  • MD Podcast: Nutrition and Parkinson Disease
Welcome. My name is Danish Bhatti. I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at University of Nebraska Medical Center, and I have the pleasure of having Professor John Bertoni MD PHD, the Director for Parkinson’s Disease Program, with us today to discuss an important topic about nutrition and Parkinson’s disease. John Bertoni: Well, yes, we are co directors of the Parkinson’s Disease Clinic now. So it’s a pleasure working with you. And as you know, we’re into some important research about nutrition and Parkinson’s disease. Danish Bhatti: That’s right. So I have trained with you as a movement disorder fellow and I’ve been working with you for the last five years and I know that you’ve always paid attention to nutritional status and vitamins of your patient with Parkinson’s disease. And I’ve seen your patients do very well with their Parkinson’s disease for 20-30 years and still walking to clinic and coming regularly. And I’ve always tried to figure out what are those things that I can replicate and have my patients have similar outcome. So, you know, I am now working with you and we’re working together on this nutritional study of Parkinson’s disease. What would […]

  • Coffee with John: On Focusing, and Priorities
Danish Bhatti: All right. Let’s try again. John Bertoni: You’re going to use your other system. Danish Bhatti: Yeah John Bertoni: I find like yesterday when I wanted to say a few things in the middle of the night. I had an epiphany. That means all of a sudden something becomes clear. So in the middle of the night you might say what a great idea. You just had in the morning you listen. You can’t make any sense of it. It’s like I just had this fantastic dream. Try to write it down and the next morning you’re looking at scribble that looks like a Parkinson’s you know really. Danish Bhatti: You can read it or if you read it, it does not make sense like the idea don’t make sense. John Bertoni: Either way. You can’t read it or if you can read it. you say “What?” you know because you’re half asleep you may not be out of sleep. So. You were just saying that you’re trying to slow down but you’re speeding up. Danish Bhatti: I think what I mean is that I’m slowing down in the sense of I’m becoming more focused on what I […]

  • MD Podcast: Patient Stories -CPR Instructor -value of observation in medicine
Danish Bhatti: Welcome John. It is another episode of Movement Disorder podcast where you share the stories that the patients have taught you, with us. What story would you like to share with our listeners today. John Bertoni: Well I think we can call this one Paying Attention to Details. Danish Bhatti: Paying attention to details. That’s interesting. So tell us the background of this story. Where were you when this episode happened, in what setting and what was going on around that time. John Bertoni: Every so often, we have to renew our skills in CPR and there’s basic CPR and now we call life support. So it was my turn. I was at the V.A. (veterans administration hospital) I figured it’d be easy at the V.A. because is not a big line over there. Danish Bhatti: So V.A. is a Veterans Administration hospital. John Bertoni: Right. Danish Bhatti: And the CPR will be the Cardiopulmonary resuscitation of basic life support. John Bertoni: Yes. Danish Bhatti: And where were you in your career? John Bertoni: This was so 5 years ago maybe a little longer. Danish Bhatti: When you were full professor and chair of Department. John Bertoni: This […]

  • Coffee with John: On Modern Education and Challenging Norms
Danish Bhatti: So I think we started doing this coffee to chat about things. I don’t know. I don’t even know why but we started doing it in a flick and we were talking about. I think we realized that there are many topics that interest us both which are way beyond medicine topics about success how to solve the problems of life why people make mistakes why people make choices that do philosophy, mythology, psychology history. John Bertoni: Right. Danish Bhatti: We have read similar greek authors and things like. John Bertoni: That the epic of Gilgamesh together. Yeah. Danish Bhatti: So that was the primary purpose that we were talking about ideas that were dear to us that we felt important. And I felt I was learning a lot and I hope you felt you were teaching me a lot. It was like a mentoring relationship outside of medicine about life in general not just Movement Disorder. John Bertoni: No, I enjoy these very much not just enjoy them but I find them very valuable. I learn a lot if only to clarify my own thinking. But you actually are wise beyond years and you understand a great […]
