Movies First: Film Reviews & Insights

**Synopsis:** Dive deep into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the genius behind the atomic bomb, in Christopher Nolan's latest film, "Oppenheimer". This episode of Movies First with Alex First explores the intricacies of the movie, its characters, and the historical implications of Oppenheimer's work. **Key Points:** 1. **Film Overview:** "Oppenheimer" is a tension-filled portrayal of the man who changed the world with the creation of the atomic bomb. Directed by the master filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, the film delves into the events leading up to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their aftermath. 2. **Character Deep Dive:** Silly and Murphy's portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer is both insightful and remarkable. The film showcases Oppenheimer's intellectual journey, his personal struggles, and his eventual concerns over the atomic bomb's potential misuse. 3. **Supporting Cast:** Stellar performances by Matt Damon, Robert Downey, Jr., Ebily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Kenneth Brenner, and Rami Malik add depth and layers to this cinematic masterpiece. 4. **Behind the Scenes:** The film's evocative cinematography, alternating between color and black and white, coupled with Ludwig-Goronson's arresting score, makes for an immersive viewing experience. 5. **Accolades:** Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "American Prometheus", "Oppenheimer" is touted as the film of the year with a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Oscars are surely on the horizon. 6. **Closing Thoughts:** Making theoretical physics engaging for a general audience is a challenge, but Nolan achieves this with commendable attention to detail. Every scene is a piece of a political and deeply personal puzzle. **Outro:** Tune into Movies First with Alex First on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, or your preferred podcast player. In this "Movies First" podcast episode, Alex First reviews "Barbie the movie" starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Set in Barbie land, a world dominated by Barbies and Ken dolls, the film showcases a platonic relationship between the main characters, Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling). However, Robbie's Barbie starts malfunctioning, leading her on a journey to the real world to find the cause. The movie has its moments of humor and charm, but Alex feels it could have been better, especially with the writing talents of Greta Gourwig and Noah Bombach. Despite its shortcomings, performances by Margot Robbie, Kate McKinnon, and others are commendable. The film pays homage to Barbie's creator, Ruth Handler, and incorporates a mix of toy-like action with real-life scenarios. Alex gives the movie a rating of 6.5 out of 10. **Show Notes:** - **Podcast:** Movies First with Alex First - **Episode:** Review of "Barbie the movie" - **Starring:** Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling - **Plot:** Set in Barbie land, Robbie's Barbie starts malfunctioning and embarks on a journey to the real world, accompanied by Ken. - **Highlights:** - Strong performances by Margot Robbie and Kate McKinnon. - Tribute to Barbie's creator, Ruth Handler. - Blend of toy-like action with real-life scenarios. - Notable scenes: Barbie eating without food, Ken's surfing wipeout. - **Critiques:** - Wanted more depth and cleverness in the script. - Some parts felt like an advertisement for Mattel. - Plotting could have been stronger. - **Rating:** 6.5 out of 10.

Answering the big question...should I see this movie? Women Talking (Drama) Even though this is a work of fiction, termed an act of female imagination, the starting point for women talking is what happened in the recent past. I refer to events that took place on the Manitoba Colony, a remote and isolated Christian community known as Mennonites in Bolivia. Between 2005 and 2009, more than 100 girls and women in the colony awoke to discover they'd been raped in their sleep. Episode 1010 Answering the big question...should I see this movie? Babylon (Comedy, Drama, History) Sodom and Gomorrah might be a more appropriate title for a film all about excess and depravity. Babylon charts Hollywood's golden age and the transition from the silent era to talkies. It does so primarily through the eyes of a bona fide star, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks intent on making it, a lowly errand boy who gets an unexpected break, a shameless and talented lesbian and an African-American jazz trumpeter.
