Rather than lament about the shrinking generation of college-age (and college skeptical) students, a senior writer for the Chronicle, wrote an article about the potential market of older learners. Brilliant, right? But are our campuses honestly ready to serve an adult population? This is a fascinating exploration for student conduct practitioners, who might be quite a bit younger than their potential respondents. Kurt's perspective from a community college lens is particularly poignant if 4-year institutions are looking to move into the adult market.

Everybody has the magic answer. It's the fraternities! It's the alcohol! It's the parents! It's the University! It's the nationals! It's Title IX!

The answer is yes. And there's much more in the broken machinery that keeps our campuses having to revisit this ugly topic year after year. With special co-host Christy Anthony, we look at the issue from a "We're all Cornell" viewpoint to examine how our current systems have evolved and devolved. Colette and Kurt have a lot in common. Something they've never talked about before is how they both lost their mothers when they were fairly young in their careers. Our Ms. Behaviors hosts are both PKs (kids of school principals), and as anniversaries related to their early losses close in, they wonder what lessons they learned about their responsibilities on this earth. With some help from NYT and Atlantic writer David Brooks, Ms. Behavior helps all of us consider what our lasting legacies will be.

There was once a time college professionals wouldn't have imagined that virtual work could also be engaging work. Then came Covid, and higher ed got creative. Then came now. Some staffs use imaginative self-reinvention in response to student needs. Some employers set strict expectations of in-person work. Some employees demonstrate questionable work ethics and some employers demonstrate poor leadership. Texas A&M University at Victoria recently told its faculty to come back to campus full-time, and the professors are quitting. We all see student conduct jobs posted and reposted across the country, and can't help but wonder if there is a similar dynamic in administration.

This week, we explore the complex world of virtual work, and learn there are no easy answers here. Guest co-host Christy Anthony is a model of reinvention and creativity, and she helps us deconstruct the A&M-Victoria case study and challenge current paradigms.

In higher education, we sometimes refer a little too casually to difficult challenges as "crises," but there is a realm of the truly unthinkable. Craig Allen and his staff lived through one of the most well known campus tragedies in the country, and he not only modeled learning, but he put his experience to use by educating others. As Dr. Allen says, being trained is not the same as being prepared, but with his help, we can all be more ready. We can also implement intentional relationship-driven programs to prevent our worst nightmares. Spoiler: You might be surprised at the amount of joy and optimism this episode brings.
