In 1934 stories began to circulate in the Brushy Valley section of East Tennessee, near Knoxville, of a large black dog that was taking livestock, often right in front of the farmers to whom they belonged.  This dog was different from other predators, it was said, because it was apparently unfazed by any bullets fired at it and thus was protected by magic.  Today we tell the tale of the Brushy Valley Witch Dog. At the turn of the 20th century the coal industry in Appalachia was experiencing such a boom that operators had to bring in workers from eastern and southern Europe to work in the mines.  One of these workers was a Russian man his fellow workers dubbed "Big John."  And Big John had quite an impact on those other miners, in life and in death.  Today we tell his tale.
