Suddenly, Eden is turned upside down: love blossoms between the town drunk and his teetotaling neighbor, the Barrow Boys make parole, and the teenagers give the snooping sheriff's deputy more than a whiff of birdshot.
The Garden of Eden is about loyalty, sticking with those you love, tolerance and forgiveness, and the simple solutions ordinary people find to keep small communities strong.
    Critic Reviews:
"Adams's understated humor and generous spirit make this a comforting story of lessons being learned, demons getting laid to rest, and good guys winning." (Publishers Weekly)

    The True Garden of Eden
Let me preface this by acknowledging that this is my first ever review and the reason for it to encourage a sequel, prequel or just another Eve Adams book. My wife was so taken that she got on Mr. Coont's web site and inquired if he intended to write another Eve Adams book to which he tactfully said no.
A delightful romp! Stephen Coonts (aka Eve Adams) is well known as a masterful storyteller and in the Garden of Eden he does not disappoint. While this is not a nail-biting, page turning Jake Grafton adventure the plot and character development as well as the humor are pure Coonts. This (probably) West Virginia town of Eden is filled with the most wonderful group of misfits, characters and fine people you could ever hope to meet and our brief encounter with them has us either guffawing or grinning with delight at every turn. One of Stephen's, er pardon me, Eve's characters interjects a little homespun philosophy on relationships that should give us all pause to ponder and the grand finally is grand and gives each of us a reason to be hopeful. The sad part of this enchanting novel is turning the last page and having to leave Eden. I do hope that Mr. Coonts, er, Eve will reconsider and enrich our live with another rendezvous in Eden.
    Good story
Fun and heart warming. Very enjoyable. I would recommend
This book to anyone. This book made me aware that something
Thought provoking and entertaining is rather rare, this book was both of these things.
    Five Stars
This was a wonderful light reading with warmth, compassion & a lot of humor. Very pleasant read.
    Humorous and entertaining
This book is entertaining and humorous. The interrelationships between characters provide a good representation of small town life. Well done.
    Five Stars
Great characters, strongly believable interactions among them. All in Coonts' usual, excellent story telling style.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Lums are cursed. Ever since Grandpa Melvin was inspired to join the U.S. army after watching a Popeye movie and, as family lore has it, unleashed a "relentless rain of steel death" upon the Nazis, Lum after Lum has been doomed to an untimely demise, be it by tainted cheeseburger or speeding ice-cream truck. The most recent victim is Louis Lum's mother, struck down by a medical student asleep at the wheel. Now Louis, a 20-something fact checker at a hot-rod magazine, must move back home with his gangsta rap-obsessed father, Sonny, to prevent him from enacting the revenge he promises.
But soon Louis finds himself more concerned with another wayward family member, his uncle Bo Lum, who has disappeared in Hong Kong after many years of self-imposed exile. After the annual family meeting at Grandma Esther's house, Louis decides to leave his father to go to Hong Kong and find Bo, his grandmother's favorite son. As Louis's search progresses, the tragicomic story of three generations of Lums in America is revealed through the eyes of Louis, Sonny, and Grandma Esther.
A novel about the unexpected ways love and myth work to both sustain and threaten family ties, A Long Stay in a Distant Land introduces a wry and original new voice in American fiction.
    Critic Reviews:
"Charmingly eccentric and refreshingly unstereotypical." (Publishers Weekly)
"This is a dazzling debut: poignant, prickly, and deliciously absurd." (Booklist)

    Hard To Follow
This is no doubt a much different story when read than listened to. For one, without a family tree chart or chapter headings to glance up at there was some trouble figuring out who was who and when was when, as the story jumped back and forth in time and across generations and from relative to relative. Confusing.
The narrator was not altogether unpleasant, although his elderly voices, either male OR female, did tend to sound similar, almost sterotypical.
Of Just a Little More Than Passing Interest
My reviews are usually based on time and dollar value. This was a book worth listening to but I hope it might have been better. I was glad it was a short listen, which is to say, right after listening to it I felt it was barely worth the one book credit it cost me. It didn't grab me in a way that I couldn't wait to get some quiet iPOD time so I could get to listening to it again. But I'm glad I waited a month or so to put down this review. My memories of it are good. The story was interesting, even poignant at times. I do remember having a problem trying to remember (figure out) which character was who and when, but now that time has evened out those puzzlements, I can say that the general mood the book left me with was a wholehearted one. The central "characters" all worked through what they needed to work through. They felt their life's resolutions were workable. Less angst and more understanding. Something we need more of in late 20th early 21st century fiction.
You may wish to try it. But give it a good, solid 10 minute sample reading first.
A Long Stay In a Boring Book
Only got about half way through this audiobook. The characters are unappealing. I couldn't stand Sonny and his love for cockroach-infested apartments. His wife was a wuss who allowed him to trample on her. His mother was stereotyped.
The plot (if there is one) is disjointed in addition to being convoluted.

