were so wrong.

The story instantly captured me, and suddenly I was in Stone-Run forest. It was incredibly detailed, so much so that I felt like I was inside Fortress Glooming, a soldier in the battles fought against evil, a slavebird under the control of the tyrant known as Turrat.

This is a favorite of mine, which is a gargantuan acomplishment on my part, considering that I love every book I see. I recommend this book to Warriors lovers and those who love action, peace, and hardship.

I bought this book for a class. The reports I got back is that the students really liked it. They seem to appreciate books out of the ordinary.

This book was obviously written by a young writer, as you can see the difference in her writing style. I wasn't fully intrigued by it, not ecstatic to read it every day after school, but it was nice.

Excellent book for the kids

My kids love this book, we have listened to it a number of times, especially on long journeys in the car. My husband is not a fan but, like all of Andy Griffiths books, they are not aimed at him. Sting does a brilliant job reading it and makes it more enjoyable than I could ever with my reading of the book. Highly recommend.

ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT

It was a little too fast paced in the beginning but after two or three chapters there was a cliffhanger at the end if every chapter. It has a little bit of humor but not too much that the book was a joke. I loved the mystery and how it made you wonder what would happen next. If you are one of those people who doesn't really like to read this is a great book. I really enjoyed it and I totally recommend it.

Fun Read

Humorous parody that will hit home for anyone who grew up on the various "teen wonder pulp" series of the '40s, '50s or '60s (Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, etc.) I'll have to let someone else speak to whether it works for today's teens.

You can enjoy this without having first read its prequel, "Whales on Stilts." But I intend to pick up a copy, now that I've been introduced to Anderson's cast of characters!

Stupidity Quintupled

I really wanted to dislike this book, too.

As a big fan of the old juvenile series books Mr. Anderson is making fun of here, I wasn't looking forward to seeing them trashed, and it was pretty obvious from the description that trashing them was exactly what he was planning to do.

In addition IMHO Mr. Anderson is only about half as funny as he thinks he is. What he does with Eddie Wax and Stumpy (I don't dare describe it!) is both poignant and hilarious.

Portraying the Manley Boys as cruel but incredibly stupid bullies is just annoying.

I've never read a book in which nasal allergies played so prominent a role in the plot.

I PRAY that I never read another!

And what in the world is a satire ofThe Sound of Musicdoing in here?

But the fact is that I enjoyed the first bookWhales on Stiltsin spite of all my misgivings; in fact these are the first two books to have me laughing out loud while reading them in years. Clearly Mr. Anderson is growing on me, kind of like a hideous wart that cannot be killed, and I am forced to admit that he really stuck the landing: the ending was incredibly stupid, totally insane,...

and just about perfect!

I contemplate the third book in the seriesJasper Dash and the Flame-Pits of Delawarewith a sense of impending doom...

and barely contained anticipation!

An exciting page-turner for children
