Brilliant story AWFUL narration

I've read this book many times - it's a fantastic story, brilliant. Unfortunately this is a perfect example of how a terrible narrator can ruin a brilliant piece of work. Rosemary is read like a squeaky child. I had to listen to it on X1.25 speed to make it bearable.

Insidious classic

Would you consider the audio edition of Rosemary's Baby to be better than the print version?

Yeah, I'm a man so I appreciated having a female narrater, it brought Rosemary alive for me.

What did you like best about this story?

I think it was a classic horror story, I can appreciate how original it must have been when it was first published.

Have you listened to any of Katherine Fentons other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't but she did a very good job.i did feel that Rosemary was a bit whiny at first but she grew on me.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Some children are little devils (terrible I know, sorry)

It felt like the film Annabelle took a lot of inspiration from this book. At time some of the racial references are dated and offensive.

Enjoyed it, but not scary.

Not scary as I was led to believe, it was predictable and pretty silly! But the recording was good, I didn't find Rosemary's voice annoying unlike other listeners.

the performance was a little squeaky voiced at times but I got used to it.

Wonderful Wonderful Book

Omg Where and How does one begin tell how much this book will impact a reader? It's one of those that rips your heart and stomps on it but yet you gotta tell others they must read this book Pennies from Burger Heaven. This book has gave me a whole new outlook on Poor City areas and the Homeless. Copper grabs and plucks your heartstrings as does her colorful friends you meet along the way. Although the book does end bittersweet it is well worth one's time to read this poignant book for it will forever stay in a readers heart and mind. I really am at a loss of words to describe how this book touched my heart in a most profound way

I ordered this by mistake. I intended to order the book. By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late to get a refund. I thought it was very superficial, but if you're looking for a simple summary, this might be for you.

It crawls through the back of your neck

Four long novellas for the price of one book, what more could you ask for. Most writers would have padded the stories a little bit and sold them separately, but not Stephen King, his output is amazing and the stories are solid King territory, America at its best and worst, drunks and monsters, children and the terror of growing up with dark secrets and abuse ( a recurring theme in all of his books) these themes get put aside for in favor of emphasising the gore when discussing his work.

I have been re-reading his books and doing so I find patterns and repetitions that point to a man that is concerned with children's suffering and what changes them, alcohol is a big character in most stories a presence that changes lives a hiding place were horror gathers all its toys.

The Library policeman is the best story for my taste and the most disturbing. Sun Dog is surrealistic and the best father-son he has written. Langoliers is a very different time travel story. Secret Window Secret Garden, is a breakup story like no other. Take your pick, I take them all.

Stephen King goes to the twilight zone.

As a fan of the original Twilight Zone and as a Constant Reader I loved what in my mind was four episodes of the one created by the other.

One Past Midnight, "The Langoliers" The characters awake on a airplane to find that everyone else has disappeared. This soft science fiction novella focuses mostly on characters rather than science fact. This story has the least amount of tension due to the crowdedness of the characters. It does have its moments though. The characters are all interesting, I did care about them and I thought they complemented the concept to make a good listen. Willem Defoe's narration was excellent. He does a descent English accent (as an Englishman I appreciate that) and I liked the background sounds as well.

Two past midnight, "Secret Window, Secret garden" centres around a theme of confrontation. John Shooter thinks Mort Rainey owes him a story, Mort disagrees, physiological warfare ensues. From the off its clear which direction this novella is heading, King doesn't disappoint. This was the story I wanted The Dark Half to be plus James Woods narration was fantastic, again I liked the back ground sound editing. As an audiobook fanatic its nice to hear creativity outside of the narrator. Seriously though, James Woods sounded like he enjoyed reading it.

A MUST READ for anyone who enjoys a good laugh or for someone who needs to be reminded about the joy in a good relationship

Helen Deines' laugh-out-loud account of her coming to terms with the death of her beloved husband provided one of the best âreadsâ Iâve had in a long time. Deines intermingles the bizarre occurrences in her daily job as an elder counselor with the confusion and joy she experienced during her improbable, but believable, encounters with her now deceased husband. Through it all, readers sense the love and trust that she always experienced in his presence.

