We love ALL of Kirby Larson's books. Audacity Jones is smart and spirited. Just the kind of girl we love to read about!
is an amazing book. It has many funny
Audacity Jones Steals the Show, is an amazing book. It has many funny, and relatable parts in it that all readers can enjoy. Audacity is a girl who is interested in theatre. She is a quirky little girl, and has many interesting things that help the story develop into a cute, and funny anecdote. I think all ages would enjoy this book because it has a clever storyline, and it has funny scenes, and parts in it that everyone from ages 9-70 would enjoy. I absolutely love Audacity and her personality. She is kind of just like me, in the sense that she has creative ideas, and likes to be outgoing, and fun. She has to manage to save the show, and in the end, the readers will have a treat finding out what happens in Audacity's life. I gave this read 4 stars, because it is a great book, but I wouldnât say that it was one of my favorites.

Thumbs-up for Audie Jones' second book!
When a Kirby Larson ARC of Audacity Jones Steals the Show landed in this librarian's hands, I was overjoyed since my two libraries' copies of her three WWII dog books (Duke, Dash, and Liberty) stay checked out constantly. With great excitement, I dove into Audie Jones' story of Houdini, a school for wayward and/or orphaned girls, mystery and great fun. Audie is a bright, out-going and kind young girl with a tendency to help others and listen to her tingling ear when it tells her that something decidedly wrong is nearby. Her friends are equally interesting and well-developed characters and the setting of their adventures is full of accurate historical detail. After reading this book 2 of Audacity Jones' adventures, I double checked that my libraries already have a copy of book 1, Audacity Jones to the Rescue, and promptly put this book onto my next order. Highly recommended for grades 3-6, but with a reading level of approximately grade 5.
    Audacity Jones Steals the Show
On a multiple choice test, which would you choose?
    a. Kirby Larson's newest book, Audacity Jones Steals the Show (Scholastic, 2017), is about an eleven-year-old girl ("Audie to her friends") who makes an elephant disappear.
    b. Audacity Jones is about Cypher, who in his new job with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, is charged with the duty of keeping an eye on Theo Quinn.

    Wilbur Award winner!
In 1953, Esref Armagan was born completely blind to a poor family in Istanbul, Turkey. He received no formal education, and spent his childhood days in his father's shop where he developed the curiosity to create and draw. He experienced the world through touch, and learned to visually reproduce his surroundings, including color, shadows, and perspective, with his hands. The blind artist's story will be an inspiration to young artists of all abilities.

I read them myself and give them to other children like me. She is a wonderful writer
I'm 80 and I have all of Rachelle's books. I read them myself and give them to other children like me. She is a wonderful writer, tells interesting stories in ways that make reading fun. I plan to buy more of this inspiring book and give them to the local elementary school.
This book is beautifully written, beautifully illustrated
This book is beautifully written, beautifully illustrated, and filled with beautiful examples Esref Armagan's own paintings. It introduces readers to important concepts from the world of art, disability advocacy, and even neuroscience! Fundamentally though, it is an inspiring biography that reiterates the importance of hard work in developing skills, an important lesson for readers of all ages. I highly recommend this wonderful book!
The cover and title reveal just a small portion of this wonderful, encouraging and astonishing story
As a school guidance counselor, I often use my summer break to browse new resources I can use during the next school year. After reading Painting in the Dark by Rachelle Burk, I have given it a place in my Top 10 of elementary school books. The cover and title reveal just a small portion of this wonderful, encouraging and astonishing story. The subject of this biography is Esref Armagan. He is born blind. But he is fascinated and eager, from a very young age, to explore the world around him and find his place of purpose. This story is not just about overcoming severe obstacles and coping with debilitating setbacks. Itâs a lesson in tenacity; making beautiful contributions to a world he will never see. He also shares his blindness and talents with scientists, who use medical technology to discover and document how Esref has sight without using his eyes. Painting in the Dark deserves a prominent display in school art rooms, during instruction of biology and human senses, in curriculum integrating technology and fine arts, childrenâs libraries and in school guidance offices. I recommend it for fourth through sixth grades.
Another high quality children's book from Tumblehome Learning
Parents of advanced readers often ask me for recommendations for their children that challenge them, but is age-appropriate at the same time. Painting in the Dark is just such a book on many fronts. The story of a talented artist who happens to be blind but overcame personal challenges through perseverance and recognition of his talent by others serves as both inspiration and validation for children whose talents are overlooked. It speaks to the twice-exceptional community who struggle with professionals that only see deficits and ignore their individual potential. As an adult who advocates for children and adults like Esref, this book touched my heart in more ways than I can express in a single review.

