    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
It is 1919. The Great War has ended, but the Spanish flu epidemic is raging across Australia. Schools are closed, state borders are guarded by armed men, and train travel is severely restricted. There are rumours it is the end of the world. In the NSW town of Flint, Quinn Walker returns to the home he fled ten years earlier when he was accused of an unspeakable crime. Aware that his father and uncle would surely hang him, Quinn hides in the hills surrounding Flint. There, he meets the orphan Sadie Fox - a mysterious young girl who seems to know more about the crime than she should. A searing gothic novel of love, longing and justice, Bereft is about the suffering endured by those who go to war and those who are forever left behind.

I think I would buy anything read by Dan Wyllie.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The story is engrossing. Dan Wyllie's timing and expressive telling brings every book I have heard him reading as alive as seeing a movie.
Bereft is rich in language and story
If you could sum up Bereft in three words, what would they be?
    deep, wise and courageous
What other book might you compare Bereft to and why?
A little like Tim Winton's Breath as it takes you to the dark places of what it means to be alive.
What about Dan Wyllies performance did you like?
Dan Wyllie gives voices to the ordinary people, to the unpretentious raw Australian voice.
If you could rename Bereft, what would you call it?
    Just a little alive
    Any additional comments?
Chris Womersley has written a classic, the writing is luminous, it shimmers and sparkles as the narrative unfolds. Listen with patience and you will be rewarded
Mystic references detract from good tale.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book with reservations. An interesting story of the return of a decorated soldier to his childhood home town in outback NSW uncertain as to whether he is returning for revenge or revelation. The tale has references to WW1 experiences and is based around family life in a country town in Australia. The implied contacts through a medium and the heroin seeming to have knowledge she could only obtain from a dead girl are passages that are unecessary and distract rather than advance the plot.
Would you recommend Bereft to your friends? Why or why not?
Would recommend the book with reservations. Those reservations are the need to have the ability to suspend belief to accept that messages are recieved from a dead person.
What three words best describe Dan Wyllies voice?
Very pleasant voice with expressive tones, especially in the passages where there was an element of mysticism.
Do you think Bereft needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. Story is essentially the battle between good and evil. Good having won with the death of the embodiment of evil, there seems little to follow up. It is also a good way to finish a story, the main characters disappearing into the sunset, without it necessarily pointing to a sequal.
    Any additional comments?
This is not a book for those who are sceptical about magic or messages from the dead!
    Bereft
I absolutely loved this book and Dan Wyllie's reading of it. Beautiful carefully crafted prose, and a gripping story with a lingering impact. I can't stop thinking about it, and I need to read a hard copy now so relish the language all over again, and work out some of the unresolved questions left at the end.

    Great read!
In TEXAS PRIDE, the fourth book in the Creed Series by Larry Names, Creed's post Civil War adventures continue as he travels down to New Orleans and back up to Kentucky where he organized a horse race in the remote area. His travels took several twists and turns caused mostly by a new enemy. Through all the struggles and drama, the story has quite a surprising end.
True to form, Larry included some action, some mystery, and a touch of romance. The characters and events draw you into their world from long ago as the story line is fiction wrapped around actual events and places. This is a must read for those that like western novels. This real life believability makes this series stand out.
I can't wait to crack open #5, MISSOURI GUNS.

Newspaper woman falls in love with her boss nephew.
This was the second book I read by this author. It was a very interesting book. Mindy had many men in her life. First her dad, her brothers and her boss at the newspaper also her beau Judson. All treated her very different. Then she spread her wings and went out to Colorado there she met her boss at the newspaper Byron then Taylor and Wade. She thought she had a loving relationship with Wade but he was crook. She was just friends with Taylor though I'm sure he wanted more. Mindy made her way as a newspaper reporter then an editor. Taylor was also her protector during this time. After Byron suddenly past away his nephew Lawrence came into the picture. Mindy helped him with many things this caused a love to grow between them. This was the man Mindy had waited for.
    Mother's day gift
I bought these for my mom, she loves them.
    Undaunted
A good afternoon's read. It was a believable story of a woman who overcame difficulties and led an interesting life.
One of the Best Books I Ever Read
The characters in this book are great. I like a woman who is trying something new, which is what the heroine does in this book. I highly recommend this book.

