this one is worth a read

I have never been interested in the "waldon pond" era in our history; but, this book changed my mind. So much good historical information encased in a well-written novel; characters are well drawn and interesting; good description of natural scenery and period structures. And, the actual well-documented fire might have happened just like the author imagined it!

Woodsburner is a beautifully written piece of historical fiction, thoughtful, funny, and constantly entertaining.

Imaginative & Gripping Historically-Based Novel

This compelling novel features the multiple viewpoints of several engaging characters, a technique that can be annoying if it's not done as expertly as it is here. The story offers an imaginative pre-history to Thoreau's Walden Pond era, grounded in the facts of his life, (though you don't have to be a Thoreau fan to enjoy it). Fictional characters are blended with a true-life event: a massive fire, accidentally set. Impeccably researched details make that fire in the woods credible as well as horrifying.

It tells an interesting story about four differerent people that have in common only this large fire and it goes on to tell how they were each indidually affected.

Delightful imagining

The characters come alive in all their fears and foibles. A rare book about how different individuals react to crises and the stories they tell themselves.

everybody is so good

even among awfull nazis, there is one who is such a good man. No passion, no problems, it's love an glory, a soap for... who?

A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

This works really well as an audiobook. I had already listened to, and enjoyed, the radio 4 book of the week version, but this unabridged version is better. Using different voices to read each letter means that you never get confused over who wrote each one.

Very enjoyable and compelling novel

A very good novel and totally unexpected in its charm and beautiful flowing storyline. The whole book is based around numerous short letters between Juliet Ashton, an established author, and various people; mainly those living in the post World War 2 island of Guernsey.

The mysterious book title 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' is quickly explained when various members of the society start their correspondence with Juliet. From there Juliet decides to visit the island and ends up falling in love with the island and its occupants. Juliet is also torn between the affections of 2 men, but which one will it be?

All in all a very enjoyable read and can thoroughly recommend this

An unexpected joy

A wonderful book. The book starts as a light and pleasant read but as it progresses I found myself drawn in by the utterly compelling human story unfolding. The book manages to present the picture of the Nazi occupation of Guernsey in a fresh and touching way and yet still manages to have moments of wit. I laughed and cried as I read it. A quirky and quite original story that is about love and support between friends and neighbours that both entertains and informs. Both well written and well read. Highly recommended.

Sweet book - piqued my interest in Guensey

Would you listen to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society again? Why?

I found it a little hard going at 1st, a bit jolly hockey sticks mixed with Mills & Boon but then you just get wrapped in a lovely warm security blanket of lovely people living in an bucolic community and you think everything is all going to turn out fine, but it doesn't and thats wakes you up again and the story becomes more poignant/gripping. I have started reading Ebenezer Le Page after reading this book as it piqued my interested in what really happened/what life was really like for a Guensey man/women..

You will learn a lot...

I'm sure that as a "teaching tool," this book deserves 5 stars. It is truly not entertaining though. I love Georgette Heyer's novels and I hoped that this was a story...perhaps I didn't read the description well enough. It is a very detailed lesson about the culture, fashion, customs, etc. of the Regency period.

If you are looking to verify the accuracy of Heyer's stories...this should do it ; )

Sets the historical context straight

All the details of the novels and how they tied into the historical information of the setting. Quite informative. Not a novel, but full of interesting tidbits.

Fascinating Social History

I was a snob about romantic fiction until I started background research on its history for an academic paper; this book was part of my discovery about the care that Heyer took with her beautifully written literature. Kloester has produced a witty and helpful guide (the fabrics, the alcohol, and something of the political time) aiding the understanding, and entertainment value of the books. Charlotte Strevens has exactly the right register and humour in her performance to make this book live, Highly recommend.

A detailed introduction to the period

Would you listen to Georgette Heyer's Regency World again? Why?

No. But I would read it again in the print version, especially if there were plenty of illustrations.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Georgette Heyer's Regency World?

The section on food and meals was fascinating. All the sections were interesting though.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Charlotte Strevens?

I'm afraid not. She has a nice voice but some odd pronunciation and rather elocution-y voice was something of a distraction.

Not that sort of book! It is a look at the social history of the period, using as examples some of Georgette Heyer's characters.

spellbound by this author's story of an attempt to build a railroad

That would cross and connect their great nation! The political intrigue of men and women of the time will keep you entertained!

political frustration big money

A round about story with unclear ending for me. I cried more than once. I like the character development. Sad parts really tear jerkers.

Intriguing Plot

Very intriguing plot which moved rapidly and held my attention.