This story is a gem representing the delightful stories from the Indian subcontinent which capture the simple essence of everyday life in rural/urban India. The simple pleasures of life indicate a time gone by before the advent of cellphones and Facebook, a time which almost stood still, a time where children could revel in the rain, make paper boats and race them down a drain, play marbles and generally pass time.
The once idyllic life almost seems too slow and bear and hence is fascinating to watch unfurl as we listen to the story.

    My daughter loves this series
    My favorite so far
There is a new boarder at Maisieâs grandmotherâs boarding house and, despite his boring exterior, Maisie thinks thereâs something suspicious about Mr. Fred Grange. Not to mention that rash of suspicious laundry thefts. Maybe it all has to do with Charlie Sparrow and his gang of art thieves. Looks like thereâs need for a detective. Fortunately Maisie and her little dog Eddie are on the job.
Iâve been following Maisie for four books now (missed the first) and this is my favorite of the series. It just seems to flow really well and Ms. Webb has done a nice job of laying out the clues just subtly enough that the target audience can guess the outcome without feeling pandered to. I also like the addition of Mr. Grange to the cast. And Maisie herself seems to be growing into her own as both a detective and a bold young lady. The one thing I will note is that in the last book we were given hints about Maisieâs father returning from sea (and possibly taking Maisie away from her grandmother), but absolutely nothing of that is mentioned in this book, which seemed a bit odd.
This series is generally quite appropriate for the target audience of early chapter book reading. The book does not condescend to younger readers, yet there is no concerning content that a parent might worry about. They have a nice, authentic old English feel to them â the setting is both new enough to most readers to be interesting, yet familiar enough to be comfortable. Many of the pages are broken up with line-drawing illustrations that really bring the story to life and help break up the reading for younger readers. Recommended for younger and/or more reluctant readers and, in fact, they make nice light reading for readers of any age.
Marvelous Maisie Makes Solving Mysteries Fun and Funny ...
Living with her grandmother in her London boarding house, Maisie Hitchins has opportunities to interact with all the boarders. She also has opportunities to discover their quirks, foibles, and, if she is lucky, some mystery in which they are involved. Maisie admires the famous detective Gilbert Carrington and wants nothing more than to become a famous detective herself. As in other Maisie Hitchins mysteries, âThe Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins: The Case of the Secret Tunnelâ involves a resident and the newest member of Gran Hitchinsâ boarding house guests. This time, it is Fred Grange, a clerk in a biscuit company and someone Maisie deems to be âboringâ.
Returning on the underground from a wedding along with her Gran and Professor Tobin, Maisie notices a newspaper headline about recent art thefts by the Sparrow Gang. A spate of laundry thefts in the neighborhood and the replacing of stolen clothing with various other clothing, including some red garments, give Maisie the opportunity to solve another mystery.

Eleven-year-old Isabel is a "plain old" girl living in Provincetown, Massachusetts, who believes that she is destined to accomplish something special. When her fifth-grade class goes on a whale-watch field trip, something amazing happens: dozens of different species of whales surround the boat, bumping the deck and sending Isabel flying into the ocean. Isabel is shocked to hear the whales speaking to her - she is a mermaid, they tell her, a "Chosen One" who has the ability to turn from a human into a whale and back again. She is destined to live among the whales long enough to learn their ways and teach them about the human world.

    Great Gift!
bough it as a gift for my girlfriend and she loved it!
    Dive into an exhilarating fantasy
With Isabel, imagine swooping through the ocean with large, friendly whales! Imagine having them understand you (as even your best human friends don't, quite). As she practices living as a whale, Isabel also learns some important human skills as well. This wonderfully playful book rings true in its treatment of a young girl's relationships with friends and teachers and family members, her awakening interest in boys (even if they are boy-whales), and her growth in compassion and awareness.
    my granddaughter loved it
The ages listed for who should read the book were very appropriate. Well written. The material kept her interested and she was anxious to finish the book
    Five Stars
    Great children's book!
    Not just for kids
The two books by Hester Velmans in the whale series - I certainly hope it is a series, with more to follow - are not just for kids. A friend recommended them to me when the second book, Jessaloup's Song, was published, but I would certainly urge one to read Isabel of the Whales as well. Isabel, the main character, is a strong, versatile and mysterious young girl who is besotted with whales. The truth for this is not made apparent until well into the amazing climax of the second book, but it is one exciting ride.
These books, while appealing to youngsters, are satisfying for adult tastes as well. These are books about conflict, powerful emotions, and transformation, as well as addressing some key issues about the planet.
    Well done, Hester Velmans.
    Please write more.
We need to know what happens next to Isabel and Jessaloup.

