When I was growing up, Fridays were this amazing day that opened up the weekend’s doors for us. As I got older it became even more awesome… until I got a job where I worked weekends. Gladly, I don’t have to do that anymore so I give you podcasts on Fridays to keep with the spirit of celebrating weekend entry!

I love how the world is taking notice of Africa’s wealth of talent (finally)! We still have ways to go but I can see that the shift has begun. One demographic to thank is Africans in the diaspora. They have yearned for a connection to home while introducing African music to non-Africans.

The direction African popular music is taking right now is pretty impressive. We’ve addressed a lot of issues that were keeping us from realising our potential. I was thinking, how much did that Drake co-sign do for African music? One Dance was the biggest song in the world in 2016 and it featured Africa and Nigeria’s own Wizkid and co-produced by DJ Maphorisa from South Africa. Although we were already doing well, that opened up our music to the world’s ears. It could be put on the same platform as what Gangnam Style did for K-Pop and what Despacito did for Latin pop and Reggaeton.