A worthy read for Louis L'Amour fans
Stan Lynde paints pictures with words even better than Louis L'Amour and his characters and the settings come across authentically and engagingly. Excellent read for those who like a little mining history thrown in with their Westerns, and a great characterization of Butte, MT as it must have been in the early copper mining days.
    Good fun to read these
I purchased this on audible.com because the author is such a good reader, too. Fun to read this series about early day Montana.
Stan Lynde delivers another spellbinding western novel.
As a long time fan of Mr. Lynde's western fiction I have been anxiously awaiting his latest novel and having now devoured "To Kill a Copper King" I'm temporarily satisfied.
This is something of a departure for Mr. Lynde in that the mystery aspects of the story are emphasized to a greater extent than previous novels starring Merlin Fanshaw. That's not to say that character development or action suffer, far from it. Mr. Lynde has crafted a novel that is full of interesting and realistic characters who draw you in and make you care about their fates.
The atmosphere and wonderful descriptions of Montana in 1888 are vibrant and paint such a detailed and fascinating picture that you'll feel like you're there. You won't be disappointed.

A.D. 1262: In the dusty heat of French fields, knights battle for supremacy in a fierce tournament. At its violent heart is Edward of England, who leads his men under the banner of the dragon, a potent reference to the legendary King Arthur. As heir to the throne, Edward has a vision for his future kingdom a vision sprung from the words of an ancient prophecy written in the time of Arthur himself that will change the face of Britain forever.
A.D. 1286 Scotland is in the grip of the worst winter in living memory. Some say the Day of Judgement has come. The king of Scotland rides out from Edinburgh into the stormy dark. On the road he is murdered by one of his own men, leaving the succession to the throne wide open. The kings death is as a stone thrown into a pool, the ripples spreading far and wide. Civil war threatens as powerful Scottish families jostle for power, not knowing that Edward, now king of England, has set his own plans in motion. But all is not destined to go Edwards way. Through the ashes of war, through blood feuds and divided loyalties, a young squire will rise to defy Englands greatest king. His name is Robert the Bruce. And his story begins in Insurrection.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent history
I have read Robyn Young's series on the Templars, with rather mixed feelings, as she can be very wordy, so I thought I would try her new novel as a talking book.
The book is set in the period of Edward I, 'The Hammer of the Scots', and deals with the quelling of insurrection in Wales, and in Scotland. (Edward was inclined to feel that Scotland should not be an independent kingdom). It is a time when Scottish lords were often Norman barons, owning lands in Scotland and England, with very divided loyalties. It is the period of King John Baliol, William Wallace and the main character of this book, Robert the Bruce.
It moves backwards and forwards in time to explain the development of the situation, and this can at times be confusing, but as you get into the book, this becomes clearer.
The gore is not spared! This was a time when the north of England was left as a wasteland-a scorched eart policy with a vengeance. It isn't how one thinks of 'chivalrous knights'. After the battle of Stirling Bridge, Wallace ordered 'No quarter', and the English were horrified to find this meant that the knights weren't spared for ransom as was usual. Yet this was done to avenge the thousands of civilians Edward had ordered killed when Berwick was taken.
The development of the character of Robert the Bruce from a lad, at odds with his father, is well drawn. He has a claim to the Scots throne through his descent from Malcolm Canmore, but other than feeling aggrieved that Edward supports Baliol, does not see for a long time that he is failing in his duty by not supporting Scottish independence.
It is a thought provoking book about a period that is little known to English readers, although I seem to have read quite a bit over the years as I live in this 'debateable land'
Nick McArdle does a wonderful job as the narrator-very important when you are listening for over 20 hours.
    Looking forward to part 2
Really enjoyed the story. This is a period of history that I do not know much about. Very well written and narrated. More of the same please!
    Amazing!!
Since listening to the first book three or four years ago I have been waiting eagerly for the final instalment of this trilogy.

