MountainLore

It’s Thanksgiving and Gena and I are away from the MountainLore podcast studios for the holidays, so this week we go into the vault to bring you an encore of the story of the Brown Mountain Lights.

They say that on a crisp, clear fall evening, if you happen to be in the right place, you can see glowing orbs of light bobbing up and down on Brown Mountain in western North Carolina. There are several stories told to explain those strange lights, and we tell them to you on this week’s episode of the MountainLore podcast.

In 1934 stories began to circulate in the Brushy Valley section of East Tennessee, near Knoxville, of a large black dog that was taking livestock, often right in front of the farmers to whom they belonged.  This dog was different from other predators, it was said, because it was apparently unfazed by any bullets fired at it and thus was protected by magic.  Today we tell the tale of the Brushy Valley Witch Dog. Sally Slate was a witch, who lived in an odd, old house.  Most folks avoided her, but one night she found someone on whom to cast a spell, which allowed her to take a wild midnight ride with the unwilling "horse."