How much change can one summer bring?
If you're Caddie Winger, 32 years old, still living with her grandmother and giving piano lessons to neighborhood children, one summer can make the whole world look different. Caddie's mother died when she was nine, and her grandmother raised her. Now their roles are reversed, and it's Caddie who takes care of Nana. When her grandmother breaks a leg and insists on going into a convalescent home, Caddie finds herself being pulled out of her comfy, self-made nest. Living alone for the first time since college, she uncovers some startling truths from her past.
Jolted, she looks at the world with new eyes and begins to take charge of her future. As she makes a new best friend, takes risks she never dreamed she could, and navigates the depths and shallows of true love and devastating heartbreak, Caddie learns how to trust other people and, ultimately, how to trust herself.
Wise, moving, and reassuringly real, The Goodbye Summer offers us a deeper understanding of the perplexing and invigorating magic that is life itself.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Caddie is endearing." (Publishers Weekly)
"Jan Maxwell gives a pleasant reading as Gaffney's novel explores intergenerational relationships and life lessons shared by young and old....Maxwell approaches Caddie's highs and lows with vocalizations that ring true." (AudioFile)

    Disappointing
This book was disappointing. It jumped too quickly without giving enough of s story. The ending seemed to be rushed and did not give the reader a true feeling that the story had indeed ended!
    Such a disappointment
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The Saving Graces is one of my favorite books so I decided to try another of Patricia Gaffney's books. I find it hard to believe the same woman wrote both books. This one left me empty and it ended without any real solutions to Caddie's struggles. It ended as it began. So disappointing!

    Publisher's Summary:
Now Sylvia is a single mom with troubles of her own, and she needs Howard's help. She is being hauled into a drug rehab program and she asks Howard to care for her 9-year-old son, Ryan. The presence of this nervous, resourceful boy in Howard's life transforms him utterly. With a child's happiness at stake, communication takes on a fresh urgency, and the routine that Howard has evolved over the years, designed specifically to minimize the agony of human contact, suddenly feels restrictive and even dangerous. Forced out of his groove, Howard finds unexpected delights (in baseball, in work, in meals with his housemates). His home comes alive with the joys, sorrows, and love of a real family. But these changes also open Howard to the risks of loss and to the rage he has spent a lifetime suppressing.
Written with a luminous simplicity and grace, The Ha-Ha follows Howard down his difficult path to a new life. It is a deeply moving and unforgettable story about the cost of war and the infinite worth of human connection.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Compelling, compassionate." (Booklist)

The Ha Ha is no laughing matter
I bought this book eight years ago and put it in the to be read box where it is has sat unread until last week. I have no excuse. It should have been read sooner both for the writer and the reader.
There is so much in this book and Howard Kapostsash carries it all in his head because he can not speak because he decided a long time ago to take that off the list of things to be rehabilitated when he came back from Nam with half his head creased like a dented cantaloupe.
There is everything he remembers, his parents, Sylvia, football, sex, the first time kind of sex in all of its tender and passionate display, the explosion, the flower just before his headlong flight, betrayal, intended and not, and most of all Ryan who connects everything that cannot be connected for Howard.
The entire narrative of this story takes place inside of Howard's head. Dave King fully imagines the flow of memory and emotion, as well as the always odd connection between present sensation and past memory, with a language of joy and grief equally in measure.
There is grace in this book. You can't share it if you don't read it.
    Channels for communication
Very very few books have touched my soul as did The Ha Ha. As I read it, I had to stop many times to contemplate Howard's existence; his world. What might if feel like to be this extraordinary yet prosaic protagonist. How do we communicate as one human being to another? What happens to our world and our relationships when we cannot speak or read or write - but can still think and feel? Author Dave King casts a brilliant light on this compelling and at times heartbreaking condition - to think but not to speak. To hear but not to be able to respond. To understand but not have the ability to read. Communication is all we have to reach out to another person; to engender love or hate; to learn and share experience. Yet in some subtle way, Howard is able to tell os of his life through the words of King. It is extraordinary and subtle.
I had to stop at various points in the book to let myself feel the events in the daily lives of the protagonist and of the very few people with whom he creates a bond. Howard's inability to communicate in the conventional sense does not leave us with a bitter or solitary man.

