Enjoy Geraldine O'Neill books - this was a good light-hearted story but not her best.
Geraldine O'Neill has done it again...great read!
Loved Geraldine O'ONeill's newest book. Have read all her others and this one didn't disappoint. The story of a family in Tullamore Ireland drew me in from the beginning to the end!
    Good, readable book!
Geraldine O'Neill is one of my favorite authors. She manages to bring her characters to life in a way that the reader can feel almost like they are personal friends. There is believable drama and conflict, and positive outcome too. A Letter to America was my first O'Neill read, and I was hooked! I've gone on to read more of her works, and am always searching for more!
    more Geraldine Please
Excellent. Wishing that more of Geraldine O'Neill's books were available on kindle. This book while just bit predictable it rang so true with the typical Irish family...not demonstrative emotionally...strong female characters and minor history lessons...this Irish lass enjoyed it immensely.

Another wonderful read from Geraldine O'Neill! I didn't want to leave the characters!

    The whispering swirled about Lidoire
    But nothing reached her father's ears;
For none would risk his wrath to tell
Come true had one of his greatest fears
One autumn in medieval Provence, a nobleman's only daughter finds herself mysteriously pregnant. The girl, Lidoire, has never lain with a man and wonders if she, like the Virgin Mary, has conceived immaculately.
Years earlier, her father betrothed her to the powerful prince of Navarre; through the marriage, he hopes to further his own ambitions. In her father's castle, Lidoire fearfully watches her belly grow until Moreau - her father's vintner, a man who's always been like a loving uncle - comes to her. He offers to hide her in a wilderness hermitage through the winter, so she might return in the spring with the baby. The sight of his beloved daughter returned with his grandchild on her breast, Moreau hopes, will abate the sure to be terrible anger of Lidoire's father.
But Moreau's plans are more than what they seem, and in the wilderness Lidoire makes a decision that will reveal the shocking truth of her pregnancy, a decision whose repercussions will be felt from the idyllic, sun-drenched vineyards of southern France to the bloody battlefield outside the Holy City of Jerusalem.
Set in the time of the First Crusade (1096-1099), The Ballad of St. Lidoire is a tale of love and betrayal, the vicissitudes of time, and the messy way in which saints are sometimes created.

A story of justice through the ages...and revenge.
Germany, 1945. The bloodiest war in history is at an end. Now the retribution and search for justice begin. In a series of Nuremberg trials, war criminals are hanged or commit suicide. Others are judged and sent to prison for their parts in the most heinous crimes of all time.
But in the final trial, one in which ordinary Germans are forced to confront their complicity, a leading American defense counselor has to consider questions of good and evil when he defends a simple mechanic, a man who kept the gas chambers in working order. As his trial progresses, Wilhelm Deutch, a Nazi mechanic within the concentration camps, is forced by a court to confront his past with nobody to speak on his behalf. Only one man, Joachim Gutman, a Jewish survivor of Auschwitz - a living hell, the worst of all the concentration camps - knows the truth. Gutman knows that Deutch was a lifesaving hero, not another sadistic villain, as those who barely survived the camps claim him to be at the trial. To save Deutch from a certain death sentence, Gutman must come forward to testify on his behalf, but he's nowhere to be found.
Half a century later, it falls to the defense counselor's granddaughter, a young and brilliant lawyer, to correct a grievous miscarriage of justice and ease the moral conscience of Germany. But has there been a miscarriage of justice? As she delves deeper into the evil Nazi past, she is faced with a conundrum that threatens her very sanity.

    A great read
I loved the multiple perspectives in this book. The plot moved forward rapidly--very engaging. When I was done reading it, I continued reflecting on it for weeks. I am not related to the author.
    Difficult to Read, but Good
I was expecting a very different book from the one I read, âThe Mechanicâ by Alan Gold. This book was difficult for me to read because of the subject matter. It begins as Theodore Broderickâs family comes together for his funeral. Justice Broderick had a very successful life as a judge and Supreme Court Justice. His granddaughter, Chasca finds a manuscript that was in her grandfatherâs possession that seems to mitigate the death sentence of a Nazi sentenced during the Nuremberg Trials in 1946. Chasca is determined to find the family of William Deutch, share the manuscript, and find a way to honor this man, who by all accounts was not the depraved Nazi that he was tried and sentenced for. I found this difficult to read because of the graphic description of life as a prisoner of Auchwitz, Birkenau, Belsen and Sachenhausen concentration camps.
The manuscript found in Justice Broderickâs possessions after his death seems to exonerate William Deutch, known as The Mechanic. His job at these camps was to see that the crematorium furnaces worked efficiently and continuously. The writings of Joachim Gutman describe Deutch as a decent German citizen caught up in the fanatic Nazi movement against the Jews. Gutman was a prisoner in the camps and was taken under Deutchâs wing and saved from starvation and death by his humanitarian actions. He was said to have saved many lives in this manner. Lawyer Broderick was a defense lawyer during the Nuremberg Trials and believed that Deutch may not have been the monster he was purported to be. Follow this story as it leads us through the years and through the memories of Joachim Gutman and William Deutch.