    Publisher's Summary:
At the beginning of World War II, 12-year-old Nora Lynch is one of thousands of London children sent away to the safety of the English countryside. Her surrogate family, Reverend and Mrs. Rivers and their daughter, Grace, are like no one she has ever met, offering shelter, affection, and the sister she never had. But Nora is too young and too naive to understand the cracks beneath the surface of her idyllic new life at the rectory or the disappointments of the Riverses' marriage. And as her friendship with Grace grows more intense, she aches to become even closer.
What happens next is a secret that she keeps for more than 50 years, a secret that she can begin to reveal only when, elderly and alone, Nora knows that she is close to the end.
A beautiful meditation on love, friendship, and family, Days of Grace is a stunning debut that brings a tumultuous era to life. Nora tells her story in alternating chapters from the past and present, projecting her childhood nostalgia with a cinematic glow.

    Book group
I read this for our Daytona Beach book group. It was fine (do you feel the but coming?) but I found it a bit odd. The characters were not well fleshed out and left you feeling them as not complete.
    A Kindleobsessed Review
I'm fairly certain this is the first time I have been completely clueless as to how to start my review. My normal banter seems wildly inappropriate, yet focusing entirely on the gloom, I feel will have an adverse effect.
When I first read the slip cover for "Days of Grace" I picked up two very distinctive things,
    1. Struggling with the affects of war through the eyes of a 12 year old girl
    2. Experiencing the inner turmoil of a lost love
but when it was all said and done, when I closed the back cover, and switched off the light, it occurred to me that what I got was so much more.
Troubled with the idea of loosing her daughter unnecessarily to war, Nora's mother does the unthinkable... offers her up as an evacuee, and plops her on a train bound for the country, however, what her mother sees as a selfless act of sacrifice, Nora saw as abandonment. Unsure of herself (or her surroundings) Nora's mind starts to run wild, that is until she meets Grace. As a girl who is used to running free (and getting her way) Grace teaches Nora a whole world of things she never knew existed... books, beauty, and love... but when Nora's love continues to go unrequited, and her life suddenly starts to take a direct left, the place that she lovingly started to refer to as home, is not so welcoming anymore. In an effort to escape an unhealthy situation, and take control of her own future, Nora decides to runaway. With Grace, dutifully by her side, the two girls set out to experience the other side of life... the war torn, desolate streets of London. Will their love for each other be enough to battle the forces around them, will the shady side of their new home tear them apart, and will Nora ever accomplish the most challenging feat of all... forgiving herself for the things she has done for love?
"Catherine Hall" did exactly the opposite of what I expected in this novel... she focused on the negative. This story was not about WWII, or even an enduring friendship for that matter, what is was... was a story about a young girl so desperate for a family, that her own conscience created a mutilated web of abandonment issues, and internal punishment.

    Unfulfilled
I've got a sweet spot for this author and look forward to more books, but this one didn't have a satisfactory ending to me, but that could just be my taste. Very detailed and engaging...
    What happened to the end?
Story brilliant but ending very abruptly! Such a shame as it spoiled it. Unless it was a mistake in the recording.

    Publisher's Summary:
Evelyn is a young woman who has defied convention to become one of the country's pioneer female lawyers. Living at home with her mother, aunt, and grandmother, Evelyn is still haunted by the death of her younger brother, James, in the First World War. Therefore, when the doorbell rings late one night and a woman appears claiming to have mothered James's child, Evelyn's world is turned upside down.
Evelyn distrusts Meredith at first, but she also finds that this new arrival challenges her work-obsessed lifestyle. So far, her legal career has not set the world alight. But then two cases arise that make Evelyn realize that perhaps she can make a difference. The first concerns a woman called Leah Marchant, whose children have been taken away from her simply because she is poor. In the second case, Stephen Wheeler - a former acquaintance of Daniel Breen, her boss - has been charged with murdering his own wife. It is clear to Breen and Evelyn that Wheeler is innocent, but he won't talk.
After being humiliated in court, Evelyn is approached by the dashing lawyer Nicholas Thorne. She is needled by his privileged background and old-fashioned attitudes, but, despite being engaged, he cannot seem to resist sparring with this feisty young female. In the meantime, Meredith makes an earth-shattering accusation about James. With the Wheeler case coming to a head and her heart in limbo, Evelyn takes matters into her own hands.

McMahon's historical novels are often complex but extremely rewarding in their depth and character development. Her latest is her best novel to date. (Library Journal)

At the center of the conflict is mail-order diagnosis, which flourished until the U.S. mail fraud statutes of 1908.
