As a tremendous amount of societal pressure is put on perfect plans and extreme success, how can we protect ourselves from that by having our own, solid understanding of success? How can we prepare ourselves for the best possible opportunities that could pop up along our journey?
Your definition of success needs to be your very own, and hard work today is what will open the best doors of possibility tomorrow. That way, when life happens and plans change, we aren't stuck with living our "second best" life. We get to embrace the opportunity of change, because we are prepared!

Emotional leadership is an approach to leading that will put you head and shoulders above others in no time. That doesn't mean it is easy to cultivate, but it definitely helps to understand the building blocks that make it so unique.

Basically everyone you come in contact with — doesn’t matter when or where or if you’re interacting with the most confident person that you know — everyone has a sign on their head that says “make me feel important, try to understand me, I want to be heard, seen, valued."
Or, as my husband likes to think about all this, everyone wants you to put a 10 on their forehead!
and this approach to interacting is, in a nutshell, what emotional leadership is all about, but there’s also much much more to it than that!
The four parts of emotional leadership are:

Shannon Huffman Polson, a consultant, former military pilot, author, and speaker pulls from a wealth of personal testimony to train and educate on the topic of developing grit. She was in the first group of women to fly the Apache attack helicopter in the US army, an experience that gives her a unique perspective on topics such as leading authentically to who you are, rising above resistance, and staying connected with your core purpose. Shannon’s newest book, “The Grit Factor: Courage, Resilience, and Leadership in the Most Male-Dominated Organization in the World” walks readers through applicable and transformative exercises that solidify many of these hard lessons.

Sharing stories paves the way for empathy, but only if we share our stories with the heart of an others-focused leader.
Step 1. Ask yourself: Who am I sharing this story for? Am I sharing it to make myself look good or to benefit someone else? When we get into groups of friends and start exchanging those "remember when?" stories, it's easy to want to share a story for ourselves. As a leader, you should want to try and do the opposite: Share for the other person, and be okay if you don't even get to finish your entire story, because it turned into a back and forth dialogue instead!
Step 2. Share with humility. Share a story to benefit the other person even if it doesn't always show you in the most favorable light. Your vulnerability will open the door for them to grow and take away more impactful insights from your conversation.
Step 3. Share while listening to the other person. Observe his or her body language and other non-verbal cue that can let you know if what you are saying is resonating and helpful.
Next time you find yourself in a group conversation --- whether catching up with friends or meeting with coworkers --- asking yourself this simple question will help your stories resonate in a much more meaningful way!

In this episode, we start with a brief definition of a strong mindset and discuss why it is so important for us as leaders to develop one. We progress into four different types of mindsets. Each of these four types of mindsets is on a spectrum, so you will get to see whether you fall more to one side, the other side, or if you are in the middle.
These spectrums are based on research by authors Ryan Gottfredson and Chris Reina which can be read here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.leaqua.2019.101373

We continue to lay the groundwork for a successful journey towards improving ourselves as leaders of others. But, before we can lead others, we must lead ourselves, and the very first step in leading ourselves is simply knowing who we are.