    Just Like Me
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
My oldest daughter is almost nine years old, so I have recruited her to help me with the middle grade ARCs that I receive from Netgalley. She is a voracious reader, but she tends to gravitate towards comics and graphic novels rather than novels. Reading together gives her the opportunity to expand her repertoire, and I get some great feedback from the target demographic.
We recently read Just Like Me by Nancy Cavanaugh. The story begins with narrator Julia on the bus to sleepaway camp with Avery and Becca, her âChinese sistersâ. The girls were all adopted at the same time from the same orphanage. Avery and Becca live close to each other, get together all the time, and have embraced their Chinese heritage. Julia has been struggling with her identity, and sees herself as half Irish, half Italian like her parents- and half Chinese too.
When the girls arrive at camp, they are placed in the White Oak cabin with Vanessa, a queen bee type; Meredith, who goes along with Vanessa; and Gina, Vanessaâs cousin who likes to joke around. The girls immediately start to fight: Vanessa is very competitive and yells at everyone for not trying hard enough at competitions. The girls get in trouble for fighting, and end up bonding when they realize that everyone is struggling with something. Can they use their strengths to work together and win the big cabin competition?
Many of the chapters end with Juliaâs journal entries. She has been tasked with putting together a journal for the adoption coordinator, and the entries provide the reader with insight into Juliaâs feelings about being adopted. Incidentally, Avery and Becca are also keeping journals, but we are not provided with their entries. Over the course of the book, Juliaâs feelings shift. She is initially resentful at being grouped with Avery and Becca, who she doesnât have as much in common with as people expect her to; just because they came from the same place, they arenât exactly the same.
My daughter enjoyed this book so much that she has asked if she can go away to camp too. She was very surprised by the âmeanâ behavior from some of the characters, and this led to a conversation about what was going on in a particular characterâs background that might make them say mean things.
I also enjoyed this book, and I think it has a lot to offer all children- not just those who might identify with Julia.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the third book in the Teddy Defender series, Ari, Mia, and Brutas discover that teddy bear pirates are trying to ruin Christmas and take over the human world. They're taking all the new teddy bears from stockings and beneath trees, raising an army of these bears, and searching for a treasure that will give them immense power.
It's up to Ari and his friends to find this treasure before the pirates do, rescue Christmas, and save the world.

Cup of Honey or Davy Jones' Locker?
It's christmas time and the teddy bears are worried about being replaced (think Toy Story). When they hear a voice from the stockings, their fears come to fruition and find a little blue bear. Before they know it, there's a crash and pirate Grizzlies take the newcomer away. Do the teddy bears count their blessing? Of course not! Onward ho! and their journey begins.
I read book #2 as an ebook and book #3 as an audiobook. I do have a preference for female narrators, but Michael Gilliland did a fine job. It's not a dramatized audiobook, but he does include some sound effects (dogs barking and pirates singing comes to mind). I liked the story, but I think the climax could have used some work. These bears can get really sneaky. Dousing the honey with cough syrup to put the crew to sleep reminds everyone not to mess with the cook!
I received a free copy from the author for a review.
    Teddy bears, honey, and pirates!
Note: Even though this is Book 3 in the series, it works fine as a stand alone.
Teddy bears Ari and Mia are in for quite the adventure in this story! Its Christmas time and these bears are a little worried about being replaced. Their fears arent to be taken lightly. However, no one expected Grizzly pirates! They came and stole the new bears and now Ari and Mia feel compelled to mount a rescue mission. They must be back before Christmas morning for their kids Rick and Tiffany. So right there we have the makings of a great little adventure danger, the unknown, and a time limit for true success.
The Teddy Defenders (which is primarily Ari, Mia, and Brutas) come up with a plan to track down the pirates and find out what theyre up to with captured bears. Turns out Captain Crab wants to conquer the world! Muuuhhhhahahahaa! Captain Crab might be reaching a little too high, but that doesnt mean we should let him give it a good try. The Teddy Defenders have to figure out who they can trust and who might be swayed to side with them.
Captain Crab is after a treasure that will give the Grizzly pirates great power the Treasure of Cardoz! Theres plenty of swashbuckling and humorous Grizzly pirate swearing (all G rated). The Teddy Defenders feel they must find this treasure first and keep it from the Grizzly pirates. As things unfold, a plot is hatched. Theres honey involved.
Over all, it was a very amusing story. I do believe it is my favorite so far in the series. I loved all the pirate outfits on the Grizzlies and the standoffs and the pirate swearing and the race to find and capture the treasure. As with the previous books, the ending was quite cute and totally fit the story.
I received a free copy of this book.
The Narration: Michael Gilliland continues to be a great pick for this series. I really, really enjoyed his Grizzly pirate voices in this book. He also does a great job with the few female voices, especially Mia.

