So what I will do is give you thirty Miyamoto Musashi maxims related to living. Spend one day meditating on each maxim and its deeper meaning. What I would suggest is to do it early in the mornings so it carries with you the rest of the day. Perhaps you can listen to this on your way to work or before school. Do not brag over what is not yet done. Be playful, be childlike. Kids think then they do. We need to add some of that back into our lives. Fear of risk stagnates progress. It might feel safe to do nothing, yet most of the world's ills happen because "we should have done something." Happiness is an internal state, but it's driven by external actions. The more meaning we provide others, the happier we feel. So for the sake of others and yourself, have your accomplishments surpass the things you wish you had done.

This is one of the many pieces I wrote several years ago while I was taking care of my mom during hospice.

Much of my philosophy was crystallized during this period.

I wrote this in thinking through my despair. And there is a difference, between depression and despair. Depression is clinical, but despair is philosophical. And I think we often mistake the two—and for many of us, what we suffer from is despair. It may even take our life.

And for me, philosophy saved me from despair. And hopefully—with this piece—I can help others who are also going through despair.
