The heartfelt and hilarious international best-selling debut about having it all without losing your mind.
Sophie Whelan is the kind of woman who prides herself on doing it all. In a single day, she can host a vegan-friendly and lactose-free dinner for 10, thwart a PTA president intent on forcing her to volunteer, and outwit her hostile 'assistant' in order to get her work done on time.

    A no brainer A+++.
I don't really know what I expected when I started reading this story. I had read the reviews, of course, but I was literally blown away by how really fantastic this story is. It's so far above the usual love story that it's not even in the same league!! It's not only that Sophie is a grown woman of 39 (although a good deal of the book takes place when she is 22 and the time switches are blended beautifully which is extremely difficult to pull off successfully), it's that there was not a single thing that I had in common with anyone, yet I was still touched deeply on an emotional level because every single character, no matter how minor, came alive as long as I was reading the story!!! I felt like if there really was such a hospital in that city and I were to go there, I would walk down the hallway and if I passed someone described in the book, I'd not only recognize their features, I'd know all about their personalities, as well.
Reading this book was a rare treat; a truly unexpected pleasure. I read love stories specifically for light reading, sort of to rest my brain in between the often grim reading I normally deal with but to read a love story like The Hole in the Middle was like finding buried treasure!!!
I don't think you have to be a working mother to appreciate this story, but I doubt whether someone under 35 or so would be able to identify with Sophie but I could be all wrong. As I said, NOTHING in my life had any correlation to the story (I'm over 60 and I had to stop working when my children were small because of my severe MS) and I still loved and identified with Sophie.
So, if you want to read an exceptionally good love story that I give my highest recommendation to, I strongly suggest that you buy and read this one ASAP!!!
The story itself was woven around her main character in such a way that you felt like you were were a part of Sophie's life
From the first paragraph, Kate Hilton's "The Hole in the Middle" drew me in. The story itself was woven around her main character in such a way that you felt like you were were a part of Sophie's life. Hilton's story rings true for so many families who are juggling children, work, extended families, friends and working full-time jobs. For those who have walked in the main character's shoes, you know the frustrations of hoping a sick child can make it through the day because your work schedule is so hectic.

    Heartbreaking.
This book just about put me through the ringer!! My heart broke for Brian and I was raging with his mother. So many emotions ran through me when I was reading this!!
This is about Brian, he is abused by his step father, his mother turns a blind eye to whats happening and he is being bullied at school. His life is one let down after another, but what happens when all the rage builds up? What happens when enough is enough and a person explodes?
This book was so hard to finish, not because it's not good, it is, but because it wrecked me emotionally. What happens to Brian was that hardest thing I've ever had to read. He is raped, beaten and abused by his step father and then has to face been beaten again by bullies at school. It was heartbreaking to read and deeply disturbing.
I knew going into it it was going to be tough, but I have to say, there were quite a few things that made the story horrible. Apart from the rape etc, it was the fact that Brian's mother seemed to not care!! It felt unrealistic, but then again, I've never experienced anything like this so don't know if the way she acted could be true or not!! Despite her son constantly having bruises etc, she believed everything her husband said about Brian. And then there was a part where she witnessed something but just turned around and did nothing!! I hated her!!!
Anyway, this book is not for the faint of heart, it's not for people with any kind of triggers because it's brutal, it doesn't hold back and it is disturbing. I still find myself thinking about this weeks after reading it, and yes, it took me weeks to be able to sit down and write this!!
Rick Gregory did a great job with this. He showed emotion and was able to capture the mood of the book perfectly. He is a fairly new narrator and while it shows in certain parts, you just know that with experience, he will get better. He is easy to listen to and has a clear voice. I will have to check out more from him!!
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
    Oh. My. God.
This book, and specifically the protagonist Brian Boozer, slunk their way into my heart and have remained there, stuck in the place of heartbroken injustice. Some parts of this story were incredibly difficult to listen to. The opening scene to this book has haunted my nightmares AND the corners of my wakeful mind. It's the most disturbing instance of child abuse I've ever heard described; I don't think I've ever felt more terror or pity for a fictional character before.

