  • MMeets—RMIT Interior Design presents ‘Interiorizt Experiments'—Part two • 13 October 2017
    PART TWO
“‘?interior’ is a question posed in a continually changing and dynamic outside and as such invites the potential for the new. This is one reason why there is a z rather than an s in this interiorizt and interiorization. The use of z in words can be described as “an active s”; shaped like a lightning strike, a z brings energy and movement to a word, its reading and meaning. While interiorizt practice includes interiorists it cannot become equated with interiorism as the z is like a bolt of the blue.”
    — ‘interiorizt’ by Suzie Attiwill in The Handbook of Interior Architecture and Design (2013), p116.
RMIT Interior Design brings to MPavilion an exhibition and presentation of experiments by interiorizts from IN—an RMIT undergraduate interior design specialisation. A laboratory for experimentation, IN invites students to inhabit the persona of an interiorizt and experiment with techniques of interiorization in the production of outside-interiors, interiority, and experience. MPavilion will become a theatre for exhibiting, viewing, philosophizing, discussing and learning as the interiorizts present their final experiments situated within a broader discussion about interior design, urbanity, nature and landscape.
Come to MPavilion to meet the following interiorizts and their provocations: Suzie Attiwill, Aisha Aziz, Agnes Bartha, Joshua Barron, Beatriz Chamsay, Madaline Ganton, Liz Ginter, Lauren Gostin, Isabella Head-Gray, Nazreen Hendricks, Emilie Holen Askildt, Milena Krstic, Erin Liacos, Jacqueline Miller, Kayla Pannuzzo, Shehani Perera, Amaara Raheem, Hannah Rawlings, Eleanor Rieniets, Zachary Sama, Maddison Savvidis, Silje Kristin Walmann and Keira Wu.
MPavilion acknowledges the participation of the Bachelor of Interior Design (Hons) program, RMIT University.

  • MTalks—Can design promote social cohesion in an expanding city? • 12 October 2017
Join us for an MTalks with NH Architecture as they bring us a special MPavilion version of their popular SERMO series. Sermo is Latin for ‘the word’ and NH architecture’s SERMO discussions are hosted in Melbourne every few months. The events are founded upon NH’s core principles of collaboration and open debate, and each one explores topics that relate to the architectural profession and the design industry. Encouraged by the Institute of Architects, the series is an informal yet informative opportunity for passionate and informed discussion.
For this MTalks, James Tutton (Neometro), Alison Whitten (Resilient Melbourne), David Ritter (Atelier Ten), Jocelyn Chiew (Monash University) and Chris Robinson (Capire) will discuss how the built form of our city strongly influences the type and quality of community connections and interactions, and specifically how rapid-pace, large-scale development can speed by without consultation. The debate will posit that involving people in making decisions about their built and natural environments fosters stronger community identity and cohesion—making places more desirable, liveable and resilient against the forces of a fast-growing city.

  • MTalks—'Contemporary City, Traditional Forms' with Monique Webber • 7 October 2017
OMA / Rem Koolhaas & David Giannoten’s MPavilion 2017 reinvents the ancient amphitheatre for 21st-century Australia. In this dynamic reimagining, MPavilion becomes a platform for exploring interactions in today’s society. The design is conceptual spolia—defined as ‘the reinterpretation of earlier forms and imagery in a new context’—at its contemporary best. But MPavilion 2017 is not the first example of this approach in the city. Melbourne is filled with buildings that refer to the past as a way to respond to the present. Not only is it arranged on a Roman-grid plan, Melbourne’s urban environment transplants classical forms and ideals into a new context. In the process, the traditional visual concepts are abstracted and they gain new meaning. What role does the past have in informing our modern city and the lives we lead within it? How are external and historic ideals made relevant to the contemporary Australian landscape?
This MTalks presented by Monique Webber—State Library of Victoria La Trobe Society Fellowship; and an honorary fellow, principal instructor, and assistant coordinator at The University of Melbourne—will reveal the conceptual spolia of Melbourne’s streets.

  • MTalks—Jack Self: What it means to live today • 5 October 2017
We are living through a period of intense global instability—one that is economic, environmental, social and political. It is an age dominated by precarious relationships and freelance employment, high rents, housing crises and the personal brand. In this context, it has never been more urgent to understand what it means to live today, in order to make a proposal for how we should live tomorrow.
Through several recent projects, London-based architect Jack Self (director, REAL foundation; editor-in-chief, Real Review magazine) will propose a new role for architectural design and thinking in the development of alternative models of ownership, postfunctional space, contemporary and sustainable forms of labour, and the formation of egalitarian socio-economic power relationships in housing.