This time Shivers must set sail again to get his beloved ship, the Land Lady, back from Mayor Sheila B. President. Shivers won't be going alone, however. He'll be bringing his best pal, Margo, and his loyal fishmate, Albee, on a clingy-clam and hot dog-filled adventure. Silly fun for kids and parents alike
Would you listen to Shivers! again? Why?
I could listen to Shivers! over and over again. I'm sure each time I listen, I'd catch a new joke or play on words. It's hilarious!
What did you like best about this story?
Shivers and Margo always go on the best adventures--super silly but of the utmost importance. It's a joy to read about their antics.
What does Connor White bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
It's always nice to listen to a book that's narrated by its author, because they know more about the characters than anyone else. Connor White really takes this to another level. His impressive range of voices painted such a clear picture of each of the dozens of characters in the book. And some of them are pretty kooky! It was truly a joy to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed and laughed and laughed.

Now you see them, now you don't....
What would you do if you could become invisible? Creep around unseen? Listen in on other people's conversations?
Twins Carrie and Conrad, and their friends Peter and Charlotte, do all these things and much more when a new girl at school - Rosie - shows them her secret: how to make themselves invisible. It's exciting, and it's fun. It can also be frightening...and dangerous. Especially when Rosie's dad becomes a suspect in a local crime and the gang go invisible to find the real crooks....
    Members Reviews:
Not a bad book at all
This will be the third review at this point and I'm going to rate Invisible! much higher than the 1 star the 8/24/07 reviewer gave. The book is obviously written for children around the age of the characters- 10, so of course older readers may not like that (took me some time too).
That 1star complained about everything but I found the plot to be reasonable (remember- it's for a 10 yr old), and the writing not bad either (written and set in Britain some words/terms will be foreign to most Americans but it's not that hard to figure out most of it).
The new girl in town, Rosie, and her new friends solve the crime by investigation of clues, and some luck ( the adults don't listen to them, prejudiced against the strange new family, and kids are silly anyway).
Nudity does have a role in the story (Rosie tells the others "you'll soon get used to it" and that they'll eventually give it up) but is never really described (one boy "doesn't know where to look", one girl spends a day nude at school and regrets it because a celebrity comes to visit and she can't meet him) but no body parts are ever described and nothing ever "happens" between the kids. There really isn't that much of it, or any real explanation of how invisibility works, so if you can ignore just a bare mention and figure out those British terms- your 10-13 year old should like this story (I'm not familiar with much of # 1's "better books" list but suspect that most kids- and some adults, will like Invisible! better). I don't regret buying it.
If This Book Turned Invisible Before You Read it, That Would Not Be a Bad Thing! Much Better Invisibility Books Out There!
What would you do if you became invisible? This is the question on the back of the cover and you've probably got hundreds of ideas of what you and your friends would do. The characters or in real life the imagination of author Robert Swindells though couldn't really come up with much. This book seems to be more about lecturing the readers on social issues such as gypsies aren't thieves, school bullies have issues at home that make them bully others and other important through the eyes of Robert Swindell life lessons.
The kids don't really get up to anything other than sneaking into two houses (the victim and the thief). Swindells couldn't even think up a decent idea for how his characters become invisible so just says its a secret passed down through the travellers (gypsies) generations that all kids up to around 13 can do it by walking heal to toe backwards around a perfect circle. Now obviously in real life there is no realistic way to turn invisible but you want whichever way is used to be in the imagination of the reader maybe possible.
The plot for this novel is very thin.