    Ugh, painful, and breathtaking
This is one of the best audiobooks I've "read".
I'm so sad that the author doesn't have other books.
I went and bought the book so I could read it again more quickly.
    Engaging and Dark
This is a good book. It's not always easy to listen to--not because of the narrator, but because it's painful to hear the story of adolescence, especially that of Nina, the main character. But it's worth listening to. The author does an excellent job of storytelling and the narrator does a good reading of the book. You cheer for Nina, you cry for her, you recognize parts of yourself in her...she's a very REAL character. It's not a light and fluffy read or listen--there's depth here.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a charming cul-de-sac in suburban Connecticut, three close-knit couples find their long-cherished harmony undone when a lovely, younger neighbor, widowed a year ago and presumably still unattached, turns up pregnant.
Who is the father? Could it be one of the husbands?
One by one, the couples turn inward, taking stock of their marriages and of the loyalties that perhaps have been taken too much for granted. In each case this close scrutiny reveals a weakness, and for each wife the situation becomes the kind of crisis that forces her to make a decision -- one that will result in either the strengthening or the dissolution of her marriage.
Filled with suspense, surprises, and the kind of insights into the minds and hearts of her characters that have won Barbara Delinsky a huge and loyal following, The Woman Next Door is an ingenious portrait of suspicion and deception, faith and love.

    Not the best
It was basically an okay story, but the end was very disappointing. I hoped for a more dramatic ending - not a wishy-washy one.
Babara is a great author and after reading this book
What a writer. This book kept me in suspense from the first page. Babara is a great author and after reading this book, I have read about 10 of her novels and found each and everyone to be just as suspenseful from the first page as this was. I would highly recommend it.
    Graet book
This was a good story, it shows how people can jump to conclusions about a situation without really knowing the truth behind it. It also shows how people who you thought was a good neighbor can turn against you in a situation and shows how some people can be compassionate in any situation. The neighbor was pretty so she was presumed to be bad.
    My Best read for 2016
This was a good read! It had a bit of mystery as well as love story! The end left some questions for me so a sequel would be very nice.....
    A Real "Page Turner"!
This is a great book to make you forget the lazy, hazy days of Summer that we are having now. Barbara has a talent for making the reader feel as if they know the characters in her books and The Woman Next Door is certainly no exception. These people could easily be your friends or neighbors and you often feel as if you are eavesdropping on their private lives. This story takes place in western Connecticut and, since I live there too, it was fun to read about towns that I know. This book explores many of the problems that are facing families today and is a "must read" for parents of teenagers.

Sizzling with acid observations, and textured with wicked humour and gentle humanity, Between the Assassinations is a trumph of voice and imagination.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent storytelling.
This is excellent storytelling (beautifully read) with glimpses of life in a random Indian city. Kind of nice and unusual that there isn't really a story as such, but that is also the reason for me not giving this book 5 stars.
    if ever
If ever a book was meant for Audio, this is it. The guidebook music and explanations at the beginning of the chapters is perfect for it. You are about to have a short guided tour of small areas, and people in a completely different culture and environment from our own. It is amusing, in places distressing. but clearly insightful, and I would love to see a sequel where the lives of the very wealthy are equally covered. I found myself wanting to know so much more about each character and sad to move on to the next. I really disagree with the previous reviewer, keep the guidebook theme and music it adds to the quirkiness of the whole book, and it is really quirky.
compelling short stories all set in the same town
This collection has grown on me - once I'd got over the irritating music which is played to indicate that excerpts of a guidebook are being read before each story i found the stories increasingly compelling, although the book does make India seem like a pretty terrible and hopeless place, as with a couple of exceptions the people in the stories almost always fall into the categories of either the thanklessly exploited poor, or the spoilt, cruel and thoughtless rich. and, thankfully, the annoying postman pat sounding music is entirely absent from the stories themselves, and seeing as the 'guidebook' excerpts are only there to provide a mildly amusing contrast with 'real life'and in no way essential to the plot or substance of the stories really, you can always forward through the music to the stories themselves.

