Publisher's Summary:
For fans of the Mapmakers trilogy and anyone who likes a little history along with their fantasy, here's a quirky new series!
Magic is real. History is a big, fat lie.
Before Hyacinth Hayward moves from Illinois to London, she reads up on the city's history. Too bad for her. Because the books are wrong. The truth is, London was built on magical rivers, and all the major events in its past have been about people trying to control the magic.
Hyacinth discovers this when her mom is kidnapped. In the chase to get her back, Hyacinth encounters a giant intelligent pig in a bathing suit, a boy with amnesia, an adorable tosher (whatever that is), a sarcastic old lady, and a very sketchy unicorn. Somehow Hyacinth has to figure out who to trust, so she can save her mom and, oh yeah, not cause a second Great Fire of London.

Hyacinth and the Secrets Beneath is such a fun read! Young readers will be rooting for Hyacinth until the last page. A wonderful, witty debut filled with fascinating bits of history. It's London like you've never seen before.
Five Stars
Enchanting!
Magical Fun - but I still want answers
Okay, so, I have questions. Like, lots of questions. Weinstein answers nearly none of them over the course of Hyacinth's story, but I kind of don't care. There are indeed secrets beneath London. Hyacinth uncovers some, but there are certainly many more for her to unearth or bumble across or just plain get wrapped up in because Hyacinth and the Secrets Beneath is an introductory-ish book with spurts of backstory and character development, but almost no sensible answers. I kind of love it anyway. It's snarky fun at times and romping hilarity during other parts, plus, there is a boar named Oaroboarus and I can totally respect that. Had there been more explanations of all the things I had questions about, a huge one being how this magical world actually works instead of reasons given, I would have absolutely given this book a five star rating. As is, there is a lot that Weinstein has to answer in future volumes. It's a sort of magical book. Kids will totally go along for the adventure. Adults will have questions. They will both enjoy Hyacinth and her crazy ride through the underground areas of London... and the magical waters.
Lower, medium, and Hyacinth
There are any number of "kids" books that are fun for the whole family but the vast majority of them do it one of two ways; either they treat serious subjects in a plain spoken (but never childish) way' or they are "schizophrenic" in the sense of being for kids on the surface with a subversive tone underneath for the adults
What is REALLY hard is writing an essentially silly, even wacky, adventure that has both kids AND adults laughing (and "thrilling") at the SAME things; at the same time
Meet Hyacinth
Imagine, if you will... if you CAN... the love-child of Hermione Granger, Flavia de Luce, and Eloise, but with a mind, outlook, and vocabulary all her own
Turn her loose in a magical London that, well, according to SOME never existed and according to OTHERS...
