Fresh sweet berries are nature’s candy, or so we like to think. But there’s nothing natural about the inhumane treatment experienced by the farmworkers responsible for bringing those berries to your table.
Join us for a conversation with farmworker and union activist with Familias Unidas por la Justicia Alfredo “Lelo” Juárez, and community organizer with Community to Community Development and Move to Amend board member Edgar Franks on the fight to expand democracy and procure human rights for migrant farmworkers, as we bring into focus farmworkers' union, Familias Unidas por la Justicia, and the ongoing boycott of berry products from corporate agribusiness, Sakuma Brothers Farms and Driscoll's.

From the beginning, the US Constitution has been very exclusive in who and what it protects, focusing on property rights while excluding basic human rights for most Americans. Citizens United represents just one in a very long string of Supreme Court decisions, past and since, which have rewritten our Constitution to give constitutional rights to corporations and other artificial entities, effectively preventing many of us -- particularly women, people of color, and indigenous communities -- from attaining the real promise of democracy.
Join us for a conversation with DeNora Getachew about the efforts of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program to reform campaign finance and elections to guarantee voting rights for all people.
DeNora Getachew serves as Campaign Manager and Legislative Counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, where she manages advocacy initiatives aimed at improving our nation’s democracy and voting system. In particular, she provides strategic leadership for legislative and policy campaigns related to modernizing voter registration processes and reducing the influence of money in politics.  Ms. Getachew began her legal career as Legislative Attorney for the New York City Council’s Governmental Operations Committee, authoring legislation and advancing policy reform to improve the City’s lobbying laws, campaign finance system, and processes for administering elections. Prior to joining the Brennan Center, Ms. Getachew served as Policy Director for then Public Advocate Bill de Blasio working with diverse stakeholders to shape the Office’s policy priorities.

Have you ever tried to ban fracking in your community, or tried to raise the minimum wage, only to find out that your community has no freedom to protect itself or your environment? You're not alone. As corporate power continues to expand under the court-created doctrine of "corporate personhood," so does the harm they cause in communities faced with increasingly reduced power.
We talk with co-founder and director of Movement Rights, Shannon Biggs, about the Rights of Communities and Rights of Nature, and how We the People can assert these rights above the claimed legal “rights” of corporations.

It’s hard to ignore the military-industrial complex in the United States: our government spends more than HALF of the national budget on the military, awards trillions of dollars in military contracts to private corporations, and then receive hundreds of billions in lobbying money to increase that military spending. The connections between corporate oligarchy and the US military are rarely explored within "mainstream" corporate-owned news. In fact, it's more likely for corporate media to defend the American war economy with nationalist propaganda while attacking any critic or anti-war activist who might work against it.
"Made Love, Got War" is how journalist, author, media critic, and activist Norman Solomon describes the military-industrial complex in his book by the same name. Solomon’s lifetime in journalism and anti-war activism have combined to provide his readers with accurate and responsible reporting and analysis. Don’t miss the conclusion of our enlightening two-part conversation about the future of democracy and the fates of whistleblowers and anti-war advocates with one of the country’s foremost independent journalists and experienced activists.