    Poetic writing: 5 Narrative: 2
This novel impressed me as intelligent and thought provoking. It follows the life of an art historian, Dominique, from her early days in the university. In these early days, she falls in love with a man, Rex, who brings out her passion. While he is her intellectual match, he abruptly leaves academia, instead pursuing a patchwork life helping various leftist causes. With the same suddenness that he abandons academia, he abandons Dominique suddenly, and without warning...and not just once! She keeps coming back for more, for decades, only to have him disappear, usually without warning. There are other men (one in particular) who are much more generous and caring towards her, but she is always drawn to Rex. Dominique's interior monologue, the erudite commentaries on art and academia, her dry wit, and some of the author's imagery are enough to hold one's attention. I also enjoyed the narration by Celeste Lawson. However, Dominique's repeated returns to Rex over decades strain credibility, as he really does not come across as a likeable or dependable person. Dominique, as developed by the author, is such an intelligent and thoughtful observer of human nature that her lifelong obsession with Rex does not make sense. What I found most lacking about this book was the story line. Despite all the interior monologue and having read about more than 3 decades of her life, I feel as if I really didn't know what Dominique's day-to-day life was like. Except for her academic work and appreciation of Poussin and Goya (described in some detail), much of the rest of her life (friends, relatives, losses, vacations, shopping, neighbors, etc.) is absent from the story. In the end, the book struck me as interesting for some of its imagery, dialogue, and commentaries, but lacking in narrative substance. Not very highly recommended.
    Pretentious, rambling, inner-monologue, no story!
I couldn't even finish this book. I turned it off in disgust and said "Ugh! The pretentiousness!" Well, actually, I swore at a swerving minivan, but the sentiment was there.
I have to agree with Everett that it seemed odd that Dominique would keep returning to Rex. What seemed even more odd, though, was that every other man in the novel desired Dominique, she treated them like dirt, and I seriously could see no reason why they would keep coming back to a woman so emotionally unavailable.

    Face Your Worst Fears
Authorities on overcoming fear advise people to get closer to their fears. That advice taken to extremes can lead to some pretty dangerous activities. That's the premise of Days of Drums which takes the daughter of a slain senator working for the U.S. Secret Service protecting other politicians, including Senator Charles Westbourne.
When a deadly assassin targets Westbourne, Holland Tylo finds herself in the cross-hairs of a plot that threatens her career, more lives, and to reveal ugly secrets. The assassin's clever plans put Tylo at a disadvantage . . . one from which she has a hard time recovering.
The plot is pretty straightforward, and the action's pace is fast. If you are like me, you'll find this book to be an enjoyable way to pass the time during an airplane trip or a long wait.
The opening scenes in the book are the best parts. The book ends up being less interesting at the end than in the beginning. Those who enjoy reading about investigations will enjoy the solving-the-crime aspects of the story. Character development and intriguing insights are at a minimum.
Alternate Title: Book of Silly Similes
This is a fairly entertaining thriller following the current trend of male authors in which the protagonist is a female spy, cop, detective, etc. In this case our heroine works for the Secret Service. There is some unintentional hilarity in this book: The author has serious problems with similes and metaphors. The author has our gal lying in bed. Does a sensuous word picture describe the scene? Not really. He has her lying there "curled like a shrimp." Ideas take hold of her like fishooks lodging in her brain. She senses events "moving on the horizon, arranging and rearranging themselves the way a lava flow crushes and mutates the landscape." Here's an experiment for you. Fill a manila envelope with photographs. Hold them up in the air and dump them out on a desk. Do they fall out like "butterfly wings?" Mr. Shelby thinks they will. Later, our sweet heroine finds that her,"mourning and guilt had been cauterized, like a white hot iron pressed against an open vein, leaving her swollen with contempt." Light continually "crawls", sometimes through the window at dawn, at another time over tinted glass. There are some even better ones, but they have faded from memory.