Captain Travis D. Rainesin is in charge of the Sea Storm (sailing ship).

Asa Whitlock (50+, goods trader) aboard the ship made Captain Rainesin an offer.

Emily Whitlock (wife) was quite skeptical of her husbandâs many diversified business ventures.

Travis Raines (Captain) later meets Mrs. Miranda Sherwood (2nd. Wife, wealthy, beautiful). Her husband Mr. Anson Sherwood (72, husband, financier, 3 children) recently passed away of heart failure.

Miranda is quite wealthy & has a lot of clout with the U.S. Government both at the State/Federal levels. She makes Travis a very lucrative offer also.

Asa & Miranda want the same thing to fund & help build railroads all over the U.S.

What were Lester Isaac & Keith Frey spreading around about Travis?

Senator Thomas Hart Benton (Missouri) presented his case/cause to the Senate on both land development & the building of a railroad system across the U.S.

How many more yrs. will it take for the major land developments & the railroad system to exist?

Is there a romance brewing for Travis & Miranda?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written historical fiction book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great 1840âs Western movie, or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Good listen

Well as someone that grew up down under and moved to Canada in 1966 it was a pleasure to read a rather well put together novel weaving the history of early Australia.Liked it so much I listened to the second. Glad to see you had the intestinal fortitude to kill off the husbands and feature some strong females here. There were a lot of tough women down under back then.Good on ya!

Look forward to the third in this series.

Recommned it to all that like a good story a bit of history and yes a bit of romance.

Bringing History to Life!

After reading Portrait of an Unknown Woman I couldn't wait to read Figures in Silk, and I wasn't disappointed. Vanora Bennett's masterful weaving of fact and fiction brought the era and historical characters to life, leaving the reader desperate for more. I was torn between sympathy and loathing for Richard III as his character unfolded in an attempt to unveil the man behind the traditionally assumed atrocities he committed to gain the throne but mostly I was fascinated by the lives of the silk women and the merchants in London, which showed a hive of industry and trade that I'd never thought of as an interesting part of fifteenth century England before now! Captivating - can't wait for Blood Royal!

Unturnoffable!

Loved this audiobook, had already read Portrait of an Unknown Woman and was not disappointed by this offering, evokes the necessary atmosphere required for a historical novel without losing any of the story.

Amazing

It's hard to contain my enthusiasm about this book. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment's listening. Totally recommended.

An Unexpected Treasure

After a difficult beginning this expertly read story ( talented reader ) unfolds into a mesmerising lyrical few hours of absolute listening bliss. The story unfolds of a relationship between a woman (the chief protagonist) and the future King Richard the Third, about whom I knew little apart from his existence and all the information acquired from Shakespeare's play which is a wonderful piece of propoganda and set towards the latter stage of the King's life. The relationship between the entire royal family, spouses and relatives was all put into context for me and I ended up despising some parts of the character of Richard and overwhelmingly sympathetic at the same time in this unusual novel which fills gaps with possible and plausible situations whilst concentrating on the chief character's life. A truly well constructed and expertly read story from an author I had not prevously heard of and upon whom I took a risk that turned out to be well worth it

A classic adventure story!

You have to love the opening line in this classic adventure story from 1937: âThe doomed city of Shunkien poured flame-torn billows of smoke skyward to hide the sun.â A great line like that hooks you into the story and sets the pace for the rollicking adventure to follow. L. Ron Hubbard was a master of such great openings in his stories, and âOrders is Ordersâ is no exception. This is the story about Marine Gunnery Sergeant James Mitchell and private first class Spivits who are ordered to conduct a treacherous supply mission and reach some trapped Americans in the besieged city of Shunkien. Hubbardâs descriptive powers and strong characterization are all in evidence here. The story is one of his toughest, gritty but not without a heart. Hubbardâs classic fiction is always a joy to read and I enjoyed this one immensely. Plenty of suspense and believable characters in a tight situation make this a really fun one to read. Recommended!

This is as good as pulp literature ever gets

As pulp literature goes, this is as good as it gets. Prior to being swallowed alive by his ego, L. Ron Hubbard had a magical touch for writing captivating adventure stories, where the characters come alive and the story flows as if events were unfolding before the reader. The setting is especially interesting in this case as it takes place during the invasion of China by Japan prior to World War II.

A Great Read.

A great story. I was taken by how vivid the scenes are: the cities, the war, the characters etc. come to mind with easy clarity. I generally don't like the short story format - I read this fast and thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt transported back to a point in history and a short few days where desperate acts and the confusion of war meet. Where the simplicity of following orders is a monumental task.
