Enjoyable and captivating book. Loved it!

Marion Hatley was such an enjoyable book with great depth and with such richness on so many levels. It is one of those books that throughout the work-day I couldn't wait to get home so I could get back to reading it. All of the characters were very well written, but the title character, Marion Hatley, was strong, complex and multidimensional. Her story was so achingly realistic that as I was reading it, I felt Marion might have been someone I knew or wished I knew. Marion and her story was so engrossing, you felt an immediate connection, sympathy and at times even annoyance and confusion; you know, like a real person. She draws you into her story immediately. The time-period, the place, and the lingerie and work were described with such an authority in that they were all integral parts of the books and as if each--setting, time-period, vocations--each in their own way are strong characters, too. In summary, this is an exceedingly well written book.

Lovely story, beautifully told

I loved this poignant, thought-provoking tale about a flawed and sympathetic heroine. Marion Hatley's struggles--and those of the other women characters who don't fit conveniently into their society's "box"--ring especially true for the time period (early 1930's in a rural town in Pennsylvania), but resonate even today. The descriptions of sewing and Marion's personal style are wonderful.I was rooting for her throughout the story, maybe especially because she doesn't pity herself, or bemoan her unfair circumstances. She gets on with life and graciously brings along those in need of a fresh start, like Marion herself.

Redemption Strong

Marion Hatley reads like Sister Carrie in reverse. Where Dreiser took the girl from the country to the city, Castrodale gives Marion her escape TO the country.

Bring back the 60's attitude!

"So what happens next?" I actually asked myself when I finished A Thousand Stones. Yes all the story lines played out beautifully and it had a great ending...but I can tell that the main character, Nate, is going more places, having more adventures I want to follow. Then I read that the author does have a "next in the series" book in the works, so that is good. I like his writing style...free-wheeling, like Bob Dylan, I'm thinking......Because the book makes you think back to Dylan, The Beatles, all kinds of 60's Attitudes....not people, Attitudes! I could really relate to Charlie's girlfriend. Women today who think they are so "women's lib" have no clue what the pioneers were really like. So, if you are in the mood for a nostalgic, easy reading story, you'll like it. Not just a 'summer read' - the true history the author includes makes you think. Really enjoyed it.

Not worth the time

This very short drama in three acts describes Leonardo inducing Mona Lisa to sit for her portrait, ten years later still retouching and polishing his masterpiece, and then on his deathbed, dying with his eyes still glued to La Gioconda. I don't know what should I have expected, considering the fact that so many tons of verbiage have been written about the iconic painting. Perhaps new insight into Leonardo's mind, or a novel explanation why this painting became one of the few symbols of the entire Western culture? The problem with the play- it failed to move me. It is filled with cliches and sententious musings about beauty, love, sex, and homosexuality. One redeeming sentence: "Life hurts all the time and kills at the last moment". Well, how different and original is it from "Life's a bitch and you die in the end." Sadly, not worth the time of day (or night for that matter).

This story was more a presentation of the authors poems than story. The story would happen then a poem about what just happened would come next. So you got the same thing twice. The narrator was good for this western and helped move the story along. I could have used more story and less poems. I got this ARC via audiobook boom

China Doll

A short story of a mail order bride coming to America.An ok story but the narration by Kevin Iggens needs some work.His reading is like listening to an 8th grader read.I was given this book free by the author, narrator or publisher.

This was a fun story about a western gentleman and his mailorder bride from China. It was a sweet story about a couple coming together from different worlds and making every effort for their happy ever after. This audiobook was recieved via Audiobook Boom, at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.

A Clean Mail Order Bride Short Story

China Doll was a pretty good story. The story itself was believable as there were mail order brides back in those days. I thought the story, by Gregory "Doc" Patton was well-written. I enjoy listening to mail order bride audiobooks. They're relaxing and not too complex, I'm not sure the narration was there for this story though.

Kevin Iggens' narration seemed monotone. I would've liked to hear more voice inflections and feelings to reflect the characters of Bob and Luong. He kept a steady pace, I'm just not sure the narration matched the book well.

A good day's read

Hanna Street centers around a neighborhood past its prime and the people who lived there in its best years. The fact that they have all grown old, grown up, or moved on, does not mean the end of their friendships. To the contrary, they have remained irrevocably entangled in one another's lives in the most charming way. The problems of one are the problems of all, no matter how much they attempt to have private lives.

What I like best about this story is that it's relayed in the conversational tone with terrific attention to detail and entertaining commentary along the way. 'Like a talkative neighbor has stopped by for coffee and is telling such a good story that reader/host simply has to put on a second pot and invite them to stay longer. In "Hanna Street" we see the family unit at its gory best: all the personalities and drama and heart break and shared joys and tribulations and love, and subterfuge, and--yes--even murder--but in an everyday (?) fashion--the way it happens to real people. If you like tales about women at their strongest and weakest and how we can carry one another--this story is for you. And--guys--if you want to know what we women do when you're not around and what makes us so darned interesting--you might want to check this one out too.

Hanna Street Will Hold Your Attention!

The author of Hanna Street has written a story that captivates it's audience! The story is of a young lady going back to her old hometown where things have changed drastically, most neighbors have moved away, and her Grandmother has decided to sell her home and move. Kate has been chosen to see to getting the place cleaned out and disposing of everything.

In the meantime, Kate renews old acquaintances including the boyfriend she left behind. Old memories aren't always pleasant, and all the people aren't all ones with which you want to become re-acquainted.
