Realizing when your life isn't all that bad

A super cute story of two teens who travel back into civil war days to experience real living. CJ who complains that her life at home is bad because she had to take of the house while her mom works, quickly sees what life is like to scavenge for food to eat and make due with little when the armies clean out the homes in the south. Jacob thinks he wants to leave his sleepy home of Broken Branch by joining the army, but after he is forced to partake in fighting with the south he decides his decision may not fit him.

Fun Story

The Unexpected Performance is an Unexpected fun story. I latched on to it because I like time travel stories. But this one took me to Civil War which I wasn't sure I would like but I did. In fact, I believe the main shortcoming of this story is that it's too short. I would have liked the story to go deeper into the characters dealing with the situation of the Civil War landscape and all it's sweeping trials and tribulations....perhaps even following the 20th Century male character through the war-torn Civil War era... and then having the main female lead have to try to find him... sort of like 'Cold Mountian'. Still, I liked it for the short story that it is. I thought it is also clever how they are modern day actors having to apply their skills to survive in the 18th century.

Really different.

I really enjoyed this book. it was altogether different than what I expected. time travel adventure. Narration was good not too many characters to follow.

A bit of a mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of historical fiction, and a bit of time travel. Kids learn life lessons when they unexpectedly end up back in Civil War times. Nice quick listen with some twists in the plot.

The narration was well done. The characters were excellently portrayed.

Absolutely Wonderful

I do not understand why Dominion did not become an instant classic. It should be required reading for all middle school students. Baker is a talented author who has put a fresh spin on the American classic, a family saga set in early America. Baker is not afraid to exhibit flawed male characters even when it is politically incorrect. Nor is this book about Black Americans. This book is about all Americans, but more importantly it is about the American story. As sure as to Kill a Mocking Bird is a part of the American fabric, I find myself wondering if with a little more restraint and white characters whether or not this book would have become required reading for all.

Outstanding!

Dominion is a wonderfully imagined novel set in Colonial America at the cusp of the Revolutionary War. The story focuses on freedman Jasper Merian, his sons (Magnus and Purchase), and grandson (Caleum). The story opens with a young, anxious, and ambitious Jasper arriving in untamed Carolina territory with nothing but his drive and determination to earn enough money to purchase his enslaved family (Ruth and son, Magnus) from the Virginia plantation he left behind. He is sold "cursed" land that the locals shun because of the roaming anathema, Ould Lowe (or is it really Old Love?), whose banshee-like howls echo against the mountains and is heard for miles. He battles the demon and banishes it to the bottom of the lake and moves forward to conquer the land with backbreaking labor and an unconquerable vision of utopia. He is met with a myriad of challenges, but succeeds slowly to mold the land into a profitable farm where tobacco flourishes. When he realizes he needs a helpmeet, he seeks a wife initially for convenience. After a short courtship, he marries an older widow, fathers a son, and names his estate Stonehouses.

Baker cleverly ties the legacy of the Merian men to that of Stonehouses; their choices in life have direct bearing on their families and the estate. Jasper, Purchase, Magnus, Caleum are full-bodied noble characters, each wonderfully broken, succumbing to their passions and hiding their wounds from heartbreak deep within their souls. The author builds a rich community of friends, neighbors, and enemies around these four key characters. It is through their interrelationships that the social climate and attitude of the day, rules of courtship and class structure, complexities of the pre-Revolution political climate, the pain and cruelties of slavery, the hypocrisy of unjust slave laws, and the hard living and dying of man and beast alike are revealed.

Dramatic, Clean, Inspirational Romance

I enjoyed the story of Honor and Joshua. The trauma that Honor must endure is terrible. First losing her parents and brothers on the way to America, leaving her to care for her young sister. Being pelted in a destructive hail storm. I won't share any more of her traumas for fear of spoilers. Through it all, Honor learned to trust the Lord with everything. Joshua learned this lesson too, to trust the Lord with even the small things.

How Honor gets her quilt is an amazing tale!

I think this would be a good listen for anyone who likes the Revolutionary period or anyone who likes a good clean romance.

The narration seemed a little stiff and slow at first. I upped the speed and it was a bit better.

Wonderful!

Enjoyed the narration is this series immensely! A delight in writing, writing, story and narration I enjoyed and I listen to over and over again!

Great Series

Really nice listen. I have listened to all four books in the series and they flowed so well it could have been one big book. Nothing earth shattering but I was hooked on getting to know what happened with each of the characters. Thoroughly enjoyed the series.

Pride in the Shadows

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is ripe for a noir thriller. Being on the right side of history doesn't mean there isn't drama behind the scenes. In "Our Man in the Dark," John Estem is an underdog, a man with a limp from polio, an accountant left on the periphery and resentful of it. When he embezzles from the organization, the FBI pounces, and they have a new informant. Our antihero struggles through a moral maze for the rest of the story.

J. D. Jackson is perfectly cast as the narrator. He brings an emotive delivery that has you, too, looking over your shoulder.

I love that this Civil Rights Era thriller is ambiguous. There are bad guys on both sides and it's as noir as they get. Egos get bruised, pride stands in for wisdom, and everyone has something to hide.

Who knew?

One doesn't often make a connection between Jews and China except of course when it comes to eating Chinese food on Christmas. This story helped me understand a lot about what life may have been like for the Jews who found refuge in China to escape the nazi regime. It also gave me a lot more insight into Chinese history as well. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions except when it came to details of severed limbs and such. I had trouble reading the many gory details. Overall this is a fantastic read.

Another Book, Please, Ma'am

I won't go into what this book is about. Enough people will tell you that. What I will say is that a book recommended by Pat Conroy and Dorothy Allison can't go wrong and THE LOST SAINTS OF TENNESSEE proved that to be true. I mostly read fiction about people's lives so this book was perfect for me. It pulled me back every time I put it down to sleep or eat or go to work. I wanted to keep reading it and so I did. The words flow like a lazy southern river, taking you along on an interesting, enjoyable trip. If you like southern fiction, this will not disappoint you.

A very enjoyable read!

I ran across a review by the author Pat Conroy for this book in a Facebook ad, and decided to buy it. I can see why he would recommend it, because the settings, and even the style are very much like his own, and he's one of the best! You are drawn into the main character, Ezekiel, immediately. He's a middle aged man whose twin brother was killed in a drowning...which threw him into a depression and ruined his marriage. So he is ready for suicide and leaves his small Tennessee town to do the deed. He goes to Virginia to an elderly aunt's house, and finds a reason to live again. His dysfunctional mother, selfish ex-wife, troubled teenaged daughters, and the uncle with Alzheimer's disease all come to play and make for an inspiring and entertaining story that everyone can find a familiarity with, especially a southerner. Great read for the beach or passing the time. Pat Conroy knows his stuff!

Glad that's finished

Struggled to finish this, longest drawn out tale yet, why repeat some ones name over and over again when they have five to seven names.

This is book 2 of a three book series. And all three are equally good, as they chart the rise and fall (well death) of Maximinus from various points of view from the citizens of Rome, to the eastern reaches of the Empire. To the wars on the frontiers. A complex tale is nicely created with both tragic and heroic moments. I would recommend all three to anyone.

Also as they are set a few years before the writers "Warrior of Rome" series they form a prequel of sorts with Ballista playing quite a pivotal role in book 3 of this series.