In her remarkably light-hearted account of a difficult situation, Deines offers valuable insights on the role of love, trust and humor when facing various struggles in life while also prompting her readers to appreciate the good we have right now in our lives.

Charming

The story just hit home. I lost my husband of almost 40 years just 2 months ago, just before the holidays. I've already had a series of firsts, the least of which is hearing him talk to me. Haven't seen him yet but that wouldn't surprise me given our love for each other. This book jumped out of my Kindle carousel begging to be read, and I'm so glad I did! Helped ease my grief a bit and realize it's OK to keep talking to him...I know he hears me.

Not what I expected

I believe in different realms and even though this was fiction, was a good love story. Looking forward to the next book, to see how plays out.

Amazing

Islam is no doubt an extremely skilled writer. This is not a book for the small minded as Islam paints a big picture of the world within a Brooklyn that used to be and a journey to a homeland that the characters once knew. This is a book of self discovery, a coming of age story turned on its head, through multiple outlets and identities, she provides a developed voice for her characters. I am looking forward to see what else she brings into the world of words.

Reading Bright Lines was a beautiful experience and I found myself immersed in the lives of the characters, all showing different facets of humanity and complex relationships we have with ourselves and each other. The descriptive style of the author puts you in the thick of the scene, making it tangible. Wonderful Summer Read!

Bright Lines is such a vivid portrayal of the coming of age story. It perfectly depicts the inner turmoil and the revelations a person must take in order to become who they really are inside. All her characters are written so realistic, but my favorite character was Ella/El herself. I loved the way Tanwi's pictorial of her coming to himself is magically portrayed, and the combination of the reader being able to be transported into the beautifully described hallucinations.

a thought-provoking, coming of age story

I read this for a book club, and honestly I may have given up on it early on if I hadn't had the incentive to finish for the discussion.... But so glad I did continue reading. The writing style I found a bit challenging, you often wonder where this story is going. But by the end it really gives you so much to think about and really gives you such a unique perspective on cultural competency and looking at life from someone else's point of view.

Just a great read!

Oh it was so great to be back in the world of Mike Gayle's writing again. I don't know why it took me so long to pick up another of his novels, this one has been sitting on my TBR for so long and I just loved every moment of it! Mike Gayle writes a fabulous male lead, of course, and his books are always so character driven, it is hard not to be swept along by them. I listened to this one as an audiobook and the person that narrates the Mike Gayle audiobooks that I have listened to always does a great job.

This is basically the story of a father having to cope with the loss of his wife at the same time as having to cope with being a full time dad again. There is also a parallel storyline involving his mother in law Linda and her own journey of self-discovery. I loved the relationship that that two characters have and that they do have such a strong relationship still after their respective wife and daughter leave their lives. Of course there are some really emotional moments in this book, when you are dealing with grief, what do you expect. I loved reading about Tom's relationship with his children though and his struggle to try and live up to his wife's way of doing things sometimes leads to some really funny moments as well!

I liked Tom as a c character, he is not without his flaws and so was easy to relate to from the word go. He grows as a person as well as as a father over the course of the novel and this was great to watch. As I mentioned above, Linda also plays a key role in the novel. The way it is structured is that there is a Tom chapter followed by a Linda chapter, and it generally follows that form over the whole novel. She too has a journey of self-discovery and this really opens up the audience of the book. We have lead characters, one male and one who is older, something which Mike Gayle does incredibly well.

Of course there is a little romance thrown into this book as well as new friendships. I loved reading about these relationships, there were some real aww moments for me, and not just when Tom has a in with his daughters. There is so much to love about this book and if you are new to this author, this would be a great starting place. I think this is definitely something fans of this genre should be adding to their TBRs, but also something for those of you who prefer an older protagonist, or a male lead. A great read!

Lovely, well written, absorbing book!

Mike Gayle is such a clever writer. He manages to write about non-toxic relationships without his books becoming tedious chick lit. I did fear part way through this one that it could end up that way, but as always he pulled it back.
