For once, I was struck speechless! The audacity! The complete disregard for my own private Idaho. I mean to say, couldn’t the manservant see from the way I was sitting on the cushion, legs so crossedly crossed, pearl necklace so artfully arranged with my eyelids all a flutter inhaling the heady aroma of patchouli and aloofness that I, she with the curse of the gab was soaking in? Couldn’t he hear the sounds of silence? Sounds of silence? Sounds. Of. Silence. wtf? What were those two folkies smoking? That hardly computes!

Zen moment gone and here we are doing a first for radioShirl. A show with no happy talk. That’s correct. Not a lyric to be heard in this episode.

It may be due to the rather gloomy rainy weather we’re experiencing here in the environs of Casa Shirl, but in this show, radioShirl gets down to a few deep and meaningfuls via a few tunes that have, at one time or another, had her dissolve into a puddle of tears. After all this time and repeated listens, some of them still hold a transformative power that has her well up and mop up an absolute torrent of mascara!

Now, I hear you guffaw as you look down the list of artists in this episode, “Burl Ives!?” Yes indeed! The particular Burl Ives track in this show once drove Shirl to tears … though maybe not for the same reason as it may drive yourselves. To each their own and the significance of that song to radioShirl is her little secret. Mind you, the manservant just put it down to me being … “overtired”.

Whether its catharsis, melancholy, a healthy dose of solipsism, a momentary-charged lyric or just a gorgeous string arrangement that sets me off, your favourite sob sister, radioShirl likes nothing more than have a good howl once in a while. Its healthy, right? Just like a Carrot Dacquiri!

As explained last year, this is a tradition here at Chez Shirl but we really have no idea why except to say we love a good accent that curls our toes and nothing tangles my tootsies like mr.K, ma cherie, when he gets all Gomez Adams with me. Ooh la la!

This is quite the trés mix eclectic, as you regular radioShirleyphiles have come to expect. With a lineup including Brigette Fontaine, Grace Jones, Charles Aznavour, France Gall, Eartha Kitt, Les Negresses Vertes, Phonoboy, Nouvelle Vague and far too many more to mention, we hope this show will have you swinging from the chandelier!

We also have a special treat from long time Shirleyphile and authentic Frenchman, Pierre Veinante with his band, Les Mygales détendues (their Facebook page lists their interests as ‘Neurosciences and Rock’) – who perform a fabulous cover version LIVE in the science lab of the ‘Téléphone’ hit, ‪Ça (C’est Vraiment Toi)‬.

This my friends, is what happens when French Neuroscientists get down! Magnifique!

A few weeks ago on a particularly sunny Saturday afternoon, the manservant was chatting on Facebook with long time radioShirleyphile and production designer extraordinaire, the fabulous Ross Wallace. In response to a video Ross posted, they started rapping about those teenage salad days in the 70’s at the roller skating rink … or at the ice rink in the manservant’s case. Unlike Rosscoe who apparently could, “Go backwards and everything!” in high heels even at that tender age, mr.K spent most of the time flat on his backside on the ice, squealing in horror with his hands clasped to his chest as everyone else sped on round and around him like a teenage rampage on blades!

Naturally, both boys being big music fans and both a little bit disco and a little bit rock’n’roll, the chat turned to the music that used to accompany them while they channeled their inner Torville and Deans at said circular pleasure domes! And then, in the spirit of Mickey & Judy’s “Let’s put on a show?!”, crowdsourcing and co-curation, mr.K & Rosscoe put down a wishlist on that Facebook thread of roller disco faves and … wham bam thank you ma’am!, Rosscoe & Shirl’s Glitter Roller Disco was hatched!

Its a veritable cavalcade of 70’s disco and glam fabulousness mr.K and myself with our very special guest presenter, Rosscoe have put together for you this time around! For goodness sakes, this show even features Linda Blair in a classic of the roller skating film genre, ‘Roller Boogie’. If its not a genre, it certainly will be considered as such by the end of this show.

So Shirleyphiles, as Sir Monti Rock III proclaims in the Disco Tex & The Sex-o-Lettes hit, ‘Get Dancin’, “Nobody cares how you wear your hair, darling!” when you hit the play button below and tippy toe tappy your toe stops at Rosscoe & Shirl’s Glitter Roller Disco!