Her tiny village in the north east of Spain is a world away from the tensions beginning to overspill in other parts of the country, but when her brother José returns from working in a nearby town, brimming with anarchic zeal, Montse is captivated. Swept away by the fervour of the revolution, caught between love, family and honour, her sheltered life will be abruptly changed forever.

In the year of 1845, the country of Ireland was struck with the great potato famine. Devastating the main food source of the common man, causing hundreds of thousands to starve to death. In 1847, the English government, overwhelmed with the starving Irish, decided to unburden itself by relocating over two and a half million Irish people to America. Wish it were better written.
The story line and characters kept me interested. However, the book should have been edited a few more times. Anachronistic language about ruined it for me (characters are described as "freaking out" and a general "has a hard on" for a soldier he hates and wants to bring to ruin.) There were numerous others like these 2 examples. Add to that the misspelling of Rebbels and Rebbs early in the book that suddenly gets corrected later in the book. The chapters shift among characters and could use some transition to help the reader. And lastly, the author switches from omniscient 3rd person to 1st person within a single sentence at times throughout the book. The end of the novel (when 2 long-lost brothers find each other in battle) was a little trite. It also felt like the author had grown tired of writing or had a page limit in mind and thus summarized the fates of the numerous characters in an epilogue. The historical aspects of the novel seemed adequately researched and didn't dominate the story but rather complimented it.
A great story told by a great story teller
A great story told by a great story teller. This is a very well researched historical novel that takes the reader through the extraordinary trials, tribulations, losses, loves, fortune and misery of the Kelly family who is determined to leave abject poverty in Ireland for a better life in pre-civil war America. Lizzi's knack for putting the reader into the story through his ability to describe the historical setting, whether in the hold of a transport ship crossing the Atlantic, at a slave auction in New Orleans or on the battlefield in Gettysburg kept me up too late not able to put down my Kindle. The characters really make the epic story believable as Lizzi does a great job blending lovable characters with scoundrels appropriate for the times as well as a great mix of reluctant heroes and people just trying to survive to allow the reader to relate personally.
The Potato Eaters is a marvelous story woven into American ...
The Potato Eaters is a marvelous story woven into American history with flair and humor. Mr. Lizzi captures the pain and struggles of early immigrants as they adapt to the land of plenty. Unfortunately, they do so during a time of discourse (the Civil War). I learned things that I probably should have known, but didn't.

    Too Much
I stumbled on this book after watching Matt's sailing channel on YouTube. The background of Monaco is interesting as is the idea of a rich pre-jetset American who is so wealthy he has not a care in the world. However, the constant drinking of the main character will surely kill him soon as he gets drunk on an almost daily basis. I was kinda of expecting some more intrigue really. Nick's boat is never really described either. Aurelia is an interesting girl but way too young for Nick really. Warren is going to have a lot of angry father's with pregnant daughters chasing after him. He seems to like them underage and is a disgusting man. I feel like I over paid for the book and ebook. The reader of the ebook is an older man who reads the story with a choppy style.
    I really enjoyed reading.
spellbind tale! I really enjoyed reading.
    Beautiful writing, great read.
Fantastic first novel by Matt Raskie. His writing is rich, filled with beautiful descriptions of Monaco and the French coast, scenes of the novel. Nick, the main character, is enigmatic and framed well by Raskie's incisive and subtle word-smithing. Good stuff and definitely recommend.

At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier | Summary & Analysis
    Preview:
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier tells the story of the Goodenough family. The year is 1838, and James and Sadie Goodenough are fighting about apple trees again. The couple has lived for nine years in Ohio's Black Swamp, a dank, moldy, muddy place where it's difficult to farm and live. When the two arrived from Connecticut, they had to build a cabin and clear the entire plot.
James and Sadie are struggling. Their closest neighbors are miles away. They are in debt. They no longer feel tenderly towards each other. Almost every year they have lost a child to swamp fever, an illness caused by mosquitoes. Only five of their 10 children remain: Robert, Martha, Sal, Caleb, and Nathan.
The couple is fighting because James wants to graft 10 "spitter" trees into "eater" trees, to produce apples for eating rather than for making applejack spirits...

History through the leaves of one family tree
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier is a story of the Goodenough family, Connecticut transplants to Ohioâs Black Swamp. The husband and wife argue over their apple trees. He wants to graft them to increase the production of edible fruit, while she wants to keep what they have to make more Apple Jack for her own consumption. In the midst of this, their surviving children grow up with little in the way of familial attention, and except for son, Robert, with little in the way of interests. Robert, though, has inherited his fatherâs love of trees, which serves as a thread throughout the story.
Summary of At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier by Instaread is an excellent analysis of this novel about a dysfunctional family in America of the 1830s and 40s, the time of Manifest Destiny and Americaâs march to the Pacific. An excellent overview of the history and culture of the country told through the experiences of one family.
Like most Instaread summaries, this one gives a good peek inside the book before you have to make the full investment.

    Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:
Endlich komplett!