You won't be able to.put it down
I couldn't put the book down! I had to get to the ending!!!! Great book, great story!! I loved it!
    Must read
What a fantastic well written book. Very inspiring!
    Beautiful!
I loved this book. It made me smile, laugh and cry. You can't get better than that in anything! It's the story of a dying man, Tom, deciding not to die in a hospital bed. So he pulls out his IV and leaves. This is the story of how he decided his last days would be. I wasn't expecting it to be so uplifting. But it was.
    Heartwarming with flaws
The main character and I are about the same age and share a love of running as well as a first name. Fortunately my health is much better than his and my wife is still very much alive.
The concept of the book was fantastic. What better way to go than to put on your favorite running clothes, lace up the running shoes, and hit the road for one last run? The story is as heartwarming as can be, and I laughed and cried my way through the book. That said, some of the exertions seemed a little much for a man in his condition, and the editing is really bad. Still, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others.
    He did it his way.
Tom is near the end of his life, but there are a few loose ends to tie up. With courage, spunk, and humor he begins his last run. Family, including pets and his doctor join in the journey with unexpected stops along the way. He trudged on with purpose in his mind, as his failing health threatens his ability to finish his marathon, he will not give in or give up. A heartwarming story of love, and forgiveness, truly one of the best reads in a long time!!

    Publisher's Summary:
Why is tonight different from all other nights?
    Tonight we kill dad.
In 2022 American Jews face an increasingly unsafe and anti-Semitic landscape at home. Against this backdrop, the Jacobson family gathers for Passover in Los Angeles. But their immediate problems are more personal than political, with the three adult children, Mo, Edith, and Jacob, in various states of crisis, the result, each claims, of a lifetime of mistreatment by their father, Julian. The siblings have begun to suspect that Julian is hastening their mother Roz's demise, and years of resentment boil over as they debate whether to go through with the real reason for their reunion: an ill-considered plot to end their father's iron rule for good. That is, if they can put their bickering, grudges, festering relationships, and distrust of one another aside long enough to act.
And God help them if their mother finds out....
Tell Me How This Ends Well presents a blistering and prescient vision of the near future, turning the exploits of one very funny, very troubled family into a rare and compelling exploration of the state of America and what it could become.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tell Me How This Ends Well is a wickedly funny, intelligent examination of the dynamics of a uniquely strange family, and David Levinson guides these characters through a plot that intensifies in such unexpected ways. Against a backdrop that feels both terrifying and yet utterly plausible, Levinson again and again finds ways to make the struggles of this clan explode with a kind of humor that most writers could not dream of pulling off. A daring, memorable novel." (Kevin Wilson, author of Perfect Little World)
    "Imaginative, intelligent." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    An Uncomfortably Plausible Satire
What changes will the year 2022 bring? A mere five years in the future, but still, one can look forward to at least a modicum of progress, right? An inching toward that ever-present goal of harmony and justice? Unfortunately not so in the fictional world David Samuel Levinson presents us with in his new, acerbic satire Tell Me How This Ends Well. In it, we explore the dangerously anti-Semitic Los Angeles through the eyes of a dysfunctional Jewish family.
Â Â ÂThe novel is divided into three major sections, each focusing on the daily thoughts and actions of one of the adult Jacobson children. Through these in-depth third-person-limited perspectives, we get a vivid picture of the family dynamic, focusing on the verbal and psychological abuse suffered by them all courtesy of the family patriarch, their father Julian. A narcissistic, controlling, close-minded individual, Julian appears to have incited much resentment within his children, who have come to suspect that he is mistreating their ailing mother. Amidst the chaos of suicide bombers- a not uncommon occurrence in the current climate- and hateful slurs from strangers, the siblings reconvene in Los Angeles with a tentative plan to murder their father.
Â Â ÂI cannot lie. This was a tough work to get through. Not because of the biting satire, which I actually quite appreciated, but because of my ambivalence toward the majority of the characters. Most are deeply flawed and not so much in an anti-hero/anti-heroine way, as much as in an unrelatable way.

    Boring and really disappointing
What was most disappointing about Cathy Kellys story?
The story and I think the narrator
How could the performance have been better?
    Better story
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I totally agree with the previous reviewer. The book was really tedious and disappointing. I usually love her books and was excited when I saw she had a new one out. I have only read two hours and can't continue with it. It was awful and to be honest I couldn't make head nor tail of what was going on at times. I thought it was perhaps the monotonous voice of the reader that made me dislike it so much but the storyline was so dull I've had to give up. What a shame. Let's hope this is just a one off and she's back to her best with the next one.
    Disappointing
I usually enjoy Cathy Kelly's books but this one is tedious and boring. Not recommended.
    couldn't listen to it
found this extremely boring didn't get past third chapter. I'll wait for next credit disappointed
    great book
brilliant book, defo worth a listen, kept you gripped to see what happened next. brilliant
    Brilliant.
Just brilliant. I was unsure because of some of the less positive reviews about it being boring & having too many characters but I loved it, enjoyed the story & didn't find it difficult to follow at all.
